Has anyone heard or seen a new cartoon series Avatar: The Last Airbender? I know I am too old for cartoons, and I really do not watch them. However, I was surfing the TV channels on Saturday, and I could not force myself to change the channel when I stumbled upon Avatar. It has an awesome premise. The writing, animation, coloration, martial art scenes and soundtracks (yes, soundtracks) are all top-notch. Here is the premise:
Avatar: The Last Airbender
降世神通

A long time ago, four nations live in harmony: Water Tribes, Earth Kingdom, Fire Nation, and Air Nomads. Within each nation, there is an order of "benders" who, through the mastery of their heredity talent, can manipulate their native element and bend it to their will. Bending is a combined form of martial art and elemental magic.

In every generation, only a single person is solely capable of bending all four elements. That person is the Avatar. The Avatar is the manifest of the world's spirit and essence. Every 100 years, the Avatar reincarnates into the next nation and begins a new cycle. Starting with the mastery of his or her native element, the Avatar then learns to master each of the other three elements. Throughout the ages, the Avatars have served to keep the four nations--especially the stronger, more aggressive Fire Nation--in check.

Then, one hundred years ago, the Avatar vanished. In absence of an Avatar incarnation, the ruthless Fire Nation started waging a war of conquest on other nations. The Air Nomads were conquered, the Air Temples ravished, and all Airbending monks exterminated. The Water Tribes were raided and driven to the brink of extinction. The Earth Kingdom remains and fights a hopeless war against the Fire Nation. A hundred years have passed since the Avatar mysteriously disappeared, and the Fire Nation is near a final victory. Many believe the Avatar was never reborn into the Air Nomads, and the cycle was broken forever.

In the frozen desolated South Pole, a lone Water tribe struggles to survive. It is here that the village's young and last Waterbender Katara and her warrior brother Sokka rescued a strange 12-year-old boy named Aang who had been suspended in hibernation in a cavernous iceberg. The tribe soon discovered that Aang is not only an Airbender--the elemental race no one had seen in a century--but also the long lost Avatar. Now Katara and Sokka must safeguard the child Avatar in his journey northward to master all four elements, stop the Fire Nation and save the world.
The series is very strangely being aired on Nickelodeon in the US, though it seems to be geared towards audiences much older than the usual Nickelodeon viewers. So far, this one seems to have strong continuity from episode to episode, and the beginning of every episode is marked with "Book X Chapter Y" (i.e., the "X" is "'Water" for this season,) which is very unusual for an episodic cartoon series. I think this series has just started about two months ago, and I have been very impressed so far.

The writing and character development (*gasp!*) are just unusually high for a cartoon series. An example: I was surpised by the multi-dimensional development of the main "bad guy", who was gradually revealed to be honorable but bitter because he had been disgraced and forced into exile, so his objective of capturing the Avatar was largely driven by an obsession to redeem his name. In an episode near the end, he was forced to choose between following the Avatar's trail (which pretty much drove his entire existence) and turning away to rescue his uncle/mentor and only friend, he pondered hard for a while and choose to save his uncle. I think I had never seen that in a cartoon villian before.

I think the series will not last on Nickelodeon, though.

This belongs in Nicktoons, not in anime...

Avatar: The Last Airbender is an Anime. It even has an Asian title: 降世神通

As I've noted, it seems to be geared towards audiences much older than the usual "Nicktoon" viewers.

Avatar is not anime it is anime-inspired. Just because something has a different language in the title does not mean that the show comes from there.

Actually, the characters are Chinese. It is made in US and originally dubbed in American English. Stylistically, it is clearly anime. So, is it anime? I think if Japanese insist that they can make rock 'n roll, rap and hip hop music, then Americans can certainly make anime.

I have read articles on it, and the articles say the series is "Nickelodean's foray into anime and older market" or something like that.

Another reason I avoided the Nicktoon forum is because I am not really interested in having a discussion with KINDERGARDENS and FIRST GRADERS.

Sorry.

By the way, this is the only cartoon I am watching right now. I don't usually watch cartoons.

As I've noted, it seems to be geared towards audiences much older than the usual "Nicktoon" viewers. Uhm, no offense man, but you might want to try a little more research next time. It's a series commisioned by Nickelodeon. Unlike the upcoming Turner co-pros (IGPX and PPGZ), however, it's actually being handled by a Korean-based studio, the ones that made the film Wonderful Days/Sky Blue. Although, apparently, they did try to get Gainax and Ghibli, but they were both too busy.

It's a good show. It's doing well on Nickelodeon, so you don't have to worry about it "not lasting long" on the network. But this is the wrong place to discuss it. You'll find quite a few topics in the Nicktoons forum.

EDIT:

Another reason I avoided the Nicktoon forum is because I am not really interested in having a discussion with KINDERGARDENS and FIRST GRADERS. Well, seeing as you're supposed to be over 13 to even join the forums, you shouldn't have to worry about that. You'll find the same people discussing shows here on the Anime board discussing Avatar on the Nicktoons board.

Well, Nicktoons are for toodlers, kindergardens and grade schoolers. That's why I was surprised when I stumbled across Avatar on Nickelodeon last week while surfing channels. Avatar belongs on Cartoon Network, not Nickelodeon.

It's on Nick, therfore it gets rounded into the NT forum along with the rest. No shows get special treatment here, so the classifying is pretty much straightforward. The Nicktoons forum is called that mianly because that's what makes up the majority of the line-up.

And it won't be changing classifications unless CN picks it up(which I doubt will ever happen)

Right now, the contents are quite "sanitized". I am sorta hoping Avatar will get canned by Nickelodeon and then picked up by Cartoon Network. Then Avatar will be able to have more matura contents.

Avatar belongs on Cartoon Network, not Nickelodeon. Nick Jr. covers the "toodlers" and "kindergardens", actually. And, hate to break it to you, but Avatar (and most of the shows on Cartoon Network) aren't exactly aiming too much higher than grade schoolers, either.

You don't have to be in the target audience to enjoy a show. But that's besides the point - Avatar is not an anime, it's a Nickelodeon show, so we have a better-suited place to discuss it than here.

EDIT: If Nick canned Avatar, that'd be the end of it. Since they made it, it's not up for grabs by other stations - and it definitely wouldn't see a shift in content.

so if Nick cans it, that's it...

What you think doesn't make it right.

Fact - Avatar is on Nickelodeon and that is where it "belongs"

Fact - People of all ages watch Nickelodeon

Fact - Avatar is not an anime (Would a cartoon made in Japan with american influences make it just a regular cartoon? No cause there are tons of animes like that.)

Fact - Just because someone watches anime doesn't mean they are mature, that is obvious

Fact - Avatar is a Nickelodeon show so this belongs on the NickToons board

How so? What proof do you have that this would certainly be the outcome? I agree CN is better than Nick, but you have been tossing guesses and "I think".
