...why is 65 episodes the "magic number" for syndication? Is it a tried and true statistic, or just some unwritten industry standard?

I am not sure about exactly why, but 65 episodes works out to exactly 13 weeks, which is the length of an average season on TV, so that might be so they can have enough episodes for one whole season to air every week day for the next 13 weeks. That's my guess, anyway.
