View Full Version : Mobile Suit Gundam SEED "A Place for the Soul" Talkback (Spoilers)
http://fridays.toonzone.net/talkbacks/premiere.gifhttp://library.toonzone.net/talkbacks/seed.jpg
In the distant future, mankind can never get enough power. Space + power = BOOM!
Last time on Mobile Suit Gundam SEED:
"Kira and Mu fought off Rau's ever-changing gun as he explained about his origin as well as that of Mu and Kira. Namely, the fact that Rau is a clone of Mu's father and that Kira was specially bred by his father to become the ultimate Coordinator, though he was eventually saved by his birth mother. Outside, Dearka filled Yzak in on what's been going on with him for the past 15 or so episodes, and gives him a choice. The Alliance begins to attack the rebels again once the Gundam are fully recharged, against the better judgement of Natarle. Meanwhile, Rau begins to break down for some reason and loses his mask, escaping in the commotion. Kira and Mu, who is severely wounded, head back to the Archangel before Freedom goes out to assist Justice. Rau, in a spit of insanity, orders the ZAFT fleet to attack, before sending Flay out in a lifepod with a special disk towards the Dominion..."
This week on Mobile Suit Gundam SEED:
"As the Freedom, Justice, Forbidden, Raider, and Calamity rumble with each other, Natarle and Azreal decide on whether to admit Flay on board the ship or not. She makes a desperate plea to the Dominion to allow on her on board and to not, you know, kill her. Unfortunately (or fortunately?), Kira hears the message and his already shaky mind delves into more angst as he tries to rescue her. Just what are the METEORs anyway?"

The ending wouldn`t have been rushed if they didn`t streth out the beginning so much, which is why everyone seems to be pleased with destiny so far, in that nothing takes longer or shorter than it should. They learned from their mistakes on seed`s first half and aren`t repeating them.
Although I personally didn`t think the ending was that rushed except for the final few moments of the last ep.

For those who like the BGMs, try finding the "Symphony Seed" collection on Direct Connect. It takes the most familair themes of the show and puts them into ten beautifully orchestrated pieces. They`re among my favorite MP3s ever, personally.

Maybe it was the horrible fight choreography, because you have to admit, most of the fights in the first half of SEED sucked. Sure, most of it is due to Kira and Athrun's unwillingness to fight each other and more stock footage than Sealab 2021, but ehh =\
Destiny's fights, on the other hand, are much better choreographed, right from the get-go.

They`re among my favorite MP3s ever, personally. I love the BGM. I tor--err, got the OSTs, and they're great: Invoke, Believe, the other theme songs and endings, and all the orchestrated pieces I forget the names of and are very repetetive, each one occuring in almost every Victor Entertainment one, but are very, very good. Ya know?

Besides, "good ratings" is all relative. We don't know if it's relative to all programming on the network or relative to other programming in its timeslot. We won't know unless we get numbers, and that's nigh impossible.

Well, the Freedom's lost its head, I got my question from last week answered, Kira learns there's never a wrong time to cry, Lacus is quite the strategist, and we got a whole lot more Flay in one episode than we've had in the past 10-15.

If it's unedited, why's it rated TV-Y7-FV?
Because in all honesty, there's nothing in this show that warrants giving it a TV-PG rating. I think a TV-G rating would have sufficed.
But in any case, nothing outside of Adult Swim usually gets a rating higher than TV-Y7 (except for the occassional movie), so they just slapped a Y7 on it and called it a night.
Similarly, there are episodes of Inu Yasha on Adult Swim that are so tame, they could've aired uncut on Toonami and given a TV-Y7FV raiting. But it still was given a PG rating, simply because AS will never go below that again.

