View Full Version : Does Adult Swim still need the network rejects?

Adult Swim started out with a good chunk of it's schedule filled with network rejects like Home Movies, Baby Blues, Oblongs, and Mission Hill. And these shows still get cycled through during the last hour of Sunday. I've seen every episode of Oblongs and Mission Hill they've been rerun so much...I never watch the last hour anymore, though I can't think of anything better to replace them with. But, with all the new stuff coming within the next year or so, it's quite possible that they'll be able to better fill that last hour. So, do you think these network rejects will be phased out within the year? And I'm not lumping Futurama and Family Guy in with those other shows for obvious reasons, even though they are in fact, cancelled shows that were picked up from a different network.

Well, Family Guy is getting a whole new season of 13-35 new episodes, so it's all good. Futurama DEFINETLY needs new episodes, Hopefully if FG's revival goes smoothly, Fox will pick Futurama back up also. Yeah, I'd call Home Movies an AS original since it lasted only 6 episodes on UPN, while the extra 46 episodes were produced by Williams Street. Since HM is going to DVD, I doubt it'll still be on 2 years from now. Same goes for Brak, Oblongs, Baby Blues, Mission Hill, and a bunch of others.

I'd like to see Adult Swim run the Clerks cartoon a few times. It's a terrific show that got killed way too soon.
It's got a sense of humor that would appeal to the Swim's audience, and maybe with fan support it could get raised from the dead (wishful thinking)

Some yes, but mostly no. Baby Blues was very funny and I'd never seen it anywhere before. Never saw Oblongs or Mission Hill before, both managed to make my skin crawl, :p not an easy trick. If I've seen it before, like Futurama, though very funny, I most likely wouldn't bother taping it.

I agree. I think once the license to those three run out, they should just let those shows go and make room for some AS originals to repeat (SG, Brak, TGTTM, etc.) Plus, they will need that extra room for their upcoming shows (American Dad, 12 Oz. Mouse, Stroker and Hoop, Boondocks, etc.) I say let the former WB shows go for now, and if they wanted to bring them back a year or more later to Adult Swim. Oblongs is already coming to DVD, so I wouldn't be surprised if the other two shows did (I mean they both only have one season.) Who knows, maybe with 5 years we'll whitness an Adult Swim spin-off network and shows like Oblongs, Baby Blues, and Mission Hill can live on there for awhile.
As for Home Movies, let it have a spot there for awhile, it's a nice fit to end the regular AS Sunday block before repeats and classic cartoons.

Clerks was on Comedy Central for a little while, they may have the rights tied up still.

True they do have the rights. I wish CN had it though. And Dilbert for that matter. And Undergrads!
I enjoy those network rejects well enough but I think they could better use 1AM. Space Ghost and Brak deserve to air. They're hillarious still.

Clerks, Undergrads, and Clone High. The perfect network reject combo.

Home Movies wasn't rejected by Cartoon Network, it just ran its course.

There's really not many other network rejects to pick up, as the primetime animation boom sorta calmed down in the early 2000s. Besides, many of the shows listed (Clerks, Undergrads, Dilbert) are already on another network, hence the rights issues.

maybe they will always need them for filler has AS ever ran any of its originals wether premiere or rerun in the 1 - 2 am hour? they might not want to so the rejects are needed?

The ultimate solution to "network reject-itis" is for Williams Street to produce more of its own comedy shows. They are attempting to come up with successful concepts, as witness the various pilots they are trying out. (^_*)

UPN produced 5 episodes and Cartoon Network produced 47. And you're still lumping Home Movies in? That's retarded.

I'm not using a scientific classification. I would have lumped in Futurama and Family Guy as well, but it would have been pointless as they both get killer ratings and aren't going anywhere anyttime soon. Home Movies may have gotten new episodes(I didn't know how many were made for UPN and how many were made for Adult Swim wuntil you told me, and to be honest, I really didn't care), but that really doesn't matter. It's done. There's no more new episodes, it's in the same boat as Oblongs and Mission Hill, being forced to be shuffled around in the 1-2 am timeslot. I really don't think William's Street considers it an Adult Swim original. As they don't seem to treat the show as one. Besides, if were going to get technical about episode numbers, how many episodes of Oblongs and Mission Hill did the WB air? Oh, and if you're going to treat Home Movies as an Adult Swim original just because they ordered new episodes then you'd have to consider Big O an Adult Swim original as well.
edit:Oh wait, they did advertise Big O as "An Adult Swim action original!" Fine, you win.

I'd say Big O is an Adult Swim original since the commercial spouts, "An Adult Swim Action Original" and all.
