She hedged the bet a bit, but ADV Films DVD Coordinator Janice Williams said at a recent convention that Gantz, the bloody, violent, dark, straight up evil story about unwilling assassins, wont stay two episodes per DVD as originally planned. “It looks at this point like it wont be 13 discs,” she said, which was the original plan for the release of the 26 episodes. No doubt, ADV is still excited about the release: “Gantz sells on all the violence, nudity and sex, but its really about how people deal with the situation they've been put in,” Williams said. But maybe fan outcry over two episodes per DVD was higher than expected. Unknown when the volumes (two are out now) will have more episodes.
I might buy it if they increase the eps per disc

I wouldn't be suprised if ADV saw dismal sales on the first two volumes and went back to the drawing board on marketing the show. Here's hoping it gets better, because the first two episodes are really intriguing and more Rip Slyme is always good.

1. Sales of first few Gantz discs have been pretty good (in general, ADV's sales have been up this quarter compared to last year, with Gantz and DNAngel leading the pack.) I think they are just realizing they could be better still if they just gave into the fans.

2. Rip Slyme is the best part of the show IMHO. I wish I could see more and maybe reverse that decision, but I ain't paying for that show (see, 2 episode doesn't work.) Those first two episodes were just a little too turn off-ish for me, atleast at the moment. Heck, it maybe remarks more like that is getting ADV motivated to change the release schedule. Gantz maybe a good series, but the only way people will get passed the rawness may only be if they get bigger bites of it.

I know at least 3 people that arent' buying GANTZ just cuz of the ep count.

I'm sure if they go back and chage it (or once they finish, release one of those Z"perfect collections" then they'll be getting more sales.

ADV wanted to experiment halving the price (made possible by halving the ep count) because, as FUNi found out with the Fruits Basket ~$40 6-eps/DVD mediocre sales, consumers are more sensitive to price/DVD than price/ep.

The results from this experiment can determine whether ADV will go that route. (Notice that FUNi has never returned to the 6-ep/DVD route because that experiment was a failure.)

Um, where did you read Fruits Basket was a bomb? From what I read, FB was Funi's top selling title outside of DBZ and YYH (the no-plot-action-animes). In fact, I read that if Funi realized how popular FB was, they would have released it in 8 volumes.

Anyway, doesn't the art box for Volume 1 hold all 13 volumes? If so, then it looks like ADV will have to make a brand new one.

there's a difference between "bomb" and "mediocre sales"

the experiment was a faliure because it showed that people would not be willing to pay that much more just cuz the disk had more eps in it (something Geneon needs to learn too, the AiYori Aoshi disks are pricey as hell >_<) from what I understand, the FruBa box-set has been doing real well (but dont' quote me on that:sweat: )

Funimation wouldn't be pushing for second season if hadn't done well for them in the long term. It was just a slower burn than it would have been other because of the intial 40 dollar price point, but also because people didn't believe that Funimation could pull off a shoujo. Slowly, as people bought it, the word of mouth about just how excellent the release was began to snowball and sales started to pick up. They then dropped MSRP 10 bucks, and that got a bunch more people to jump on it. The boxset has also pushed it once again.

Seriously, it's done well for Funimation on the whole, particularly factoring in the considerable amount of merchandise sales it's been having the wallscrolls, clear posters and hats. I mean, they wouldn't be getting Fruba shirts into Hot Topic unless it was picking up a considerable fanbase, nor would they be doing a second wave of the Fruba hats. Funimation has been intelligent in the long term when it comes to managing the show because rather than say "well, we've done our discs, that's it." They've kept at promoting it, they've gradually ramped up the merch as the fanbase grew and demanded it, and basically, they've been very responsive to changes in the long term. It's that kind of management that might get it a second season at that.

My Gantz artbox says it'll carry the first six volumes. So I'm assuming that if they decide to change any time soon, they'll either start upping the episode count really big for the last few volumes, or make a mini-box to catch the spillovers they couldn't fit on six discs.

I'm guessing they've at least already pressed discs three and four so either they're gonna have nine episodes each for the last two discs or they're still gonna have to make another box just as originally planned, only sooner than they'd expected.

Yeah, 3 and 4 are pressed (someone won gantz 4 at the adv panel,) so I'd bet on a 3 disc spill over box.