For all you Lacus = Relena people NOW SAY THAT.
I can't ever imagine Relena ordering warships to concentrate fire on another ship to try and destroy it.
I think thus ends the debate. I like Lacus a lot more now (not that I ever disliked her, but she felt so, un-not-useless at the beginning of the series). She's really kicking butt now, and I like it.
Freedom gets "Tolle'd". LOL
Makes you wonder if they have any spare heads on the Eternal, or if the Freedom's gonna be the "Headless Gundam" for the rest of the series (what's left of it, anyway). Maybe they can swipe one from one of the Astrays, or just beat one of the druggies and swipe his.
"Find the Way" is such a nice song. I like it.
Mu's still out of action. Boo.
Everyone's favorite Psycho Hottie becomes very popular, as the druggies and Kira race to take her into their arms. The scene where she meets Natarle brought a smile to my face; it reminded me of an interesting piece of trivia about the two.
Yes, Kira, it's ok to cry, you girly man.
Cagalli gets removed from Kira's room. Come on, she's his sister, whereas Lacus is just his girl. Who do you think outranks whom, hmm?
Oh, wait, Lacus' ship, oh yeah.
My prediction for the future: Mu will return to service, and kick butt in a major way. Flay will get stares on the Dominion for wearing a ZAFT uniform. With no Coordinators to latch onto, she'll go for the nearest thing and hang out with the druggies, eventually getting herself thrown in the brig for Possession of a Controlled Substance. Kira will make a "neato" head out of paper mache and scrap metal for the Freedom, to the amusement of all. We finally find out what a "METEOR" is: the Head on the Eternal. (Let's all hope they get them working soon; Andy's been holding it in since they left the PLANTs) And Yzak defects after Dearka tells him that there's going to be a kegger on the Archangel after this is all over. He lies; it's a potluck with red kool-ade.
It's no longer a problem if kids play with guns.
It IS a problem if they have an idea on how to reload them. True. Load a child's gun, and he can hold up a convenience store today.
Teach a child to load his own gun, and he can hold up convenience stores for a lifetime.
Cagalli gets removed from Kira's room. Come on, she's his sister, whereas Lacus is just his girl. Who do you think outranks whom, hmm?
Oh, wait, Lacus' ship, oh yeah.
Cagalli's not really in the mood to comfort Kira. Just as she was starting to drift away from the fact that the two are siblings, this picture comes along. Hell, Mu may have told Cagalli the whole story as well. If Cagalli had stayed, she would just started questioning Kira, trying to make sense out of this whole ordeal (like she did in the last 20 episodes or so).

Oh, wait, Lacus' ship, oh yeah.Well Athrun could see Kira was in no mood to have Cagalli pestering him with questions about the pictures. He was emotionally and physically drained and didn't need that. Cagalli's not much with the 'comforting' and is more of a confrontational personality.
As for the crying. I said this before about the dub and I'll say it again, the only good thing about Kira's english VA is that his crying isn't so horribly cringe-inducing as the Japanese VA(Souichiro Hoshi). His crying as Kira was like a cat being tortured.

Hmm, I think Cagalli was just surprised that there was a second picture which might have piqued her curiosity. So she wanted to learn more about that particular picture from Kira. But before that could happen, Athrun took her outside knowning that Kira needed time to himself.

Even though Freedom is not destoryed it isn't operational. Buster isn't destoryed either, but Providence put it out of commision.

1. Whoa, what a double team against the Vesalius. Finally brought down; goodbye Vesalius.
2. It's good that ZAFT wasn't stupid in putting all the monitors on the Freedom's head for when it gets blown off. :)
(A common impractical mistake in Gundamhood.)
3. I hope Azrael examined that disk for viruses, trojans, or other malicious programs before running it. That could've been what Rau meant by ending the war - paralyzing the EA's whole system Independence Day-style with a Mac. :D
3b. So now, the EA could also build nuclear jammers. Azrael no longer needs to capture the Freedom or Justice. ZAFT and EA could resume to nuclear annihilation. Or a cold war. Just like when Russia stole the nuclear bomb blueprint from America.
4. The way Fllay was bawling at Natarle, Natarle should've first taken her for the standard medical checkup to make sure she wasn't molested.
5. So Rau ages due to short telomeres? (Telomeres, BTW, are the ends of the chromosomes and serve to keep the chromosomes stable.) :ack:
6. Heh, Cagalli should've told Athrun and Lacus that Fllay wasn't just Kira's friend but also his ex-lover. :anime:
7. What's that red Gundam? And what the heck is that Gundam monstrosity in the preview? Not an 0083 reject, I hope. :o

After thinking for a while, I've decided to save myself and the posters on here a great deal of frustration, and quit watching SEED. It's obvious that whatever message the writers wanted to get across with this show didn't work on me, and no matter what they do, I will remain firmly sided with the Naturals.
Not only am I giving up SEED, I am also severing all ties with the SEED universe. I will not watch Destiny when it comes out, and I will stop purchasing the Astray manga.
Maybe if they release a side story featuring a sympathetic Natural character, I might change my mind, but given the current Coordinator bias, I doubt that will happen.

Surprising they try to make it seem him and flay were in completely different rooms when it happened.. but now they're actually showing her going down on him... I think i saw an edit though.. looked like digital bikini
Unless there's a camera on "Little Kira," with footage he looks at later (this is a flashback!), there's no way she was going down on him, just closing in for a very passionate lip-lock; not to say she didn't taste Kira's manjuice at some point . . .

