This looks to be real. If not, this is the most well done and elaborate April Fools hoax I've ever seen. I'll wait till i'm more positive before actually claiming it "news" tho >_>
Edit by Karl - It's official. It's a Toei/CN co-pro, read the thread for more info on it.

That's looks cool. Do you think CN will sue or encourage it? I think this will encourage other shows to be "anime-nized". *CoughBleedmanCough*

It's likely true, from what I can tell. The Tokyo International Animation Festival is this weekend, it runs 3-31 through 4-03

Or they may just be fancy hoaxes.

I'm going with doujinishi.

Yeah, there's a good chnage this is a doujin, Powerpuff Girls is pretty big in Japan. Then again, if it's real, then I'd imagine Cartoon Network would have lisenced and/or funded this.

It's been rumoured for the past year or so... I can't remember which one, but a certain newspaper showed some pictures that looked very similar to this. Although, that was only a rumour at the time... This could turn out very interesting. I can't wait to see Mojo Jojo in anime form. On the poster he looks hilarious! :anime:

This may not be fake. If we've gotten a Mario, an ninja turtles anime, then yes, it's possible.
EDIT: It's real. It mentions the it's in production, and has an unknown airdate.
Avex seems to be overlooking production. If anyone has knowledge to the creator...please contact him about this.
BTw, this is more probable as this when aired on TVTokyo and CartoonNetwork of Japan aired, it was very very popular.

While I'm skeptical whether this is true or not, I can say that the person who designed the pictures definitely did a good job giving the PPG an anime feel.

Since I don't think they allow doujin-ka into the Tokyo Anime Fair, I'm hinging on this atleast being a pitch. Could even be 2nd of the 3 CN-Co-pros. Granted, I'm biased because I'd love for it to be real. It combines my cute anime obession with my affinity for the Powerpuff Girls. Therefore, how can I not wish that it was real?

PPG was sorta like Astroboy in it's designs, (Let's say for hte heck of argument, 1960's anime)
This looks like somthing from the 1970's as far as anime is concerned (I would say like Megazinger Z or Magical Emi)
Incidently, what the heck does that title translate into? 'cause all I get via the bablefish is "The witch returns!" and the remaning text. (Which may just be "Power Puff Girls Z" but I just want to make sure)

Interesting. Looks like the Co-Pros are starting to come out. I must say I like the art style so far. Looks like they'll be going for a semi-parody style of Sailor Moon. I thought IGPX was #1. I love the designs other than the Proffessor... He reminds me far too much of Doctor Tsukumo from Wandaba Style. Far... too... much.
I guess that makes one new anime for Toonami, one new anime for the budding girls block on Sunday (later for Miguzi) and then one more after that... Which will probably also be on Toonami or on the off chance... Adult Swim.
But why call it PPGZ? That's just begging to say it's a joke.
I must say it looks pretty cool. I like all the designs cept for the Professor, just doesn't seem right for his type of character.

they were anime-ized in a few fan comics, most notably the bleedman doujinshi: http://bleedman.snafu-comics.com but this is the first official anime-style repurposing of the girls.
I wonder how Craig feels about this. I'd imagine that he wasn't in a position to micro manage this series this time around (even seasons 5 & 6 were heavily influenced by Craig according to himself,) so I'd imagine it's gotta be interesting for him to let go and let someone else have at it.

I don't think it'll be that good, if only because of the obviously stereotypical shojou and shonen concepts. I mean, they put a freaking Z at the end of Powerpuff Girls. And the three of them all have typical magical girl weapons straight out of older little girl shows. How transparent can you get?
If it wasn't real, this would be the most stereotyped parody of Powerpuff Girls made into anime ever. As it stands, it's a sad, sad piece of work, that'll probably have the typical horrid pacing and writing usually accompanying children's anime. As well as lots of OMG KAWAII!!! moments involving spastic facial expressions.
Not to say that if you like the concept, you're some kind of tasteless moron. As I always say, hate the show, not the viewer.

