This has probably been asked before, but oh well. Call me Mr. Non-Lurker.
So I was at Suncoast this morning and I was looking at anime soundtracks. I ended up buying the Azumanga Daioh OST (a great one, BTW), but I was pondering the Evangelion soundtracks. The problem is, there are a good five or six of them! And many of them seem to have tracks that cross over from disc to disc.
My question is, which Eva soundtrack is the best one to buy? By that, I mean which one has the majority of the background music from the TV series? I could care less about remixes, and I don't want to buy a lot of the same songs twice if I don't have to.

Essentially all you really need is
Refrain of Evangelion (contains most of the stuff from Death)
Day of Second Impact (CAT Long version and some popular songs)
End of Evangelion (Komm Sussert Todd, Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring, Thanatos)
It's nearly impossible to buy Eva soundtracks without repeating material, but with these you should do well.

Seriously I really hate that song...and the remixes do nothing, NOTHING!

Yeah, they really drove that into the ground.
Frank Sinatra > Megumi Hayashibara (regrettibly)but FMTTM wasn't originaly Sinatra, he just populized it...
I was looking through my Geneon screener DVD I got from Otakon, and there's at least a dozen NGE CDs there. I think there's over 2 dozen in Japan. More will come when the live-action films come out.

The funny thing is, all the new EVA merchendice is all re-hash. There has been no new story additions to Evangelion since the series and movies. Yeah you have LA Eva, but it could fall flat due to hardcore fans hating because it's not like the series and features the english language and caucasian characters and normal people hating it because they have no idea what it is. I mean really they could easily make a new Eva series, do somthing like what Marvel and DC do with thir Ultimate/Unlimited lines. But all they do is release Eva in some FRESH NEW ULTIMATE REMASTERED FORM THAT WILL END ALL AND HAS NEW BOX ART....until a new video format comes along...
Besides the Eva Platinum releases will probably be condenced to THE BOX once the final regular volume is released, and then people will be kicking themselves...
However the one thing I hope LA eva does is give a cohereant storyline, none of this whimsical psycobabble and then concludes it with a rock solid ending...

Right,
seeing as that "whimsical psychobabble" was the core of the show, and the show would last maybe 12 episodes (if you cut out the filler eps).
I really don't see what those who hated the "psychobabble" could still find enjoyable in it, seeing as it's abundant in it.
If you don't like it, eh. Fine. Just move on to something else, because Evangelion wouldn't be Evangelion without the "psychobabble" (which I'm sick of haters calling it that).
It would be Rahxephon.:p j/k

It would be Rahxephon.:p j/kBah it would be closer to ZOE, which wouldn't be a bad thing. By psycobabble I mean the last episodes with everyone sitting in the symbolic theatre and then at the end everyone going CONGRADULATIONS at the end also those re-cap episodes and everyone constantly questioning "why"...The Biblical references can be trimmed down for them to fit into a movie...that I have no problem with...
Because I don't go to a theatre to see a movie about people sitting in a theatre...

Bah it would be closer to ZOE which wouldn't be a bad thing. That's debatable.
Because I don't go to a theatre to see a movie about people sitting in a theatre..Dude, you and I both know Evangelion went all "art house movie" towards the end. You don't have to like it, but you sound kinda naive when ripping on Eva for being what it is. There are PLENTY of mech anime out there that fit the mold most people who like the genre prefer. I don't see much of a point in complaining about it.
It just feels kinda stupid to expect anything else from Eva. Like wanting Punch Drunk Love to follow the Adam Sandler 50 First Dates formula. It's not that kind of film.

Unless ofcourse they take bits and pieces of all eva continuities and combine them(ala Spiderman, X-Men). I'm just not sure how all aspects of eva are going to be covered in a 90 minute movie...or are there going to be more besides the inital one? I'd really prefer if they didn't use the final episodes of the series in a movie and instead take the sequences from the Eva Movies(D&R, EOE, etc.)...

I agree with you on the concept of the live-action movie.
I would much rather they NOT MAKE IT AT ALL, but if they have to, then I hope they go the route you suggested: "take the sequences from the Eva Movies(D&R, EOE, etc.)..."
Though I would prefer they just not touch it and move on to other properties that can be more easily adapted and don't have such a rabid fanbase (myself included).

But to tell ya the truth, I really want a Live Action GITS movie...or a live action Appleseed....just more Shirow Masamune....MORE...and the Tachicoma/Fuchicoma capsule figures
However I think the EVA movie is going to be like Spiderman, in the sense that it will show it's future potential in sequels(and that the manga could actualy be done by then, and maybe the ending to that could be better than the series/movies)

Basically, a must have are the three TV OSTs. It has all the best music like the cool "tum-tum-tum-tum-tumtum" battle music, the "next episode" music, and the softer, chilling stuff, like Rei's themes. "Second Impact" is basically a "best of" CD of the soundtracks, but to be honest, it's incomplete, in my opinion. I really like Shiro Sagisu's work on this series and Second Impact doesn't really do it justice. There's just a lot of stuff in the Eva soundtracks that I really like. There's various arrangements for the themes like chilling piano solos or dreamy acoustics. Yes, you will hear various arrangements for "Fly Me to the Moon", but I kinda like them in their own way as well.
I'm not sure if they released the "Death" soundtrack stateside, but for me, it was kind of a letdown. There were some good new arrangements and string solos, but the last twenty minutes was (I think) all an aria from an opera. If you can name it, you're a better person than I. The track was labeled "Dies irae [REQUIEM]", and was considered a bonus track. On the other hand, "End of Eva"'s OST is great 'cause it has "Komm, süsser Tod" ("Come Sweet Death", that happy-sounding rock ballad with the depressing lyrics), and the vocal version of "THANATOS" that plays during the credits.
I think "Refrain" is a best of CD also, but more on the classical scores. This is one I don't have and never got around to getting so I'll have to eventually pick this one up. (If only I could afford the S2 boxed set... :( )
Hope that helps you out. The three Eva TV OSTs are definitely gonna be on the top of your list if you want to get them

I apologize for participating in the thread derailing, I just got pissed off at this off topic post:

He started it. :pYeah but I have good reason too....I have all the DVD's, Manga, Action Figures, and other parafanailia...
I WANT SOMTHING FRESH...Dammit other mecha series re-invent themselves, Eva is no different....(they added that one Prototype to the videogame and gave Eva 1 super armor, make a series based on that)
True that there are many other mecha series, but dammit only Evangelion has those designs!
and now I finished it...

I agree. I would love for an alternate telling of the story ala Evangelion 2 for PS2,where Toji is a permanent pilot of Unit 03, and Kawaoru doesn't betray Shinji etc. .
At LEAST an adaptation of the manga (all the characters are more toned down and realistic, especially Shinji).
