Ah, fear vs love. Lets consult the "Wheel of Cliche' Sayings."
"You always hurt the ones you love." -Well that's not good.
"Love conquers all." -Spiffy.
I think it's better to be loved. There are alot of drawbacks to being feared, the biggest of those drawbacks being that people don't love you. I think the people that want to be feared just didn't get enough hugs growing up.

Hey that made me think of a subject for a new post! Contradicting cliches.

People tend to scheme against you when they fear you, forever looking to exploit your tiniest error in judgement so they can crush you. Whereas if one is loved unconditionally, one's mistakes are forgiven.

I wish I were loved.
I'm just feared.

I want my enemies to fear me to the point that they wouldn't even THINK of doing anything bad to me, and my loved ones to love me.
But, I'll just settle for no enemies and lotsa lovin' friends and family. Well, too much love is no good, since I really don't like my relatives checking up on me every few weeks.

Well, the title of this thread made me think of that line said by Powers in Shriek. For a person in that position, who wants power and control, it's probably better to be feared. However, i would rather be loved enough so that people wouldn't think of being mean, or anything. So it's love for me.

On one hand, I enjoy being feared. I'm a very solemn guy, and I do enjoy my peace.
On the otherhand..I have a girlfriend now. And that feeling, it's just so special. It's a love I have never felt before, and while I still like my time alone, I spend it thinking of her(aww...isn't that frickin' sweet? ).
hahahaha, anyway. I'd say I prefer the love. :p

NO WAY! I just had to read THE PRINCE too! :D
I say loved. Not only can you do a lot more in this way, but history has shown that empires built on fear have fallen. Look at Nazis. However, loved leaders have not only been able to do much for thier countries, but they are remembered well in history. Caesar was loved; he became Rome's #1 man when you think of that place, same for George Washington in America. Elizabeth 1 for England. Ghandi for India. They all were doing wonderful things for thier countries, and they were loved. Meanwhile, Stalin killed 30 million people and cement in the U.S.S.R. an economic system that was rather inefficent. Shaka Zulu's policies crumbled after his death. And Tojo's war policy left Japan ruined after WW2.

There are some situations, though, when fear and love are the same thing. Fear can be interpreted in many different ways. You can fear someone by being afraid of them, by not wanting to come within two feet of them because you are so scared. But fear can also mean respect. You fear someone, and therefore show honor to them. By respecting them, you can love them. And fear can also mean awe. Something you are not exactly afraid of, you don't exactly respect them, but they are feared, in a sense.
So, in other words, I don't know. ;)

maybe i'm going off on a tangent... but the worst of all is not being loved the way you want :(
