IMHO the fact that Shredder is an evil Utrom is a nod to Krang. They've kind of made Krang and Shredder one being in this show.

You know come to think of it, has April EVER been kidnapped in the new show? For someone who was captured by Shredder like every other episode in the old cartoon, I don't think April has ever been the damsel in distress in the new toon aside from the initial Mouser thing.