This is the crap people want? The picture looks great if the series was some drop-in-the-hat anime show, but the Powerpuff Girls were one of the first shows to bring rebirth to the thick black line and graphic sensibilities back into animation. Since then series like "Fairly Oddparents," or "Brandy and Mr. Whiskers," among others, have totally swiped the style. Keep the Powerpuff Girls the way they should be. The series didn't get as big as it did because they conformed their design aesthetics to an established genre!

Even if I liked FMA I'd still say it. PPG and FMA are completely different archtypes. Just because someone thinks the writing in FMA is good, doesn't mean his writing will be any good in a shojo comedy series. It's like getting the writers of Barney to write Battle Royal 2 or something.

YoYos were originally weapons. (http://www.coolquiz.com/trivia/explain/docs/yoyo.asp)
Meanwhile, in addition to Toei and Talent from Doremi and FMA, the character designer is the same person who worked on Ultramaniac's designs, explaining the stereotypically cute style.
Seriously though, it almost definitely won't be innovative, but if they've got a good director, good writers and some good storyboarders, damned if it won't be very, very fun, and sometimes that's all you need.

It recently occured to me that CN might not have wanted to announce this yet and that Toei might have jumped the gun talking about it. The thought that this might have been a jump-the-gun moment is reinforced that CN did a press release for IGPX yesterday, but not for PPGZ. As such, I've talked it over with some of the other mods, and we basically agree that this thread will be closed until we can get some info out of CN about the series, or they give us a press release.
However, the fact that we're doing this means that it's a real project, just not something I'm sure we're comfortably at liberty to talk about.

After some serious thought and such on the part of the mods, this thread is back open for discussion. Meanwhile, here is the additional collected data from various translated sources so far:
-The Screencaps that have been posted so far are from a pilot that was being screened at TAF, not just a promo. So they've already got some of the show in the can.
-Kakudou Hiroyuki (Digimon, Hellsing, Zatch Bell, Magic Users Club, Transformers: Galaxy Force) is directing.
"A mysterious iceberg appears in Townsville. A boy scientist, Kitazawa Ken, goes out at the request of the mayor.
...
'Leave it to me, Mr. Mayor! Chemical X!!' he says, and fires the Chemical X Beam.
This is the scientist. The Z daughters are strangers, so it seems more accurate to think of him as Dexter after all.

The iceberg is detroyed, but from inside it a black shining jewel and a white shining jewel emerge. The black jewel makes a bunch of animals turn into monsters. This is also how Mojo Jojo is created."
Gotta go to class so I've gotta hurry this along a little. The white jewel calls three girls in town. The guy says the narrator sounds like the Dragon Ball Z narrator.

It also reveals their transformation phrases:
"Hyper Blossom," "Rolling Bubbles," and "Powered Buttercup."
Basically, we are looking at a ground up re-invention of the property like nothing we've seen before. However, the screencaps suggest that the basic emotion of our lead heroines is the same. The setup is just very, very different in a lot of ways. No official word on debut date, but I'd imagine given the talent lined up for the project right now, they'd want to have it sooner rather than later.

I'm not sure whether we're in sarcasm-land or not, but I should also note his job on Hellsing was storyboarding, which is a good sign because Hellsing's boarding was great, so he'll know when his boarder(s) are doing their job right or not, especially on the action poses. I think we are in for one heck of a show, even if it is as a complete reinvention of the series.

And really, it's just got so much talent going into it. I mean we've got great execs, great producers, a great kids' anime director and the perfect character designer for the property (I mean Ultramaniac and Gravitation TV? That's got the shoujo aspect covered so well it's crazy.) In fact, I'm inclined to say that the only bad thing that'll come out of this revision will be a flood of fowl PPGZ loli-doujin, and even that will probably be weighted against some very neat, very clean parody and story doujin. That and we might end up with Man-Bubbles. However, every mahou shoujo anime runs that risk. ;)
I went through a lot of different feelings for this. First denial, then shock, then more confusion, then curious acceptness and eagerness. Judging from the screenshots and videos I'd say this is definitely shoujo material. From the transformation scenes, to the Chemical X 'monsters' (weekly? hopefully not but I'm not holding my breath), to the poses. Which is just fine with me because I'm a sucker for campy shoujo shows. Hell, I subject myself to Pretty Cure, Mermaid Melody, Tokyo Mew Mew for reasons even I will never understand. But for non-shoujo lovers maybe I'm wrong and the English version of this will take a different route. I hope the animation is slightly better than the pilot, not that it was bad, just that it has more potential.

