View Full Version : Toonheads (10/2/01): #38 Tasmanian Devil & #40 Before Bedrock

Here's what aired on Toonheads last night:
Tasmanian Devil:
"Devil May Hare" (WB)
"Ducking the Devil" (WB)
"Dr. Devil and Mr. Hare" (WB)
Before Bedrock:
"Daffy Duck and the Dinosaur" (WB)
"The First Bad Man" (MGM)
"Wild, Wild World" (WB)
Despite all the clips of the b&w print of "Prehistoric Porky" and "Gertie the Dinosaur" in the commericals for Before Bedrock, neither of these two titles aired on the actual episode.

Did anyone else notice the clip of Bosko from "Sinkin' in the Bathtub" in the commercial for The Early Works of Friz Freleng show next week? I doubt they'll actually show a Bosko cartoon, though. Most of the commercial seemed to be footage from "Mr. and Mrs. Is the Name".

Are you sure? Bosko shows up in the Toon Heads opening sequence, but I din't see him in the ad for the next episode. I'll hafta check my tape.

BTW, I think the dissapointing part about Tazmanian Devil, is that I was hoping Bushy Hare would air. After all, the "Nature Boy" that chases Bugs was a Taz-prototype! And another comment I have is: "Was there ANYTHING that Eddie Selzer DID like?!"

Yes, $$$$, like all WB executives!
I have to admit, I was a bit disappointed in last nights episodes.
First, I've never been all that fond of Taz!
I can't for the life of me figure out why he's become so popular in the last few years.
The Devil cartoons have always got a lot of airplay and usually been seen uncut.
As for the prehistoric episode, it was great to see Avery's First Bad Man (uncut?) but why did they show only that clip of Prehistoric Porky? After all these years of watching the edited, redrawn version, I was really hoping to see the original B/W cartoon.
And DD and the Dinosaur/Wild Wild World? Just plain boring...

I'd guess "Daffy Duck and the Dinosaur" showed up because it was Jones' first directorial job with Daffy (and his first attempt at a `non-cutsey' Merrie Melodie), while "Wild Wild World" probbly owes its appaeance to the fact that Leonard Maltin pointed out in his book that the gags predated the similar ones that would show up in "The Flintstones" a year later (since Warren Foster had just left WB to become the main writer for that show, it's possible that McKimson and Pierce may have done this cartoon in part as a pre-emptive strike, since they knew H-B had Fred and Barney in development, and partially because 1958's "Pre-Hysterical Hare" got some sort of an award from exhibitors the year before. If stone-age gags worked once....)

I was really hoping for either Gertie or one of the Stone Age Cartoons. Oh well...
Yeah, I saw Bosko too, Jon, but I am also kinda skeptical about whether we'll see Sinkin in the Bathtub. Especially after getting my hopes up over Gertie.

Maybe, since it WAS the VERY first cartoon ever made by WB, and Friz Freleng worked on it. Hopefully they'll show some clips at the least.

There was a little woodpecker that he preferred over Tweety. I don't know if he liked the woodpecker more than Tweety, but he thought the woodpecker would make more money.
I never cared much for Taz cartoons, except for "Ducking The Devil." "Dr. Devil and Mr. Hare" had potential, and *very* nice backgrounds, though. Mckimson used unnusual character designs after the 3-D shutdown, didn't he? His Daffy was more akin to the older version, and had weird thick unduck-like feet.

Were the clips from a PD print or a restored print from WB?

I saw the commercial with the Bosko clip during one of the commercial breaks during The Popeye Show. Don't know if that helps or not.

There was a short little preview for the Freleng episode at the end of the Tasmanian Devil episode, not sure if they played the Bosko clip or not.

Nope, I just checked at the end of the Taz episode (during the "Next Time" preview), and there were only clips from "I Haven't Got a Hat", "Beauty and the Beast", and "Mr. and Mrs. Is the Name". Has the last title I mentioned been shown recently? I can think of a reason why it wouldn't be shown, but I won't mention it here.
