Look at the bottom of the handle. Utrom!
Am I the first to catch this?
I believe it was first noticed when Return to New York first aired--I know that's when I first noticed it, althought I don't remember if I made mention of it then. However, I don't remember anybody mentioning it when the sword first appeared, in Darkness at the Edge of Town.
In any case, I've always liked that little detail, for how it works with both audiences. For audiences unfamiliar with the Utroms, it's just a cool little design, and/or a Krang homage; for those who know about the utroms from the comics, it's a subtle clue to what's coming, to the identity of the Shredders enemies, and later, Shredder himself.

Ha, I never noticed that.
I remember after watching RTNY Pt. 3 for the first time I thought Shredder was immortal or something, since he picked up his head and said he lived on Earth for hundreds of years.

Ah! There is a portrait of an Utrom on the handle!

Of course, at the time most of us never heard of Ultroms or even seen what they look like. Only us non comics TMNT fans would not know. But none of us would never even think that the Shredder was a Utrom. The creators of the new toon kept that secret well hidden until 'Secret Origins Part III'.

A lot of people actually noticed it back in Episode 6 "Darkness on the Edge of Town". Most just speculated that he stole it from his enemies the Utroms.

That episode was also the first time we saw Saki's infamous bandaged stomach...

Yeah, but I think that the bandage was normal for a guy dressed in a traditional Japanese gown/robe thing. Ever seen Rurouni Kenshin?

Yeah, I know it wasn't abnormal (I think Saki's wrists/forearms were also bandaged) but both clues together in the same episode is signifigant.

A long time ago someone at I think the Technodrome forum pointed out the Utrom found on the sword's handle. However... We all knew Shredder had those "unknown" enemies but even with an Utrom handle on the sword it wasn't much of a hint of what Shredder really was. He could have easily just have been a human who had a conflict with aliens.