After seeing one of the video clips I have some initial thoughts:
-I love the overall "look" of the show, it's got that nifty retro-on-purpose design that I'm digging.
-Seeing the girls using weapons in action REALLY threw me off. I hope we will eventually have a return to form of the girls flying around as colorful streaks pummelling monsters with their fists.
-Mojo doens't look as cool as he did in the promo poster.
-it seems as if Chemical X will be even more Deus-ex-machina-ish than it was toward the end of the US run.
-I wanna see the mayor!
EDIT: the concept of an anime-ized (by the designer of Tv Gravitation even *thanks Karl*) "Him" is a VERY frightening mental image.

Ah, someone finally got a translation up. Meanwhile the character design also worked on Sailor Moon and Cutey Honey F? It's like they got the most suitable people for the purpose for every last job. This is ridiculously well staffed so far. I kinda wish that page had the whole bit translated, but it seems to get the jist of it across, which is that it's very different from the US stuff, very similar to Japanese stuff, but probably well put together pretty much either way.

Hmmm, since its a CN co-production, I can't see them changing much in dubbing, except the names, which they might just leave to make it more japanese or something. But I wonder if they'll call the girls by B-names in both forms in the dub, since it seems like they have a seaprate identity in this. They're not even made by the Prof by accident, they were normal girls accidentally given powers.

I think the point is this. The original PPG has been declining in popularity for a while now, not to mention in quality. I haven't seen any "recent" recent episodes, but I have seen latter seasons when new directors and new animators took over...and they were absolutely abysmal compared to the original seasons. Even if the show were to suddenly become good again, the show probably wouldn't be as popular as it was before.
So this is the perfect time to give PPG a complete overhaul and see how things play out because of it. PPG is a perfect show for that because it's had popularity in Japan and America and thus seeing how the Japanese can handle such a beloved property will make for an interesting experiment.

If it helps reverse the slide in the original PPG's popularity since the movie bombed, all to the good. If it helps CN and other American outlets to be more receptive to shoujo anime, all to the good. If it tanks--well, it'll be far from the first remake to do that. At least, CN doesn't seem to be shorting on the talent and money, like it has with other of its remakes (classic example, "Fuzors").
At least give it a chance before we see if it's another "Duck Dodgers" or another "Transformers Armada".

First, I think the VAs for Blossom, Bubbles, Buttercup, and Mojo Jojo will reprise thier roles in PPGZ from the Japanese dub of PPG. Son Goku of the Dragonball shows had the same VA for the entire run. The Mayor and the Professor are likely to be voiced by someone else other than the Japanese VA for Mayor of Townsville and Professor Utonium. From what I can tell, this story is a rewritten story in that PPG and PPGZ don't take place in the same continuity like Tenchi Muyo, Tenchi Universe, and Tenchi in Tokyo or MS Gundam, Gundam Wing and G Gundam. From the storyline, it seems that the raygun is powered by Chemical X, and it infused the iceberg accidently with Chemical X which explodes and creates not only the Monsters of the Week and Mojo Jojo from normal animals, but also hits three human bystandards who become the Powerpuff Girls. The base elements of the PPG origin are set up. Because of an accident with Chemical X caused by the Professor in the City of Towsville, the Powerpuff Girls and Mojo Jojo are created, and we got to see the Mayor also.

Sam Register is an executive producer on it. Therefore, it must be being made for export to America sooner rather than later. Basically, HHPAY has proven you can be very Japanese and very anime and still do very well. PPGZ is the logical evolution from that point. No one knows at this point whether it'll hit America or Japan first (though they'd be wise to simultaneously premiere if possible as a means of undercutting the possibility of fansubbing. Interesting. They can fly.
Oh mah gosh! And give the consumer what they want? Don't be ridiculous.Well, that's me, the Ridiculous Toonmaster.
Actually, now thinking about this, it is a very plausible idea. After Samurai Jack is done, Cartoon Network's going to be looking for another DVD cash cow. Even better, they could pair up The Powerpuffs' first season with the Samurai's last. That'd be sure to garner revenue for WHV. But, then, theyd have to push the release up to April, so as to match with the show's premiere... or to beat it by a few days.
And, on the set, they could supply the first episode of PPGZ as an extra (or the pilot). In... DA DAH DUM... English and Japanese!
But, for fun, they could supply the audio track for the thirteen episodes in English, Spanish, French, and Japanese.

