Okay, is there a Japanese expression for when a show (anime, etc.) isn't as good as it used to be, like our "jump the shark" expression?

Having fun with katakana I see. Incase you were all wondering he just wrote Jump the Shark in Japanese (I think).

Yeah, romanized thats "jyanpu de Shyaku"
Yeah, romanized thats "jyanpu de Shyaku"
Well, actually it's "jampu za shaaku," which is the correct way of katakanaizing that expression.
Unfortunately I don't know if there's an actual equivelant to that expression.

One Japanese site I saw had it as サメを跳び越える (same wo tobikoeru) but that was just a direct translation of the English phrase used while they were explaining its meaning. I don't believe they have an equivalent expression.

??? I'm sure there is an equivalent expression, but I don't know what it is offhand.
I'm sure if you post on a Japanese (as in language) anime board someone will try to supply an answer.

I mean, I'm sure they can explain the concept but I don't think they have a single, simple, handy phrase that encompasses the idea of a TV show suddenly going bad in the same way "jump the shark" does.

Unless they get Happy Days reruns.

"Jump the Shark" is a pure American term to describe the episode of Happy Days where the Fonz litterally jumps a shark. This episode marked the downhill slide for the show and the term "jump the shark" in regards to shows that were good but then turned bad was coined.
And now you know...;)

It is applicable to anime, isn't it? An anime that also starts promisingly good, with a good premise, intriguing characters and unique settings, only to end up crappy bad all the way down, filled with desperate anime cliches like a dozen panty shots, or killing off characters.

It's a general TV show term. Any kind of show can jump the shark, really.

It had to be done!
My dad just finished doing a workshop production of the Happy Days musical by Paul Williams in LA. He is, unsurprisingly, an incredibly kind man.
Random facts.

LOL. Paul Williams. And I say unsurprisingly because, come on, the man wrote "The Rainbow Connection."

Certainly it applies to anime. Who knows, maybe we can teach our Japanese cousins a new phrase. :D

From GFAQs:
The thing is, most Japanese shows (excluding things like talk and music shows) are normally created with an episode cap in mind, and so they never have to get to the "jump the shark" point. So the answer is no.

The thing is, most Japanese shows (excluding things like talk and music shows) are normally created with an episode cap in mind, and so they never have to get to the "jump the shark" point. Length has nothing to do if a show "jumps the shark" or not. A 26 episode show can jump the shark just as much as a 200 episode show. Examples are episode 14 of Trigun and episode 26 of FMA.

Episode 21 of Evangelion.
Yes, there is the episode endcap, but alot can happen between 1 and the ending episode.
Take for instance, F-Zero: GP Legend in Japan.
Episodes 30-39 was one gigantic shark leap. They revealed that Captain Falcon was... Jody Summer's brother, the SAME one that was said to have been toasted by Zoda's bazooka in episode 9's flashback. I can accept most of the changes in story line and this *IS* an alternate universe after all, but I WILL not accept that crap they called a 'plot twist' in any form. Cousins, maybe, but siblings...? No.
Then came episode 51, which is one that even some Japanese F-Zero fans take issue with.

Rockman.exe Stream is a good example of a franchise that "jumps the shark". Mind you I still like it as much as I do the other two seasons but c'mon, even I can't deny it's "problems".
Especially now that we've learned that Colonel's operator from Battle Network 5 is the old man who dies in Episode 8 and that we meet his younger version in about 3-4 weeks when Rockman goes back in time to stop Shademan from altering the future where the Darkloids rule.

yeah
considering 'jump the shark' is an all American phrase; i doubt there is a word similar to link it, since it has a culture and history background.
i'm sure other places have their own way of saying "the show has taken a turn for the worse", but 'jump the shark' isn't one of them.

I was bored and decided to do a proper literal translation; I think this is correct:
鮫の上に飛び越す
"Same no ue ni tobikosu" which literally means "to jump over the top of a shark".
