View Full Version : some questions about a fantasy story I'm working on

First off, I hope this is okay to post here. I don't drop by this forum often, and it looks like there's a lot of fanfic-related stuff, so if this belongs somewhere else, feel free to move it. :) Now then . . .

I've had this fantasy story in my head for awhile and have recently completed a (very rough) rough draft. I'm hoping to try to get it published eventually, but I'd like some opinions on a few things about it.

My story is basically a tale about a young man on a quest to rescue a princess, who's been abducted by an evil warlord who needs her in order to carry out a ceremony to resurrect a powerful (and evil) God. The young hero is the Chosen One of an ancient prophecy and sets out to defeat the warlord and (of course) save the world. Also taking part in the adventure are an old ex-warrior who once fought alongside the hero's father, a pair of mercenary-types who join just for the rewards, and a few other individuals they pick up along the way.

Also present, but not playing a large part in the story (at least not in the rough draft), is a legendary group of guardians who protect the land. (The hero's dad was once one of them as well.) These guardians have mystical swords (which may or may not radiate a glow during battle; haven't decided on that yet) that only they can use. Non-guardians cannot properly handle one of the swords. (The guardians may or may not also have some kind of magical powers, such as the ability to move objects, etc. Again, I haven't decided on that yet.)

Obviously, a lot of it sounds similar to STAR WARS. While developing the ideas and writing the rough draft, I continually tried to not make it feel like STAR WARS, but I think it came out like that anyway. I once expressed this concern regarding another story I had written, and I was told that when you're writing fantasy, you're bound to have characters and situations that are similar to STAR WARS no matter how hard you try, because they are just certain aspects of the fantasy genre that you can't really avoid. But still, I'm afraid that someone would read it and say it feels too much like a rip-off. What do you think?

The story also concerns one specific kingdom. But I would imagine that in a world that would also have many other continents there would be more than just this one kingdom. But then that would make one think, "Well, why can't these others kingdoms come to the rescue and help out as well?" Even if I was to have, say, five or six continents in my fantasy world, would it be reasonable to say that only one of these has a powerful kingdom (the one featured in the story) while the others don't?

If some things about the story sound too vague, I apologize. I'm always cautious about posting too many details of my stories on-line. Any suggestions/comments you could offer would be greatly appreciated. :) Thanks.

Your story is the generic "Save the girl" kind of story but I think if you write it it should be pretty good.

So basically, just write the best story I can and not worry if there are similarities to STAR WARS?
