Since they showed the war movie on I-Channel/AZNTV yesterday, do you guys thought the movie was good or not?
To me, I thought it was good & sad besides Kiki's Delivery Service & Spirited Away because of the siblings trying to struggle for survival for food and it was sad that Setsuko had to die:crying: of starvation which I almost cried at that part.
If you're going to say the ending in your first post you MUST either put it in spoiler tags or write "Spoilers" in the thread title.
I'm glad you enjoyed the film. Takahata is a wonderful director. You should check out "My Neighbors the Yamadas" when Disney releases it later this year or next. It's entirely different subject matter but the quiet, emotional sensibility is still there.

Grave of the Fireflies was on AZN last night? Aw, maaaaaaaaaaaan! And I was looking for it on the Movies on Demand channel (it's part of the ImaginAsian film festival this month).
Hopefully, they'll be airing it again this weekend. Definitely a DVR show!
(And I can watch it for free, besides!)

Well... the ending is rather clear from the film's very first scene.
I thought it was a good movie, but the "shock" of the ending wasn't great enough to have much emotional effect on me.

You know, I didn't really like the decision to show Seta's death at the beginning of the film. This either:
A:spoils the ending of the film.
B:Leaves the viewer confused and able to not even remember that he died at the beginning of the film.
I am one of the B people. I mean, I didn't even know who Seta was at the beginning of the film, so when he died I just thought it was some random person dying. I had to watch it a second time to realize that the main character died at the beginning of the film.

The circumstances of Setsuko's death aren't apparant until the end of the film.

Though I can understand that perspective, the whole "thought it was some random person dying" is kinda the point of the movie-- to humanize the experience of one of the "random people" who died in World War II, to move us from the perspective of the passersby in the beginning to a more intimate one.

Even dubbed the movie was really good, at first I was annoyed because they stretched to screen from letterbox to full screen, something that distorts the picture quality alot. I made a talk back in advance and I mentioned the movie was showing, I guess nobody read it =).

Man I have that on DVD and the only part I got sick in was the siblings go to the bathroom at the same time.

Shock? It's not the shock that's the sad thing. It's that Setsuko's death is coming no matter what Seita does, no matter how hard he tries, and we know it from the beginning. That's why it's so sad.
I actually have the DVD :anime: . It's one of the most amazing animated movies of all times! (Actually one of the most amazing movies of all times and types).
It's beautiful and full of humanity. But yes, I kinda cry the whole movie :crying:... But it was damn worthy!

I never thought of that, and that's a really good point.
Hopefully, they'll be airing it again this weekend. Yes, repeat on Saturday. And the short intro was really nice.

That was a sad movie to be sure. Just saw it for the 1st time about 3 months ago.
I think what reinforced the tragic overtones though was the fact that the war was coming to an end. If his little sister could have held on for a little while longer she might have stood a better chance.
Anyway, it was a good movie, I hold it in very high regards.

Pretty sad movie, all in all. Only two things I hated about it:
1) I just hated that cold-fish aunt of theirs, who treats her daughter and their lodger friend ("They're working hard for this nation!") better than her sister's now-orphaned (and doomed) children.
If she has a conscience (which I doubt), Seita and Setsuko will be haunting her all the rest of her days...
2)The commercial interruptions! (Oh well, they have to pay for all this programming somehow...)

It really did make me upset for a little while. I had read that it would have this kind of effect on you, but it doesn't really hit you until a few hours after you see the film and start to think about it.
