Probably because of all the poker shows that are on cable channels such as ESPN and Bravo. Plus, there are some celebrities that are big poker fans, as well as players (can't think of any off the top of my head right now, I don't have the Sunday paper in front of me.) Plus, there are online websites (such as Worldwinner and Club Pogo) where you can play poker games (e.g.Texas Hold 'em Poker, High Stakes Poker).
In 6th grade, me and and some friends would play poker at break. I guess poker is catching on...

I absolutely loathe conventional card games, Poker being the one at the top. I just don't see the allure to it. It's the most boring game to play, and it's even more boring to watch(even more boring that golf or tennis). Not to mention what the hell is up with all those fat white guys and their horrid taste in fashion?
Also with the surge in poker popularity, it's also caused stupid poker fan-fiction to arise, and a number of poker books flooding the stores, and even more strange card related items like a guide that shows you how to kill someone with a deck of cards(which you can't do BTW).

frankly I do play card games, but I don't play poker.. Like I said, Too easy to figure out.. (If you want a real Challenging game.. Try Cribbage.. after all My Mom and Dad were Cribbage Players, and My dad taught me how to be shrewd when playing the game.. After all what you are doing in cribbage is really a lot harder then what you do in poker.. and sometimes you get a really good cribbage hand, and you still have to sacrifice points so that your opponent doesn't win.. Like I said, cribbage is more fun then poker IMHO and in fact frankly i've learned how to beat a lot of people at this game.. Even my parents and my older sister..
beyond that.. All I can say about Poker is this..

When people move onto the 2nd level of playing poker, it's not so much about the cards in the hand, it's about your ability to bluff and read other players....
really it's the perfect game for trial lawyers. :D

That's why I could never play it. I'm a terrible liar, all though I might accidentally confuse my way to victory once or twice.

In Junior high I used to play it all the time sometimes with my parents but we would only bet quarters. One time I was in the UP and me and four friends played poker and black jack for at least 5 hours.

Poker is awesome. My brother and friends and I would get about $10 worth in pennies and gamble them away. I'm a terribly bluffer, so I caught on to wearing sunglasses while playing, though I still kept losing. But I can tell you to play Poker you have to be incredibly lucky, blod, stupid, or a combination of the three. Which is why I'm naturally bad at it.

Yeah, Poker with youth isn't all that new. In Junior High there was a pot with about a hundred dollars in it. People kept jumping in. After losing a dollar I just let others take my place in the seat. Went outside to play Wallball.

I was once quoted in a newspaper basically ranting against poker, complaining that its not a sport and ESPN should show more Olympic sports like Badminton, Curling, etc. instead of Poker. Poker is just stupid, and it doesn't deserve to be on so many different channels.
You want a good card game, try Mille Bornes. A classic.

1. ESPN's poker Comentators suck and WPT's (Travel Channel) rock
(and the really terrible one they're always shoing on HTS... ugh. Poker's a game, not a sport... They should keep it away from the sport nets.)
2. I hate Mille Bournes

I could never play poker, I would never learn the rules beyond the actual instruction and it always seemed a hassle when the person teaching me how is all "ok IN THS SITUATION you do..." plus I'm not big on gambling.

That's why I could never play it. I'm a terrible liar, all though I might accidentally confuse my way to victory once or twice. Same. I tried to play with some friends once, but I was so happy to get the cards I was dealt, I burst out laughing. Needless to say, all my friends folded. =\

Tennis is boring to watch?Unless Maria Sharapova is playing.
*ducks*
Sorry, I just had to say it. Please don't hate me.
Anyhow, like many, I don't see this as a particularly new phenomenon. I played a healthy amount of poker in Junior High, and even more in High School, and it was hardly an isolated occurence then. This was well before the current Texas Hold 'Em fad, but I never had any difficulty recruiting friends into my poker group. We didn't gamble a lot, which was probably for the better, but we played all the time.
Some folks who think it's a "Thinking man's game", Hate to say this.. it's not..(Just learn to read probability books, and yet I feel that you have learned all you need to know...I disagree. Poker is very much a thinking man's game. Admittedly, it's not strategic in the sense of something like bridge or cribbage, but there's a psychological element to it that can be very challenging. It's a different kind of strategy, perhaps more instictual than cerebral, but still very valid.

Yowza!! Or Kournikova.
Poker seems like a natural progression from YuGiOh, so it's no surprise.
