Who would be an apt replacement for the voice of the Mad Hatter if he was ever to return to animation? I know Roddy had a unique voice with a certain whimsical charm, but surely, if they can replace the actors and actresses of characters like Superman, Batgirl, Alfred and Robin, they could rustle someone out? Any ideas? :)

They already have, or so I thought.

I was under the impression that, with Roddy gone, they were simply going to retire the character. His voice was the key thing that made the character memorable.

But, Maxie and I were just talking about this in an earlier thread... bringing Hatter back might work if they completely revamped the character, say, made him extremely dark and twisted. After all, he blames Bats for his miserable life, and I'm sure that growing obscession would completely consume him over time.

Yeah, it is very hard to find a sound-alike. And if you think Newbern-as-Daly-but-not-quite is a little jarring, think how more so a not-quite-McDowall would sound. That's why I think it would be better to restart the character, or at least make him a lot different.

In that other thread Hatter referred to, I suggested John Hurt. The dry and shrivelled voice that Hurt is so good at would really fit the TNBA redesign. Alternately, Derek Jacobi would make a fine voice if you still wanted the Mad Hatter to be urbane and polished.

DR. BELCH - I am a huge fan of both (and especially) Tim Curry and Malcolm MacDowell, but their voices just wouldn't fit the Hatter, in my opinion.
Retirement for the character could be the best thing, I suppose, but he's such a great character that it would be a shame for him not to re-appear. I like the suggestions Maxie. :)
Green Lantern - Where did you find that little nugget out?

You can also find his picture here (http://www.what-a-character.com/cgi-bin/display.cgi?id=982796538).

I recognize him, but I can't put a voice to the face.

He was a voice for the Smurfs? Which one? Scary...

The IMDB lists him under 'additional voices', but hearing his work as The Pastmaster on "SWAT Kats" makes me think that he might make a good Hatter.
