The Charlie brown Christmas special ran tonight on ABC. It was in its uncut glory, and had a very interesting documentary shown after the special. The print was very clear, it was not time compressed either. ABC treated it with respect.

Was "Hark the Harald Angel" uncut? And will it RERUN (a little "peanuts" humor for you guys) again?

They faded it long enough to excise the Coke plug...otherwise it was as Matt said.

About the little documentary afterward, it's good to have some "behind the scenes" on the CB specials. They showed clips from an unsold documentary that M&M produced before CBC that featured the Peanuts gang in FULL animation - kinda cool. And the Ford commercials were a treat too.

BTW, someone needs to get Bill Melendez to sit down with a computer and get his memoirs written - with his background, I suspect it'd be an interesting read!

In the original showing, the special was sponsored by Coca Cola.

Yes, but what was the plug like that actually affected the special itself?

I've never seen it, but after they finish the song, they all yell "Merry Christmas from your local Coca-Cola bottler!" or "Merry Christmas From Coca-Cola!" I don't recall wich one specifically. Now they fade it out before that happens.

Also, there was a scene in which someon slides across the ice, slamming into a Coca-Cola sign.

what did they keep in that made it "uncut"?

Well, I believe the special has aired with cuts to Linus' recitation on the Bible, but it was met with such backlash that it was replaced...but don't hold me to that. I just noted that it was uncut because it was on a new network, and luckily it had everything that belonged there, no edits (except the aforementioned Coke ad, I don't think that counts. )

I think to change your name you have to PM Brian and have him change the name from your old profile. I don't think you can sign up as a new user and have your old profile transferred over.

I've watched this show almost every year since it premiered and over the years I've noticed the following cuts :

1. The show has been time compressed

2. The skating segment at the beginning was cut to include "brought to you by" ads and footage was missing.

3. Scene transitions were cut, like Charlie and Linus' walk to the Christmas Tree yard

4. Snoopy's dance on Schroeder's piano

5. Sally and Linus' segment "Isn't he the cutest thing?"

6. I don't remember the Bible verse being cut, Matthew, but it could have been. BTW, I thought it interesting when Melendez mentioned that even back in '65 there were people wanting to cut the "religious element" out of this special!

7. As far as the Coke thing goes, after the last credit there appeared over the gang
the words "Merry Christmas from your
Coca-Cola Bottlers", then the end title
card.

This years' showing had everything - exept the last item - just as I remember it.

Now, can any of you guess what they cut out of Jones' "Grinch" back in the '80's?

I never knew they edited "How the Grinch Stole Christmas."

What did they edit from the Grinch? Did the Whos eat a Hormell brand roast beast? Was there an objectionable scene? Did the opening originally have the Whos dance and sing around a pack of cigarettes like the original opening of "I Love Lucy?"

I know what they changed to the grinch-(i have the CBS version from 87 or so on tape). Three things:
1. When the card revealing the title comes on, the sound is dubbed to have someone say "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" on the soundtrack.
2. They cut the verse of "you're a mean one, mr. grinch" that began with, "You're a rotter, mr. grinch". time reasons, i guess?
3. They cut the shot of the grinch grinning while at the foot of the Who kid's bed.

at least those are the ones i remember.

In ACharlie Brown Christmas, wasn't there a scene of the kids throwing snowballs at a fence edited out for awhile? Or am I thinking of something else?

Actually, there really was a scene where the kids throw snowballs at the fence. It was never edited when I saw it on CBS.

You're right - the only other cut I have on my old (circa 1985?) copy is the ride from the Grinch's cave cuts from after he says "giddy-yap" to his entry into Whoville!

And Chuck & Ted worked so hard to pad the story out!

That's exactly the scene that was edited. I first saw A Charlie Brown Christmas way back in 1973 with the snowball sequence intact, and the scene was cut when it aired in 1974. The scene wasn't restored until 1998.

My! I had forgotten about that part. Only mine does it slightly differently....they go to commercial at the fade-out right before they go down the first hill, then after the commercial, they show him going down the hill, but then go to him going down the hill in whoville.

This is so bizzare. Why do they do this??

For A charlie Brown Christmas, I dug out my copy off CBS from 1987, and this is where it is different compared to the 1997 or so video release:

1. The end of the skating sequence was different. The video ended with the picture and sound fading out after the title came on. The CBS version froze the screen right after the title came on, and the sound track faded out, but then the sound track began the song again from the start! over this, though, was a plug for Mounds and Almond Joy, and then the picture cut to a shot of the products.

2. The aforementioned "Snowball scene" was cut-it went from Linus commenting on the ripness of the snowflakes to Schroder telling Lucy that she has a costomer-I allways wondered why the music ended so abruptly in the scene-seeing the video, now i know.