Hello, friends from Toon Zone, Yesterdaylanders, Memory Laners and HB-fans from the whole world (and a special hello to Joseph & Jayne Barbera, Iwao Takamoto, Craig McCracken, Genndy Tartakovsky and all that people from Hanna-Barbera/Cartoon Network)!
I've read an article similar to this one on the Brazilian Herói magazine site (http://www.heroi.com.br (http://www.heroi.com.br/)). And this is the result of an union among Toei Animation, Aniplex and Cartoon Network, which produced the anime series.
This series still doesn't have the scheduled premičre date on Cartoon Network to the world-wide audiences. Let's wait until the things go on.
Well, that's it!

Wow, I'm pretty late chiming in on this subject but I've been following it and collecting images since I first heard about it. I'm with the "cool beans" side. I'm withholding judgment on the story until I see it, but the character designs for the girls are quite fresh and cute to me. So far it looks every bit as good IMHO as the Bleedman art and I'm looking forward to asking my in-laws in Japan to video tape the episodes (for my daughters of course  )
On a side note I love it whenever a girl uses a yo-yo as a weapon. I was a big fan of the live action Sukeban Deka reruns when I lived in Japan. Ben Dunn did a nice parody of the Sukeban girls many years ago in his Ninja High School comic (Hitomi and her Girl Commandos).
I remember reading before that the yo-yo really did start out as a weapon in the Phillipines, though of course back then it was a rock on a rope and dropped by hunters from trees. But I digress....
The only thing I don't like so far about PPGZ is the Professor growing small while the Mayor has grown big. Can't wait to see the anime version of Miss Bellum (sp?).

What if BUNNY shows up?If she does, I think it would be very unwise to repeat her story in the original PPG series. Rather, I think it would be better to use "Bunny" as that type of Johnny-Come-Lately character that often show up in anime involving battling teams. Usually, when they come on the scene well into the series, they are antisocial loners at best, and initially villains at the worst. However, as the series progresses toward the end, they eventually end up being grafted seamlessly into the team, or at least become solid allies. Plenty of examples:
"Digimon" was absolutely swarming with this character type, with at least one every season: Kari Kamiya and Gatomon of 01, Ken Ichjouji of 02, Impmon and Ryo Akiyama of 03, and Kouichi Kimura of 04 (even Kouichi's brother Koji had a bit of the loner aspect at the beginning, and the Monster Makers of 03 even had their own example of this archtype-Shibumi Mizuno). You have Anubis of "Ronin Warriors", Pixie/Granity of "Monster Rancher", Optimus Magnus in "Transformers R.I.D.", Knuckles and Rouge the Bat in "Sonic X", the outer plant sailor scouts of the later seasons of "Sailor Moon", and Ohara (Angel Salvia) Scarlet of "Wedding Peach". Occasionally, you have one of these latecomers that break the mold a bit: Miss Lune was your classic keep-her-out-of-the-loop-to-keep-our-hero-identities-secret ordinary supporting player in "Moncolle Knights", until she actually lived up to her monster card in the climatic ending episodes; and Binka didn't even exist until a change in the timestream of "Shinzo" reversed the annihilation of the human race. Even the live-action Power Rangers had that archtype with the "Green Ranger" character.
At any rate, if PPGZ uses Bunny, I think they should make her this type of mid-storyline wild-card character.
Maybe even have the Japanese langauge track on the SAP just to further retard that possibility.)Any chance that they'll use the PPG theme by Shonen Knife, I wonder?
Him needs to be a bishonen. Ace from the Gangreen Gang needs to look like he's out of one of those high school punk mangas. Princess just needs to look like the usual anime snooty girl, though if her technological powers included a GitS-style active camo, that'd be an awesome reference.

