Today I was browsing thru the used Playsation games at gamestop and come across a game called Project Horned Owl. Now I look at the cover and I think to myself, the artstyle of the characters looks like Shirow Masamune. Now I didn't even look at the credits or anything and I knew nothing about this game. But I kept thinking to myself that the cover was designed by SM. Now I own 3 outta the 4 Intron Depot books and havn't seen anything on Horned Owl in there beforehand. However as soon as I got home, I checked a few sources to see if the game was worth getting(it was only 5 bucks, however a bad game for 5 bucks is useless when you can save the 5 for a better game) apparently it was not worth getting, but I did find out that tthe cover was designed by Shirow Masamune....

The images from Horned Owl is in the 4th Intron depot, I believe...
Shirow Masamune is more of a graphic design/poster/ilustration artist by trade with manga as a side hobby. It has to be, as he works slowly with his manga.

Therefore there are two types of game/anime he gets involved in:

Those that are actually based on his stories in the manga form, like GITS and APPLESEED...

Then, there are those small jobs he gets for designing a few women characters and/or mecha in video games (e.g. Horned Owl) and anime (e.g.'LandLock').
In thiis case, he has little if anything to do with the script of the anime/game. In the case of LandLock, all his character designes were heavily modified/abandoned, with the only thing remaining being the front cover art of the VHS. (yet they still had the nerve to put 'By Shirow Masamune' on the cover! How dare they!)

Shirow put food on the table for himself and his pet spiders by drawing magazine covers, illustrations for posters/erotic calenders, and video game merchandise. If you got all the existing Intron Depot books, you pretty much have a record of what Shirow REALLY do for a living.

He's a bit of a pervert too, but hey, a single, unattached man can draw what he likes.

Isn't Shirow Masamune an English teacher?

He's a school teacher of some sort IIRC, hence why he goes under a psuedonym. Especially considering some of his "risque" poster sets; they'd probably kick him out of the school otherwise.

He'd probably get away with it. Anyway, he's hardly the only artist to be a recluse: there's really no need for anybody to know who the artist is/what he looks like, as the art should speak for itself. Probably saves him having to read fan mail...

No, it just saves him from having to deal with punk students and faculty members giving him crap for drawing porn. He gets his anonymity. His fanmail probably goes to a P.O. Box or something like that, so it's not like accepting fan-mail will screw with his anonymity. Might even be funny cause he might get a piece of fanmail from some who is also his student and doesn't even know it, at least in theory.

So, wait, we're patting ourselves on the back for recognizing an artist's work?
