"Ten oughta do it, don't you think? Do you think we need one more? You think we need one more? Alright, we'll get one more." - Danny OceanRelease Date: December 7, 2001
Studio: Warner Bros.
Director: Steven Soderbergh
Starring: George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, Matt Damon, Andy Garcia, Casey Affleck, Alan Arkin, Scott Caan, Don Cheadle, Edward Jemison, Bernie Mac
Plot Summary: Dapper Danny Ocean (Clooney) is a man of action. Less than 24 hours into his parole from a New Jersey penitentiary, the wry, charismatic thief is already rolling out his next plan. Following three rules — don't hurt anybody, don't steal from anyone who doesn't deserve it, and play the game like you've got nothing to lose — Danny orchestrates the most sophisticated, elaborate casino heist in history. In one night, Danny's handpicked 11-man crew of specialists — including an ace card sharp (Pitt), a master pickpocket (Damon) and a demolition genius (Cheadle) — will attempt to steal over $150 million from three Las Vegas casinos owned by Terry Benedict (Garcia), the elegant, ruthless entrepreneur who just happens to be dating Danny's ex-wife Tess (Roberts). Coincidence or motive? Only Danny knows for sure. To score the cash, he'll have to risk his life and his chance of reconciling with Tess. But if it all goes according to Danny's intricate, nearly impossible plan, he won't have to choose between his stake in the heist and his high-stakes reunion with Tess... or will he?

Just got back from seeing this. Fitting that it's set in Vegas, cuz it's just like a Vegas floor show: Glittering surface and no substance, but pretty dang entertaining while you're watching it. Soderbergh knows how to use a camera and there's some good dialogue. But I wish they had invested another 30 minutes to give the story and characters some more heft. When Julia Roberts walks out on Andy Garcia at end (a plot point so predictable it is NOT a spoiler, trust me) it has absolutely no resonance.
Hmm, I see it's projected to take $39 million over the weekend.
There's your headline, DG: 'Ocean' Knocks Over 3 Casinos, Harry Potter ;)

I saw this movie tonight and man was the theater packed. I didnt think it was supposed to do so well. The fact that the only other 2 movies playing were Black Night and Shallow Hal might have had something to do with everyone going to Ocean's 11 though.
I wanted to see this, but I was kind of skeptical, because I tend to believe that movie's with huge starpower are trying to make up for something, but I have to say I thought O11 was a very good movie. It's not the funniest movie and it's not the most suspenseful movie, but it is extremely clever. It had me saying wow more than a couple times. The only thing that I didnt like was Julia Roberts. She didnt reallly do anything for the movie, she had very little camera time, no character development, and like Maxie said, very predictable. But otherwise, I highly recommend this movie.
Does anyone know how similar this one was to the old version?
If I become a criminal, O11 will have been my inspiration. ;)

I can't say for sure. I got home and turned on TCM and by chance caught the last part of the original.
The big changes I picked up on:
* The 11 were all former members of 82nd Airborne.
* They knocked over 5 casinos instead of 3.
* I don't know how they got the money out of the casinos, but they got it out of town past a dragnet by hiding it in a garbage truck.
* There was some sub-plot about a character played by Cesar Romero (a mob enforcer of some kind) preparing to marry the mother of one of the 11.
* The ending was totally different:
The casino owners hired the Cesar Romero character to recover the money. He tracked it down to the 11, and demanded 50% of the take in return for not tipping off the casinos. One of their members had died (unimplicated) in the robbery, so to cheat Romero, Ocean and his pals hid the money in the guy's coffin, expecting it would be shipped to San Francisco. Instead the widow (who knew nothing about the robbery) had the services held in Las Vegas, and had the body cremated. So no one got anything.
I picked up on at least 2 inside jokes in the remake:
1. Henry Silva and Angie Dickinson were in the original film, and if you look closely at the start of the boxing match in the remake you'll see them greeting Andy Garcia. Silva, BTW, voiced Bane for BTAS and TNBA.
2. Garcia, talking on the phone, says "Tell Mr. Levin he can watch the fight on TV. He of all people must get HBO." Gerald Levin is CEO of AOL Time Warner, which owns WB (which made "Oceans 11") and HBO.

