COVER BY: TREVOR HAIRSINE
WRITER: WARREN ELLIS
PENCILS: TREVOR HAIRSINE
INKS: NELSON DECASTRO
THE STORY: Superstar Warren Ellis teams with hot newcomer Trevor Hairsine (ULTIMATE SIX) to tell a story of international intrigue that shakes every Ultimate book to its core! As world communications systems break down, the source of the anomaly is revealed as Tanguska, Russia. Nick Fury of S.H.I.E.L.D. leads a force comprised of Captain America, Black Widow and Sam Wilson to investigate, while, simultaneously, Charles Xavier of the X-Men dispatches his own team consisting of Jean Grey, Wolverine and Colossus. And what they discover there – and what happens next – defies belief! Collecting ULTIMATE NIGHTMARE #1-5.
-----------------------------------------------------------
I just bought the TPB of Ultimate Galactus chapter 1: Ultimate Nightmare (spoilerish title much? well, if it werne't for the obnoxious purple font I wouldn't have seen it on the shelf). This book had plenty of positive moments, and plenty of negative moments.
First the positive:
- The book did a good job of foreshadowing and really making the story feel like it was important in the grand scheme of things.
-Showing normal people's reactions to the "broadcast"
-Ultimate Falcon was alot cooler than I thought he'd be. But I don't know how much of his "I know more than all of you" vibe I can put up with before it gets annoying.
-Good way at explaining away the inherent silliness of "Vision" and "Galactus" as character names.
Negative:
- I didn't really jive with the art. Colossus looked too "normal" to me. Everyone that had long hair had it falling straight down. I realise the Ultimate books are trying for more realism but we can have a bit more suspension of disbeleif in regards to hairstyles. I'm particularly not likeing the "straight down" hair on Logan, it doens't fit him at all. The layout and strong blacks made it difficult to follow the action on the page at times.
-They totally dropped the ball if they were ever planning on introducing Ultimate Omega Red. Unless the dude Cap skewered was him, and if that was the case, some kind of reference to it would ahve been nice.
-Pretty much all of the conflicts between characters felt soooo forced. Wolverine getting all snippy at Jean and Peter for not even letting them RESPOND to his question? please. Plus the Ultmates fighting the X-men. gimme a break! Fury knows Xavier PERSONALLY. He knows how he acts. He knows that if the X-men are there, they're there for a reason (sure the reason they were there turned out to be bubkus, but noone knew that till later) but no, we got "Hey, X-men! I know their boss, let's KILL EM!" . And Wolverine's little angst-fest at the end was uncalled for. "some people pissed me off, maybe it's time some psycho alien came and devoured everything on our world". (IIRC vision said nothing about eating, Logan pulled that outta nowhere)
-I don't like Ultimate Cap. I can't put my finger on why, I just have yet to find one thing to like about the guy. But who knows, maybe it's part fo the Ultimate-way to want the audience to not like him.
Overall, it's opened an intriguing door, but nothing that couldn't have been told in 3 issues. I'm glad they didnt' try to shoehorn Spidey into this.
