"Lord of the Rings" Avatar Contest!

There seems to be a pent-up demand for another Avatar Contest, so instead of waiting until the Christmas Contest, we've decided to squeeze in another contest in the meantime.

To celebrate the forthcoming release of The Fellowship of the Ring we're having a "Lord of the Rings" Avatar Contest. So show off your knowledge of and appreciation for the book that keeps showing up in reader polls as "The Book of the Century"!

Now, most of you should know the drill by now, but for the benefit of our recent arrivals, I'll recap:

Find, find or create a Tolkien-related image and put it up as your avatar. It doesn't have to be connected to your username or anything like that -- just something connected to Tolkien or his works. (So, it doesn't have to be a LotR image; it can be from "The Hobbit" or "Farmer Giles" or anything else he wrote.)

Then, to participate in the contest come to this thread and put up a note. If the avatar is obscure, tell us a little about it.

Next Wednesday (the 11th) we'll lock the thread; contest is over. At that point anyone on the boards (whether participating in the contest or not) will get to vote on the avatars they liked the best. To do this, send an email here (tzmovieclub@yahoo.com) listing the three posters in this thread who you think have the best avatars:

* Give the person with the best avatar 3 votes.
* Give the person with the second best 2 votes.
* Give the person with the third best 1 vote.

Voting closes the night of Friday, Dec 13th.

I will then tally up the ballots and on Turkey Day itself announce the winners and the honorable mentions.

NOTE: I will be participating, but since I'm the official score-keeper, I'm going to rule myself ineligible. So don't bother voting for my avatar, folks, it'll just be a wasted vote.

For this to work, you have to leave your avatar UP and UNCHANGED at least until the 13th. Don't change your avatar just because the thread closes; you have to give others a chance to look over your avatar when they go to vote. (In previous contests, I suspect some people lost votes because they changed their avatar too quickly.)

If you have any questions, you can post them to this thread also.

Remember, this contest is entirely voluntary.

So, my avatar is going to be a little obscure: It's a detail from an image meant to represent Manwe, the Valar in Tolkien's mythology who is more or less equivalent to Zeus. Since I can't squeeze the whole image into the avatar, it's kinda hard to make out that it's supposed to be a cloud bank in the shape of an eagle. I hate to have to replace my Hawkgirl avatar, but here's my entry. It's a picture I found online of Gollum by a guy named Jose M. Rodriguez. I had to crop it more than I wanted, so you dont really get ot see the full coolness of the pic.

It'll be in about 2 weeks or so, after Lord of the Rings comes out and the current contest is over. We don't have more than 1 contest at a time.

Well if I remember my history from two years ago correctly, it was spread by rats who were infected with the plague from fleas. The disease was originally from somewhere in the Middle East and was brought to Europe by travelers. I don't know if that's right or not. Feel free to correct me. :)
