NBC and FOX Kids aren't the only broadcast networks who will be drastically changing their Saturday morning blocks come fall 2002. Now, there's word that ABC may be dropping their "Disney's One Saturday Morning" block in favor of a Saturday edition of "Good Morning America." "GMA" has seen its ratings steadily increase, coming within striking distance of NBC's hit "Today" news show. "Disney's One Saturday Morning" ratings have been in a decline in the past year or so, ranking fourth among children.

In addition to that report, UPN, which airs "Disney's One Too" on weekdays and on Sunday mornings, is considering launching its own Saturday morning block according to TV Insite (http://www.tvinsite.com/index.asp?layout=story_stocks&articleid=CA185652&doc_id=60108&pubdate=12/10/2001).

UPN, which is owned by Viacom, is anxious in becoming more actively involved in the kid market. UPN could air programs from Nickelodeon, like CBS does with its Saturday morning block or go with programs from Disney. "Fox getting out of the weekday business and other new entrants, combined with the overall assets of Viacom or even Disney, may create real opportunities for us. The kids demo is an important one for us," UPN COO Adam Ware told TV Insite.

As previously reported here at TZN, Discovery Communications will be programming NBC's Saturday morning block in the fall of 2002. FOX Kids is currently taking bids from Nickelodeon, Warner Bros., Nelvana, DIC, Mainframe and various other children programmers. An announcement may come as soon as this week regarding who will program the block.
