This was brought on by my nephew, who earlier this evening hads hiccups.

I'll either drink water upside down (by bending over), or just wait for it to go away.

Drink enough water to make him burp.. I did that a lot when I was a kid Antiyonder.. and I drank enough water to cause myself to burp.. that way the burp causes the spasm to stop.. of course that's one way to do it..

I have yet to find a cure that works for me.

I get hiccups way too frequently. And according to my Mother, I was the only baby she carried that got them in the womb. Figure that one out.

The interesting thing is, with me, they're often psychosomatic. I can't eat a bagle without getting hiccups. I realize this. How is that psychosomatic you ask? It's like this. Often times, if I'm in the company of other people eating bagles, I'll still get hiccups.

For you Azumanga Daioh fans, you know that the proper method is to pass them to someone else. ;)

I usually try holding my breath.

My mom used to have me do this as a kid and to this day it still works: Stick a pencil in your mouth (lengthwise), and then drink a glass of water from the -opposite- side of the cup (such that you essentially have bend upside-down to drink) ... Urm ... now it -may- be that my mom just enjoyed watching her kids look like fools but what the hey, it works every time!

Same here. My teacher taught me that way and it always works for me. Drink water from the far end of the cup and bend down.

Hold your breath as long as possible. Then, as soon as you let go, a friend asks you the hardest question they know.

You concetrate so much on the question, the hiccups go away. I have no idea how or why it works, but it does. :)

That's what I do too. Or I just tell the evil hiccups to go away. Strangely enough, it usually works.

I've had great luck with the following remedy: tickle the roof of your mouth with your tongue. Sounds kinky, but it's always worked for me, and also for more than a few friends and random passerby who've gotten the hiccups in my presence.

I used to do the "upside down drink of water" thing, but it never really worked, at least not for me.

This is a minor quibble, but if the object is to make the person burp, wouldn't it make more sense to drink something carbonated? I would think a Coca-Cola or a Sprite or something would make this method far easier.

The most reliable method I've found for quickly getting rid of hiccups is to drink a non-carbonated beverage while holding your nostrils shut.

Hold your breath as long as possible.

That always works for me.

drinking water upside down usually worked for me, if it didn't Then I'd hold my breath for a while and then try drinking upside down again.

Sipping something really slowly while holding your breath usualy works.

That or digesting a spoonful of sugar raw.

A number of years back, I discovered how to eliminate my hiccups almost instantly. It's amazingly simple, but it has never failed since then. I simply concentrate intensely on my breathing (sometimes I close my eyes to avoid distractions, when the situation allows), making sure that I breathe in and out slowly & deliberately, and I resist that next hiccup that wants to come out for everything I'm worth. And then they're gone. Completely. Works absolutely every time for me.

A number of people that I've shared this method with have experienced the same success I have -- but not quite all of them.

Drinking water from the opposite side of the cup always worked for me. (But, I haven't had hiccups in a long time.)

I just let it work itself out. I had a babysitter who said to drink water through a paper towel. Interesting taste, don't know if it did actually work ;)

I'll just wait it out, or if I'm impatient (which if you know me at all, you know that I'm always impatient) I'll drink some Coke or eating a spoon of sugar, and that usually does it.

Getting rid of hiccups is all about bringing your breething under control. So, there are two methods: holding your breath, or trying to relax while breathing deeply, or a combo of both.

As for drinking water, it works, because it's a variant on holding your breath. Drinking a tall glass of water can knock 'em. But, next time, DON'T drink the water upside down or from the far edge. Those details are superfluous and meaningless, and invented mostly to make someone look very comical while trying to get rid of hiccups. Drinking water NORMALLY is all you need to do if you go with that method.

Personally, I usually Drink a tall glass of water, and then try to relax and breath deeply to get rid of them.

I hold my breath for like thirty seconds just to get rid of mine.

How are you supposed to drink water through a tissue? I don't get it.

I've had hiccups for about 3 years now. They're pretty spaced out though sometimes it's only like once an hour. I'm told my grandfather had the same problem.=/

I've reread my original sentence several times. I think you assumed the process to be more complicated than it possibly could be.

Well...let's see..

Usually I drink a glass of water. Or...I just swallow six times while holding my breath. Sometimes the second one doesn't work.