I wonder if they'll have toy-like weapons too. And i wonder if Sedusa, Amoeba Boys, Fuzzy Lumpkins, and the Gang Green Gang will appear in PPGZ?I imagine much of the fun of the series will be seeing what the approach will be for each member of the PPG rogues gallery. If the creators are smart, they'll be parodies and in-references about every anime in sight.

Forgive my ignorance, but who is Bunny? Bunny was a fourth Powerpuff Girl created by the original three when they decided they wanted a new sister. Unable to find sugar, spice, and everything nice, however, the girls substituted them with their own ingredients. When they added Chemical X, the result was a big girl with a purple dress, a hunch, crooked teeth, and a limited vocabulary. Not long after she was created, the girls shooed her off because she only got in the way. Later, however, Bunny saved the girls' lives, but exploded soon afterward because she was too unstable.

Thanks for reminding me that ADV needs to stop sitting on the rights. Probably the only way they'll release Mazinger Z is if Gatchaman's a success though. One time, they released "Gatchaman" on DVD in all of its versions, giving the viewer the choice between the subbed original and the "Battle of the Planets" and "G Force" versions. I believe that's exactly what should be done with "Mazinger Z". Show the subbed versions of original "Mazinger Z", "Great Mazinger" and "Grendizer" seasons, while offering the viewer the choice of seeing the "Tranzor Z" version of the "Mazinger Z" and "Great Mazinger" episodes, as well as offering the dubbed alternatives to "Grendizer" in "Grandizer" of the "Force Five" series in the U.S., and in Dynamic Vision's "Goldorak" from French Canada (there are fans there who insist that version is superior to the "Grendizer" Japanese original!). "Goldorak" could offer the option of an English sub.
Well, that's the advantage of DVD. If the format offers that kind of possibilities, why not exploit them to the full?

JUST found this on google; a website that appears to be nothing but the main promo poster as a background, with what sounds to be the theme song, in english, sung by Puffy AmiYumi.
Now I'm an old avid Puffy fanatic going back to '98, and I've never heared this song before, and I'd think I'd know my favorite jpop group if I heared them. Still, it might be a song off the PPG cd, and I might not of heared it.
Did they do a song for the cd?
If not, could this be a leaked mp3?
The song talks of "fighting evil, over the city, over the mountains, over the sky, over the rainbow".
It cuts off at the end.

Ello, long time watcher of the Whoopass Girls here. And a long time watcher of anime since Sabatian(think boy and his white dog) and Maya The Bee(think cute Shoujo Bees). I`m also an artist and connoisseur of good anime style. This is some of the best scitck produced by network folks in sum time. It`s typical that TV anime`s look can fall on the bland and boring side(Pokemon, Medabots and D.I.C.E) but there have been cases where the production has been mind altering for a long running TV series(Naruto, Kenshin,FMA Digimon Tamers). This new life being brought to PPG is on the latter catagory.
What I see as a lover of this genre is brilliant coloring, exceling posing and most of all eye catching designs. If they would have introduced the carbon copy of the original than who would want to watch something thats grown stale in the last few years? The movie hurt the franchise, it REALLY hurt it. The series has had what, eight episodes in the last four years? And those episodes themselves have been cruel in the face of the orginal, unforgetable episodes.
If Bruce Timm and Tim Burton hadn`t recreated Batman in the late 80s and early 90s I highly admire the idea that The Dark Knight mgiht be as well known(or in this case respected seriously) as The Moon Knight. Ok wait thats slandering the White Knight. What I mean to say is that when something is broken, fix it. Sure I know what some might be thinking "But it wasn`t broke!".
If it wasn`t broke than they wouldn`t have needed a revamp.
The series had 26 episodes in the last 4 years, and the movie would have been fine if it had been marketted better by AOL/TW. They dropped the ball by having it be a matinee only movie, which basically killed it's ability to tap 1/2 of it's audience: 18-34 year olds. I'll agree that the TV episodes that followed were weak, but the blame for the general bungling of the franchise is really the fault of the AOL/TW who didn't pay attention to the demographic data CN was getting for PPG.
Meanwhile, I agree this is a necessary revamp, but it's only because of some gross mismanagement followed by a meek 5th and 6th season, followed by the most useless marketing idea ever: the powerpuff girls teens. Pull anyone of those out of the equation, and the property would be in better shape today than it is now. Hopefully, the nice and animation and design actually follow through with story. If it's closer to Teen Titans than HiHiPuffyAmiYumi, it might work very well. Otherwise, we are looking at the nail in the coffin, not the fountain of youth.

