Marvel Comics in June 2005 (http://www.comicbookresources.com/news/newsitem.cgi?id=4970), courtesy of Comic Book Resources (http://www.comicbookresources.com/). Marvel debuts a new ratings system, raises the prices on all of its $2.25 books to $2.50, and kicks off The House of M. Nothing will ever be the same!

So what are you going to pick up?

Nothing will ever be the same!
I really hate that saying. They've promoted Black Panther with that, and to be honest, I really don't care. They can do whatever the hell they want with Black Panther, as far as I'm concerned. But, as someone who reads all the Spider-Man books, Daredevil, Fantastic Four, Captain America monthlies, and the Hulk and Astonishing X-Men TPBs, is it too much to ask to leave the rest of the titles alone?

I know these "changes that will shock the Marvel Universe!" rarely happen anyway, but still, can't one book story actually stay in that story? And if you're not going to change anything... why bother promoting it?

BTW, Mark Waid on Spider-Man brings a smile to this Spidey fanboy's face. Hopefully the Spidey books will be worth reading again! :)

I really hate that saying.
Me too. I considered mocking Marvel gently in the opening post, but thought better of it. ;)

At any rate, I've got some pretty genuine concerns about Marvel's direction, and they're summed up quite nicely in this month's solicitations. Crossovers, shock storytelling, variant covers galore, an insistence on constantly shaking up the status quo... basically, everything that drove me out of comics in the 1990's coming into prominence again. It's not cause for serious alarm, but as a fan of Marvel's characters, they're making it very hard for me to be excited about the future. A lot of people enjoy the current approach, which is just fine for them, but it kind of sucks for guys like me who prefer a different take.

Anyhow, I digress...

The House of M starts. I am officially not interested. New Avengers has been tolerable, but "Chaos" was a disaster from top to bottom, so I'm staying far, far away from this book, and from everything that ties into it. Remember, folks: just say "no" to Marvel suddenly deciding Wanda Maximoff is a villain.

Gravity looks modestly interesting. It's an actual, new concept (as opposed to a redressing of an existing concept like X-23 or Machine Teen), so it might be worth a look. I do wish Marvel would release something under the "Marvel Next" label that wasn't about teenagers, though. Neat things happen to people at other ages, too, you know.

The Ultimate titles looks as dependable as ever this month. The price hike is a shame, though.

What really peaks my interest this month is the miniseries taking place in the M2 (Spider-Girl) timeline. The tagline is "A weekly five-part event that unites two generations!" Anybody else get the impression they're ending the M2 timeline or consolidating it with the 616 timeline somehow? That would kinda suck.

The Spider-Man titles, at some point, will get good again. Honest.

Was Shanna The She-Devil originally supposed to be a miniseries? I was under the impression that it was an ongoing. Or did it suffer the Jubilee fate?

I have my doubts about anything and everything Bendis, but Daredevil is the exception. "Decalogue" looks really neat, and we get another great cover from Alex Maleev. This whole storyline sounds very promising. I've been waiting for the gory details on Matt and Milla's marriage. I'm also looking forward to this month's GLA, Captain America, and Incredible Hulk.

I also think it's super-cool that Marvel's got a reprint book again. I plan to buy every issue as a show of support, because I heartily believe there should be more reprint titles out there. This month's Marvel Milestones contains the origins for two great supervillains (Dr. Doom and the Red Skull), and one pseudo-villain (Namor), so it should be lots of old-timey fun.

Buy Runaways. If you only buy one Marvel book, go for this one. It's the safest bet, and it needs your support the most. Come on. Go for it. You know you want to.

Astonishing X-Men's first year comes to a close. I predict it will be awesome, like all eight of the issues currently available. I wonder how long the book will be on hiatus...

So apparently Dream Police is a miniseries, not a graphic novel. Or it's a graphic novel hacked up to serve as a miniseries. This makes sense, considering Joe Quesada's recent comments on how Marvel would never release an original JMS graphic novel when they could release it in three forms and make thrice the profit. Oh well. It looks and sounds pretty cool, at any rate.

Moving onto collections, it looks like Marvel is releasing a ton of Fantastic Four-centric TPBs this month. Gee, I wonder why that is? At any rate, there's some neat stuff in here. Spider-Man/Human Torch is very fun, and well worth your time, all the Ultimate Fantastic Four material is good, and that Fantastic Four Omnibus hardcover sounds truly awesome. Way to tick off people who bought the Masterworks, Marvel. Still, it's a decent deal and sounds like a very cool collection. If I could afford it, I'd be all over it.

X4, which totally doesn't deserve a hardcover, gets one, as does Phoenix: Endsong, which totally does deserve a hardcover. You win some, you lose some.

Daredevil 74
Fantastic Four: Foes 6
G.L.A. 3
Supreme Power 17

Wow. Goodbye Marvel. There is a standalone issue of Ultimate Spider-Man but I can't list it because the way things are going, I'll have dropped the title by the end of the Hobgoblin arc. I'm skipping the Ultimate Fantastic Four two-parter and just waiting for when Mark Millar finally gets on the title. Its sad that I am more faithful to Marvel minis than the regulars. The only title I'm really loyal to right now is Daredevil and its nearing the end of its run. Oh yeah, and Supreme Power.

And are you speaking of the Lying in the gutters article from months ago with Wolverine solving the whole thing? You know that was total BS, right?

On to my list for the month.

[$2.50] X-Men #172
[$2.99] Young Avengers #5

TOTAL: $54.36

Two double-shipping titles brings the totals up for the month and House of M goes on for 8 issues. I don't plan on getting any of its related "extra" minis, but if a book I read ties into it, I'll get it.

I'm not getting it, but I was very suprised that Marvel is doing a Spider-Girl miniseries. It must be doing great in the trade market if they are doing it for a title that they've been quite unconfident about in the past. Kudos to Tom DeFalco and the gang for continuing to suceed in a failed line that ended years ago.

Howdy,

So very little that would attract my attention in these solicitations, but this week's "Basement Tapes" column reveals the nitty-gritty behind the Matt Fraction/Sam Kieth team-up in X-Men Unlimited (http://www.comicbookresources.com/columns/index.cgi?column=tbt&article=2121) #9 that digs into Wolverine's Greatest Deaths:

On the flip-side of that is my inner nine-year old that wants to see stuff exploding and dudes getting kicked, and having the chance to tear stuff up Wolverine-stylee was pretty *sweet*. I mean, Devil Dinosaur eats him on page one. IT IS RAD. And, dude, Sam Kieth is drawing it!
(emphasis mine, language edited for content) OK, so maybe this gets a pre-order, if only to see Sam Kieth drawing Wolverine getting eaten by Devil Dinosaur. That's about 7 different kinds of great.

More profanity-laden explanations available at the above link.
