I caught some small episodes of the actual Pound Puppies series and fount it appauling in many areas, I know it's not fair to bash a show after seeing only two or three episodes, but sheesh...
...I say this because I have the Legend of Big Paw animated movie, and the quality of that was FAR ABOVE what I had seen in the series, voice acting, excellent story, Bone of Scone, and a darker tone and mood. I'm sure the episodes I was watching could'nt have possibly come from the people who produced that movie.
I read in another recent thread the series used to be good, could someone fill me in?
It's kind of like the first Care Bears movie, which was seriously darker than the second and third films where it was toned down to almost ridiculous levels (Care Bears II: New Generation had a great opening though when detailing the origins of the land of Care-A-Lot, but afterwards sort of winds down)

I feel the opposite. Big Paw has not aged well at all in my opinion. I loved it when I was younger, but upon recent viewings... wow. I can't believe I actually liked it as much as I did. The songs were good, but everything else was just... poor. The only saving grace was Whopper and Bright Eye's VAs from the series were in the movie. Cooler and Nose Marie didn't sound right, and Howler... they mangled Howler in the translation.
However, I think the series (The first season at least) was well written and humorous.
The second season, however, got WAY off track and tossed out all the humor in favor of a more 'Hogan's Heroes' type approach.
Just out curiosity, can you describe which episodes you saw? Because if they were S2 episodes, I STRONGLY recommend you check out eps from the first season, because those were the best eps IMO.

I agree...because I have both tapes somewhere in the garage. And I watched Legend of Big Paw to DEATH when I was little.

The episodes I watched were "King Whopper" and "Casey Come Home"
I have to diagree with Big Paw not aging well, I found it charming and far above certain other films, I'd gladly watch it again over something like say...N.I.M.P.H, which I heard was "on par" with Big Paw, if not better, I ended up liking that less though.
If you say the first season was better, the more power to you, could you give me specific examples?

Yeah, those two were S2 episodes. King Whopper was actually the best that particular season had to offer.
Where S2 would just spoof Hogan's Heroes, S1 poked fun at EVERYTHING, inlcuding itself. The show had tons of pop culture references for a mid eighties cartoon.
A good example is the season 1 episode 'Secret Agent Pup', in which the PP help a foreign dog named Pupnik, who is being chased by spy dogs, led by 'Clawfinger', who's smuggled a mind controlling gem in Pupnik's collar, which he unintentionally gives to Bright Eyes, leading into an all out James Bond spoofing. A few of things that get poked at in this episode:
- Bond flicks (The main spoof here, complete with the opening sequence)
- Dog food commercials (It makes it's own gravy! - Howler)
- Dukes of Hazzard
- Wheel of Fortune (You just won a trip to Nowhere, Fast! - Pup Sajak)
- And a nice little homage to other HB dog stars Scooby Doo, Doggy Daddy, Muttley and Huckleberry Hound.
Also, most of the S2 episodes were just two seperate stories, where S1's episodes were always half hour tales. Also, the Puppy Pound was in the hands of Holly, NOT Katrina, with the origins of the PP explained in 'How to Found a Pound'. It went totally unexplained how Katrina gained control of the pound in S2.