Finally seen the clips and they really look good. Can't wait to see the finished product.:D Half the fun of seeing a new version of an old favorite is seeing how they handle the old stuff and pondering what new stuff they bring to it.
It's nice to see Buttercup at what she does best.
I only saw one copy of Tranzor Z on VHS a long time ago. Isn't there any more?I rented that from Blockbuster once, but that was a couple of years ago. You could always try some used book/video sites, old video stores or swapmeets.
I really hope they bring back BiS to do the intro/outros... even the chances are low. I hope they keep Puffy Ami Yumi far away from this though.

I bet they're also sitting on the rights of the original Cutey Honey TV series
I doubt it. Fansubbers are already up to episode 8, and they haven't heard anything. Supposly, there was a rumor FLASH was licensed, but it's still not confirmed.

It's possible to bring them back together again for this one show.
It's not very likely, but it is possible.

To all those who said the POWERPUFF GIRLS' new look is much better
than the old, I strongly disagree! As a fan of the original series,I have
found their original puffy looks to be adorable from the start! They're
called PowerPUFF Girls for a reason! They looked cute and PUFFY!
The New Powerpuff Girls don't look puffy,so why they do they have
the word "puff" in the title?Instead, they look like another tiresome
SAILOR MOON wanabees. They're don't look iconic like the original did!
I,too, agree that the original series lost steam after the movie tanked
and Craig McCracken left the series! The reason I'm not impressed with
this new take is because:
1.)It's not the same or fresh like the original innovative series ever was!
2.)This new version is just trying to capitolize on the huge success of
Anime! Let the show die in peace already! They're not that popular
anymore!

First: we're allowed to have an opinion about the matter and so do you
Second: you can't compare PPG to SM because they're two different stories. I wouldn't consider PPG to be a magical girl series, anyway.

Depends on whether Puffy would be available to work on it too. They are in the middle of a stateside tour, so unless they stuffed them into a studio before it kicked off, I think they'd have to get another band signed on. There are only a few million J-Pop acts that'd do a listenable job of it (Angela, Hikaru Utada, TMRevolution, Yoko Ishida, etc) let alone if they started tapping J-Rock like The Pillows (though they'd actually probably be a bad choise for the Japanese audience, though the US would eat it up) or Beat Crusaders or Meister or L'Arc En Ciel (and given FMA's success on CN, I could see Register getting Arc lined up.) Shoot, lets not even get into the possibility of CN ringing up someone who did work on the Heroes and Villians disc. Cornielus (he's gotten a lot more pop lately,) Apples in Stereo, Devo, Frank Black (heck, get the Pixies to do it straight up,) Komeda or The Sugarplastic could turn up and do something in the way of an OP.
However, if Sam was able to get Puffy into a studio and the Japanese side of the production was behind it, well, I'd expect Ami and Yumi to be singing something about fighting crime and chemical x.
L'Arc En Ciel (and given FMA's success on CN, I could see Register getting Arc lined up.)For the love of God, please no.

Well, they could always pull a Gunslinger Girl/SpeedGrapher and just licence some existing piece of music. I just can't think of anything that strike me as existing that'd be very PPGZ as well. I'm leaning on it having to be atleast a remix of the original theme, and probably something from scratch.
What about Shonen Knife?
They just came off a US tour, so I'm not sure whether they have time/energy to do it in a reasonable time frame. I'd bet that there is either already an OP/ED in the can, or if not, there will be one very, very shortly (which is part of why I think Puffy is a bit of a long shot unless they did it while they were in the studio doing the work on that Tsunami benefit. That I could see.)

