Why? Why not?

Alan Rickman was born on February 21st, 1946 in London. A graduate of the Royal Academy of Art, he worked extensively in theater in the 70's, and made several television appearances. In the 80's, Rickman was cast in the Royal Shakespeare Company's production of Les Liasons Dangereuse. Rickman came with the show to Broadway in 1986, where Joel Silver approached him to play Hans Gruber in the movie Die Hard. Rickman has appeared in over two dozen films since that time, but has also continued to be active on the stage.

In addition to voicing Marvin the Robot in the upcoming Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, a play directed by Rickman, My Name Is Rachel Corrie, is currently playing at the Royal Court Theater in London.Rickman also reprises the role of Severus Snape in the fourth Harry Potter movie later this year.

Trivia

For the shot in Die Hard where Hans Gruber falls from the top of the building, Rickman was actually falling from a 20-foot high model. He was holding on to a stunt man and falling on to an air bag. To get the right reaction, the stunt man dropped Rickman on the count of two, not three.

Rickman voices 'Marvin the Paranoid Android' in Hitchhiker's Guide. Warwick Davis, his co-star from the Harry Potter movies, is the man inside the robot suit.

Alan Rickman was hand-picked to play Snape by RK Rowling (though Tim Roth was supposedly asked originally).

Honestly, I haven't seen much that he's been in, except for Harry Potter; though I do find him to be the perfect Severus Snape.

Awesome!

That's really the only word that can sum up what I think of Alan Rickman. It's hard to believe DIE HARD was his very first film role, and what a role it was, and to have it be so loved and remembered by so many. Hell, it even made the AFI list of Top 100 Heroes & Villains.

GALAXY QUEST and a guest stint on KING OF THE HILL show that he can really shine with comedy (which he said in an interview is his favorite genre), and I wish he'd get more comedic parts. He's great as Prof. Snape, also, and had me fooled he was the bad guy in the first Harry Potter movie. A personal favorite is the evil Elliott Marston in QUIGLEY, DOWN UNDER, and, of course, who can forget the outrageous Sheriff of Nottingham from ROBIN HOOD: PRINCE OF THIEVES.

Whenever I see he's in a movie, I'm likely to instantly have interest in seeing it.

Faculty Rivalry: Rickman and Harry Potter co-star Robbie Coltrane ('Hagrid') also starred together in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, where Rickman as the Sheriff attempted to hang the son of Little John (Coltrane).

Where do you read this? Little John was actually played by an actor named Nick Brimble. I didn't see Coltrane anywhere in the credits.

No problem. Now that I think about it, with those big beards they have as each character, they do look alike.

Also just remembered Rickman was in THE JANUARY MAN with Kevin Kline and PRINCE OF THIEVES co-star Mary Elizabeth Mastrontonio(sp?). He was very good there, too, in a slightly-comic role.

Little John vs Hagrid.

Longer, colored hair. Talk kinda similar. It COULD'VE been the same guy!

Anyway, back on topic... Another great, rarely-seen movie is Closet Land. Alan Rickman is the interrogator, and Madeleine Stowe is a child's book writer accused of hiding political messages in her stories. The entire movie takes place in a single room with just the two of them.

I love Alan Rickman - he always brings a sense of class to his roles, no matter how despicable his characters are. :)

HAAAAAAAAAAANS!

In GALAXY QUEST, I love his deadpan delivery of "By Grabthar's Hammer . . . . . . . . what a savings." lol!!
