I'd once read an article in Toon Zone News about CN's "Adult Swim" being popular with kids 6-11 (?!?). The writer thought it was unusual, and so did I...until I accessed the message boards at Nick.com just the other night, and found messages for "Adult Swim" on the "More TV" message board. Judging from the number of messages I saw about "Adult Swim," there are definitely younger kids watching!
Cowboy Bebop and Home Moviesare the shows of choice...at least on that particular message board.
Something for the "Adult Swim" programmers to think about...

Parents can't sue Cartoon Network over adult material that is protected by disclaimer and establishment.
If the FCC were regulating network television, they COULD do something about it, but they have already said that they would not interfere with network standards anymore.

I have yet to see anything on Adult Swim that truly is worthy of their disclaimer. Kids see far worse on other channels and in movies. Aside from a few scenes in Cowboy Bebop, there is hardly anything that extreme in the line up.

Well, Mission Hill is a LOT more adult than most of the shows on Adult Swim, although a lot of is is still innuendo. It's not exactly the "cute" innuendo either, like you would see in Brak Show or Birdman. :)

So much of that goes over kids heads, though. While they may pick up on some of it, they see things thru different eyes than we do. I can say there have been TV shows I watch now that I saw when I was a kid and am amazed at how much I missed and what they were putting into those shows. Fawlty Towers is a great example, which has alot of innuendo which totally went over my head when I was a kid.
That disclaimer at the beginning of Adult Swim is almost like for NYPD Blue or some show like that. While I am not complaing it's there, I am actually glad they have it, cuz that leaves room for Adult Swim to grow and if they do branch out into more adult oriented shows then nobody can fault them for changing mid stream. But I am just making an observation about the current line up, is all.

Like kids were going to actually obey the disclaimer?
How many of us are under 17 here? Come on, show some hands!

I agree with Calhoun07. Have you seen some of the stuff on Nick? It's worse than a majority of the stuff on Adult Swim. Invader Zim has tons of material that shouldn't been seen like kids ("Dark Harvest" is an episode where Zim starts stealing kid's organs and putting them inside himself.) This is thanks to Jhonen Vasquez (Johnny the Homicidial Maniac), but still it's so strange. Ren and Stimpy also comes to mind.
I also doubt that many of those 6-11 kids could even stay up long enough to watch Cowboy Bebop. If I was a kid, I imagine the series would be almost impossibly boring to me. There is more than plenty of dialogue scenes, lots of the bounty hunters doing nothing, and lots of scenes of all of them complaining. I would expect them to watch it for a couple minutes, then go change it to something more interesting (to them).

Well, there has been a bit of language in most of the shows (Home Movies being the exception), and don't forget all the innuendos in SeaLab (the implied sex through the wetsuits springs to mind). So I can understand the disclaimer.

I'm under 17, but older than 11. Okay, yeah, I'm 15. But, c'mon, like there's anything on Adult Swim ya don't see in a PG-13 movie (they bleep out sh*t in Space Ghost). And besides, like someone else here said, CN can't be sued for that. There's a discalimer. Whether or not kids read it doesn't matter. There's a disclaimer, and in the legal world that's all that matters. Heck, a guy even reads it to ya, so kids don't need to read.
And like another person said, kids miss so much. I saw Batman: Mask of the Phantasm the day it came out, and I watched it again 4 or 5 years later and I was amazed at how much I'd missed.

Hmmm, I haven't seen that movie in a while, maybe I should watch it again. :wakko:

here's a great idea: dedicated PARENTING!!!
don't rely on the TV as a babysitter
spend time with your child instead of running off to the golf course or shopping or company picnic number 342342
explain in common terms what is ok and not ok to do
look at japan; they have almost no problems with adolescents/teens
I am getting quite sick of everyone pointing fingers at this and that instead of pausing and looking at what they are ( or as the case may be, aren't) doing
ok it is 7:30am, i just got off of a nightshift and I am rambling and drifting, time to sleeeeep
to reinforce my point, the ever poignant Tycho and Gabe

Mission Hill will definatly make the block worthy of the disclaimer. Having seen the entire series, there is some very risque stuff on that show that is VERY mature. I wouldn't be surprise if the show gets a TV-14 rating. It's TV-PG (sometimes TV-18) up here in Canada. Still, the show is also very, very good. The 'Real World' episode spoof alone is worth seeing the series.

What are 6-11 year olds doing up that late, anyway? Hmm...

Why don't you think about it and let us have some fun. We're not responsible for babysitting other peoples' kids, killjoy/

That's an excellent point. If kids get to see the Sopranos cuz it comes on at 8pm, do the programmers have to shoulder that repsonsibility?? Hey, Adult Swim programmers, just keep up the great work and keep bringing in the great shows! I think you're doing a great job.

Word to that. Parents can sue a TV network all they want, and in the end they could win. But does that make it the TV network's fault? Hardly.
Also, I have a real problem with anyone saying how old you should be to watch something, I think it really depends on the kid. Kudos to CN for the wording in their disclaimer (saying what's coming up instead of saying "don't watch this").

Boy, do I ever agree witht that. If parent's are letting their kids stay up until 12 am on a Sunday night, they probably don't give a rat's @ss what they're watching, and therefore, can't bitc# when they see a show with Space Invaders telling small balls of meat to smoke and drink (just a little reference to Aqua Teen Hunger Force).