My girlfriend who I had to force to see this movie, came out really liking it. The huge names will always attract people but whether or not it makes the movie good is another question. In this case it did. It was a very good movie and very fun to watch. My 66 year old dad came out of the showing before us with his lady friend and said he really liked it too. My dad, who never really watches movies has been going recently because of his lady friend. He watched Spy Game the week before and liked it. LOL, I just have to laugh there about my dad.
Anyways, I would defineatly recomend Ocean's 11 to anyone. I loved the card game at the begining of the movie with all the "teeny bopper" actors playing themselves.

We're about halfway through November now, but it's never too late for a Movie Talkback of the Month (http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?p=851557#post851557). I dug this gem of a movie thread out of the archives a few months ago and so here we are.
The Movie Talkback of the Month highlights some of the previously released movies in the Movie talkbacks From A to Z section (http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?p=830473#post830473). Sometimes they will be new threads and other times they will be selected from the current list like this one. Hopefully this will help foster some discussion in these threads. Look for the current Movie Talkback of the Month below the current releases in the Movie Talkback Thread Collection (http://forums.toonzone.net/forumdisplay.php?f=81).
I never saw the original (figures), but I loved this movie. It was fun to watch. Having all the stars in it didn't hurt it one bit.

After watching this movie, I watched the original and man is there such a difference.
The Sodderberg version was quite enjoyable! The acting, script, and overall storytelling was excellent. It was intelligent and cool, with plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing as to how they were going to pull this off. Clooney and Pitts characters played off of each other well and stole the movie I thought... Not that the other characters didnt have their moments and chances to get to know them (hell, Basher was my favorite character). The week it came out on DVD it was immediately in my collection I thought it was that good when seeing it in theaters. :p
The only weakest link was Tess and Julia's portrail of her. I thought she didnt have enough background and it felt like Julia was stiff, not knowing how to play her affectively.
All in all, its a great movie... better than its predecessor, which was nothing more than a badly written buddy/Rat Pack movie.

Whew. That explains it. When I saw the thread, I wondered who the madman was posting an "Oceans 11" Talkback two years after it came out. And when I saw the madman was me, I was really confused!
I saw it a second time in the theater after posting on this. When I first posted, I didn't mention how good Andy Garcia was in it. He made the movie on the second time out, and I missed him in every scene he wasn't in.

BTW... Is Ocean's Twelve worth watching? In my opinion, it wasn't as good as Ocean's Eleven, but was most definitely worth watching. The only people I wouldn't recommend it to are people who didn't like Eleven or felt Eleven was barely worth watching. Based on your comments, PowerZord, I say go for it.

This is far from Soderbergh's best work (that would be Traffic), however its probably his "funnest" film by far.

Which guy was Henry Silva?IMDb lists him as "Boxing Spectator" so it's likely that the DCAU's better Bane was just a face in the crowd. Here is what he looks like (http://uk.imdb.com/gallery/granitz/1714/HenrySilva_Kahn_674445_400.jpg.html?seq=2) (provided there aren't a ton of Henry Silvas out there).
One review I read back when the film applies greatly to this film: "It's about cool guys doing cool things in a cool way." (I forget if that's an exact quote, but that's basically what he wrote)
This film was just so cool and awesome. Too bad Ocean's Twelve was complete crap until the final 10 minutes or so. But since Ocean's Thirteen is putting the gang back in the casino and no longer on the run, here's hoping a return to the former glory.

Saw this recently, found it very enjoyable. It's a very lightweight movie, by design, but it's also very light on its feet. It's driven by one thing and one thing only of course: star power. Clooney has the kind of Cary Grant/Clark Gable-esque suaveness that make his effortlessly charming and the rest of the cast is lots of fun. And elegant blend of 60s vibe with modern slickness.