Ok, here we go..
Anybody else know about this?
I know I can't post the URL here, but if you google "Powerpuff Girls Z", it's the sixth URL down.
Not PuffyAmiYumi. Its Shonen Knife. It's from an old PPG music video that used to air on CN a few years back
Nope, that's Shonen Knife, and it's a song off the Heroes and Villians Powerpuff Girls album. Though it'd be darn fitting to use that piece of music for the new series, I'd bet that they'll have new OP and ED music cut in Japan, if only to launch/maintain/relaunch some J-pop artist's career (hence why my april fools try was done all supereurobeat style - it's just the kind of thing that'd happen.) I think it's funny that someones already done a YTMND* for it though.
*=you're the man now dog. a goofy internet site.I've already suggested ( http://forums.toonzone.net/showpost.php?p=1698245&postcount=182 ) that they use the Shonen Knife theme for the show. If they don't, it should be used in the show somewhere.

You see, I think people are missing the point here..
The cliche "Transformation Sequince", "Magical Girl Weapons", etc., are a part of the "joke" of redoing the PPG as an anime.
It's an "injoke", a "parody", much like putting the "Z" on the end-
There have been a gazillion anime shows that have put an "Z", or a "Zeta" in or at the end of their titles.
So all of this is just a part of the producers poking fun at anime cliche's and such.
I can see this going the way of an all-ages Excel Saga-type thing.
Even if it does'nt, and is more of a straight-forward magical girl show, does not invalidate the inherent parody aspect.
And for the record, I really like the animation I've seen, and I LOVE the character designs.
By the way, thanks for clarifying the song issue for me- I could have sworn that was Puffy; I have a friend who used to be a big Shonen Knife fan, and would play their stuff all of the time, and I just did'nt care for them. Huh.
I'm not as fimiliar with Jpop groups as I used to be, but what about either ShakkaLabbits, The Scanty, or Brand New Little Toys doing the theme?

BTW, where did this whole "Z" thing in anime titles originate? What's the meaning of it?IIRC it's the idea that since "Z" is the last letter in the alphabet, by adding that to the end of a title it should add a sense of finality or "the end is comming soon". Of course, that backfired in a major way with Dragonball.:anime:
BTW, where did this whole "Z" thing in anime titles originate? What's the meaning of it?Stuff with "Z" in the title automatically sounds hipper and cooler. Same reason we had that "X" stuff from the mid-90's.

For Mazinger Z, the giant mecha was made from an alloy called 'Alloy Z' if I remeber correctly. And in the case of DBZ, Z was suppose to be a final series.

I know nobody is going to agree with me,but something has to be

i wouldn't mind seeing some Disney style (which varies) being used for cartoons.
its gonna be creepy if i have to look at one style of drawing for various cartoons with little or no change.
i posted somewhere on here. i'm just not as excited as everyone else. i love PPG, and falling over it now because its 'anime style'. just seems so typical.
its not like i'm going to NOT give it a chance, its the hype thats depressing me. even i draw what would be considered "anime/manga"
i don't think i have a style.

i like PPGs design and never get tired of it. the girls are not Human in a sense of being born as one or having the physical apperence.
i like fan art, and don't have a problem when people add fingers and toes, its cute and they want the girls more human like.
the movie was released at a bad time. even Ebert gave it a bad review because it was considered 'too violent' with the girls pretty much destroying buildings. it was also going up against huge sequels. so a toon release at any time was just bad.
the episodes are few because the voices actors have a life! and other voicing projects to do! they can't be constantly called in.

I had heard before that DBZ was given the Z not just to say "final". Japanese regard Z as meaning something like "greatness" or something that is at its peak performance. It is a little like the way some people over here use the word or symbol for "omega" to mean the same thing (besides just sounding cool).
The Japanese also use "W" in titles of games, manga and anime to mean "double" or "twins". Though the only example I can pull off the top of my head is the Saturn game Roommate W ~futari~. I know there are more.

I think "Z"(And X, R, and S) is a cool letter to use in anime titles. ;)Reminds me of a 30-year-old Exxon radio commercial - so old it was then called Enco. The commercial capitalized on the tag-line "When your fuel gauge points toward E, choose Enco." One of the participants pointed out that on some non-American cars the symbol for Empty is instead something like "O, R or X." So the suggested tag-line for the "international" edition was "When your fuel gauge points toward ORX, choose Enco." The commercial ended with the response "ORX?" :)
