The Jim Henson (http://www.comingsoon.net/news.php?id=9615#) Company is planning to make a sequel to its 1982 fantasy classic The Dark Crystal, reports Variety.

Titled The Power of the Dark Crystal, the new movie is written by David Odell (The Dark Crystal, The Muppet Show (http://www.comingsoon.net/news.php?id=9615#)) and Annette Duffy. No director is yet attached to the film which starts shooting this fall for a 2007 release. It will combine live-action animatronic characters with CG animation (http://www.comingsoon.net/news.php?id=9615#).

The story is set many years after the original, which was helmed by Frank Oz and Jim Henson. Original heroes Jen and Kira are now king and queen, and must fight to save their kingdom when the crystal is once again split.

The company is also developing an animated series, interactive games (http://www.comingsoon.net/news.php?id=9615#) and other media as well.
Wow! I did not expect this to ever happen. I know for years, those involved in the first one have always spoken about doing a sequel, but to take what will end up being 25 years when this thing is released? Wow. I can't wait for this! Anyone else?

Wow! That's fantastic! And with the Jim Henson Company behind it, it's sure to astound. I mean...their stuff in the Hitchhiker's Guide was beyond fantastic...so it'll be great to see what they pull out for a film like this. :)

Awesome. I've been reading Brian Froud's World of... book and it would rock if they brought him back.

I've only just seen it for the first time in the last 2 years, and it creeped me out :ack: But I'll see the sequal, yes I shall!

Holy crap! This is the best news EVER! I LOVED that movie and had always hoped they would continue the story! Now if they can only convince Jennifer Connely and David Bowie to do a sequel to Labyrinth!;)

I'm picking up The Dark Crystal on DVD now, as soon as possible.:)

If I recall, Neil Gaiman was trying to make a Labyrinth sequel, but it was shot down by the Jim Henson company. Too bad, I would have loved to see his twist on it. Mirrormask looks great, though. I think it's coming either this summer or fall, unless it got pushed back more.

I used to watch THE DARK CRYSTAL all the time way back when I was little, but haven't seen it in probably close to 15 years. I need to pick up the DVD and see it again. I'm curious to see what they do with the sequel.

I wonder how much money they'll lose this time.

I saw Dark Crystal as a kid, and those cannibalistic monsters totally freaked me out.

I remember hearing that he was bascially told "We don't do sequels."

There's no way a Labyrinth sequel could live up to the original though, even with Bowie, Connelly and the Henson crew behind it. It was what it was, a fanciful journey created in the 80s. To try and continue a story which clearly ended using updated technology would be useless.

Dark Crystal, however, was a film I never really took to. I was too dark, too dull and too long when I first saw it. In fact, it never left much of an impression, which is too bad because I know how much hard work Henson put into his films. I'm looking for a reason to appreciate it more, and this sequel may do just that.
