Damn, I'm such a poet I scare myself! Seriously though, I'm taking this time to reflect on the past of videogames (as if there is a BETTER topic). Sometimes, we get so caught up on the new that we forget the old. This topic was inspired by the late, great system, SEGA SATURN. I bought one last week for $40, even though some people say $40 is too much. Anyway, as I played Virtua Fighter 2 and Sonic R I wondered, "How did this system die so fast?" In some ways, it is better than the Playstation! i think it has better sound and better 2D graphics, plus, with enhancements like the 4MEG RAM cartridge, the system gets even more power, enabling you to play games like X-Men vs. Street Fighter in arcade-perfect fashion. The Playstation can't do that without making a special mode where you have to choose the same characters to be able to tag. SEGA SATURN has some of the best music I've ever heard on videogames. Play Sonic R and you'll know what I mean. And when you're done playing the game, you can enjoy the music in your CD player. Granted, SOME Playstation games could do that, but not all of them. And the Controller layout is the best ever made. It's perfect for fighting fanatics like me and people who want their buttons in the same general area.
Great System. Large game library of fun games. User-friendly controls. All that good stuff. And when it all comes down to it, do you really care what a game looks like, as long as it's really fun? That last sentence is not to be interpreted as saying the SATURN's games are ugly. When you play your GCN's and XBoxes and PS2's, remember that they had to grow from a little guy to a man, so to speak. I can't trace the history of VG's all the way back to the first system, but I know that you better be happy there were systems like Colecovision, Atari, NES and the like.

That's the exact same thing I'm pondering. Great systems that die so prematurely. It's a shame really. I heard that the Dreamcast died because of lack of third party support or something like that. I don't know about all that, but I do know that piracy is partly, if not totally, to blame. It's too easy for people to get their hands on illegal copies of games at cheaper prices over the internet. I'll confess, I bought a couple of them myself. But it takes more than one man to break a company worth miillions of dollars. I think that's why Nintendo decided to make their game discs so small. No other game system will be able to emulate them. Smart move, Nintendo!

well..ppl can bootleg GCN games eventually...just gotta crack the code..it's the availibility of mini-discs (aren't that easy to find in stores)...

as for why dreamcast died..dunno..but I know it has more games than N64, and I'd say 60% of those games were great ones...I own 12 DC games and I'm not disappointed in one of em'..I need to go out and get some more before they disappear.. :D

Tis' a shame DC went down...even Nintendo fanboys are sad Sega isn't making anymore consoles....

Nintendo & Sega-Had the BEST games and mascots (Mario and Sonic)

XBOX & Sony-Well...for the "mature" kids.....but they will never win me over..I like my 'kiddy' games.. :)

I think the reason that Saturn died so quickly is because of poor timing. They put out the Saturn around the same time as the 32X for Genesis, making it so that they put out two systems at once. Sega just needed to either not release 32X, or hold off a little longer on Saturn.

And speaking of dead systems, remember the 3DO? That system was soooooo expensive, and lasted for about half a year.

That's true about about not releaseing the 32X. It was a waste of time and money. Both, the saturn and the 32X were 32 bits, right? That's like releasing 2 of the same system at the same time. I'd swear SEGA had chimps working for them.

i agree, as for dreamcast, every one came out with a new system just as it was reaching its peak and every one wanted the "better" system.

As for the Dreamcast, it died simply because it couldn't get the interest of gamers or developers... everyone was waiting for the PS2, which they thought would be the equivalent of the second coming.

Yeah, the Dreamcast was a good little system with some great games.
