Eh, it's just "Sven Hoek," Tad. You musta had a certain crotchety ex-TTTP-er on the brain when you posted this. ;)

Is it just me, or did VHI leave in some of Ren's threats during his tirade in SVEN HOEK that Nickelodeion cut out? I don't remember seeing the "I'm gonna twist your arm off" part on Nick.

Yeah. Those weenies at Nick probably thought that Ren went too far with the threats, which is funny because, for the first few airings on Nick, I could swear that the threats were left alone.

I'm glad that I didn't fall asleep on this ep; midnight and beyond is moider on the cartoon fan.

I'm pretty sure the version that aired was the same as the version that originally aired on Nick (although Nick may have cut out some scenes when they briefly brought back R&S a year ago). However, that scene was originally longer and included more threats that were fully animated, but these scenes were cut out before making it to the finished version. It's really too bad too, since Ren's acting in this scene is probably the greatest performance of subdued psychotic rage in animated history--it gives me chills every single time.

I think Ren's greatest psychotic rage is in SPACE MADNESS, especially when he's in the floating tub of water.

John K. was always great playing a crazy Ren. One of the reasons why Billy West just didn't cut it when he took over Ren's voice after John left.

Yeah, at some point during the third or fourth season, Nick snipped Ren's threat a bit. The "I'm going to TEAR your arms out of the socket" line was removed and went right to "I'm gonna hit ya..." It kind of ruined the timing a bit.

That hasn't been the only change to the episode since it first aired. At some point between the second and third seasons, the episode's soundtrack was re-mixed. The Alfred Hitchcock theme was removed from the opening scene and was replaced with a "clock ticking" score. And IIRC, Stimpy and Sven's voices in the closet were given an echoed effect. This is the version that was released on the "Classics II" video.

Ren's threat is perhaps my favorite moment from the whole series. Actually, the line that was edited out from the get-go ("I'm gonna gouge your eyes out!") doesn't really add anything to the overall scene. Ren is drawn a little uglier, and the layout doesn't look great. It would be cool if some sort of "director's cut" was released on DVD, but honestly the scene plays better the way it first aired.

Of course as I type this, I hear the infamous line on "The Flintstones," "He is Ollie, you are Sven."

I remembered mid-way through that R&S was on, and tuned in JUST in time for Ren's threats/rant! The highlight to this cartoon for me, too. This rant is one that my brother-in-law's brother and I loved to immitate during R&S's original run.

All of Ren's rants are the best ones.
But the most chilling Renrant has to be from Stimpy's Fan Club, the extended overnight sequence. Probably Ren at his most disturbing - delightfully disturbing - after which he was disturbing in a BAD way(Games era)... think Hermit Ren (yyyicchhh!)

Ah, "Stimpy's Fan Club". Another classic episode. My favorite line (well, it's not so much the line as it is the delivery): "They think he's a god, but he's as mortal as we."

Actually, IMHO the absolute best scene of Ren's rage is in "Man's Best Friend" when Ren has had enough of George Liquor's tyranny, and he takes out his frustration with the wooden oar "Raging Bull" style.

Ren does kind of scare me once in awhile :p too.... believe it or not, I've met people who resemble him and his character in a LOT of ways.....

Luckily, thanks to a tape trade I made last year, I got a copy of Sven Hoek with the original soundtrack mix and a bizzare pre-release version of it without music and sound effects, full unedited voice tracks and longer pauses between shots, indicating certain scenes needed tighter editing. Another scene that never made it into the finished version is Sven and Stimpy playing "sword swallower" in the closet. Make of it what you will.

I also have other pre-release versions of Dog Show and Powdered Toast Man, similar to the one above. I have a pre-release copy of Out West that is entirely in pencil test.

Finally, I have the full versions of Big House Blues and Son of Stimpy that i wish would air uncut nowadays.