But I don't understand why you say you will stop purchasing the astray mangas then say you want a side story with a natural character... Isn't that what Lowe is?
I don't really see how the writers have failed to convey anything in the natural vs coordinator struggle. Right now BOTH SIDES in the war are being led by maniacs. Patrick Zala and his belief that Coordinators should govern all mankind and the naturals have Blue Cosmos who started this whole thing.
The coordinators never did anything at all to naturals. Naturals attacked and destroyed a civillian colony just because they had an inferiority complex towards coordinators who at that point had done nothing, but live in space peacefully and be subject to rules by the Earth pertaining what they could grow for food and other stuff just so they would remain dependent on Earth.

I used to look forward to Farscape on Fridays... now I look forward to Gundam SEED.
I'm gonna be really sad once this show is gone from the airwaves.
I know. SEED is the only thing that keeps my Fridays from being complete dissapointments.
The only gripe I have is the MS fights were not satisfiying to me. They have been getting better, but they just aren't as good as other Gundam series. This series isn't about Gundam fights, but I still whish they were a little better. I really like the Battleship Vs. Battleship fights though.
As for the episode, I have no idea why people are saying not much happend in this one. Quite a bit happend.
I like how they played "Find the Way" at the end, with all the crying going on. Nicely done. Plus, "Find the Way" is my favorite SEED song after "River".
A+ (or 10/10)
I really like the Battleship Vs. Battleship fights though. Yea, most of the battleships are just places to house the Mobile Suits in other series. I like how they are actually viable threats (well, except for the Valiants, which only hit anything once every 20 episodes).

Igelstellung - The machine guns that never run out of ammo
Valiants - The charged pulse cannons near the ship's engines
Gottfrieds - The big guns that shoot green lasers right above the Mobile Suit launchers.
Corinthos/Sledgehammers - The big missiles shot out of the side of the ship. I think the Sledgehammers have multiple smaller missiles hidden inside.

So the directors and writers want Kira to stay attached to the psycho-manipulative one out to perform a genetic culling, with the vague notion that he'll change her mind because he's him. Err...good for her, bad for Kira...
Realize feels weaker for me in the tv version against that fast montage of images. Not only are most just a rehash of previously used shots, they fly by not letting any of them sink in.
I really really dislike the second animated ending. The only good shots are the first and last. Everything in-between is far too cheerful. It's actually kinda disturbing to see certain characters getting along that should be.

In destiny, Kira is very cold, and dosen`t seem to react emotionally. He`s pretty level headed, actually, but he still treats Lacus as a sister more than anything else.

Destiny Spoilers
Well, do keep in mind she hasn`t been in the last five or six episodes(of Destiny).
She is supposed to do something important on saturday`s ep, though. If you`ve seen the latest ep, even Athrun acknowledges Cagalli`s faults.
Cagalli`s charachter did change a lot, and with good reason, when they left orb in seed since she basically lost her country and her father all at once. Shinn`s abuse(although somewhat justified) certainly didn`t help any. His animosity toward athrun seems solely based on his connection to Cagalli and Orb, as he seems to respect athrun in other ways.
Just about everyone around her, both antagonistic and on her side, is telling her that she`s acting too much on her emotions.(I believe this is what athrun says in 22, though not to her face)

You silly heads, we all know the correct answers are Believe > ignited > Invoke = Realize = Pride >>> Moment and Anna ni Isshodatta no ni > Reason > Find the Way = Life Goes On >>> River, but I digress...
And yes, Cagalli is slated to launch in Strike Rouge in Episode 23, along with Andy's custom Murasame :anime:. Supposedly, she's going to (unsuccessfully) try to stop the fight, but here's hoping she's improved her piloting abilities in two years. The only reason she survived Jachin Due was because of her main character aura.
As for her personality, how would you feel if your father sacrificed himself in the way he did, only to find out he wasn't really your father and that you were the daughter of a mad scientist? Not only that, but now you're in charge of rebuilding a country and trying to prevent anything like the EA invasion from happening again. Fast forward to Destiny, where we find out she's a pawn in the hands of the Seirans and the rest of Orb's council AND has a brand new conflict to deal with, which could potentially be bigger than the last one. Oh, and her boyfriend ran off to rejoin the ZAFT military and her twin brother had to rescue her from getting married to a guy with a purple mullet.
Tell me you wouldn't be affected AT ALL by any of that.

And it hasn't slowed down any of the other characters who've lost loved ones.Because Fllay and Miri weren`t affected at all.;) Athrun was a trained soldier by the time he lost his father, and had seen plenty of death already. It wouldn`t affect him as much as a civillian.
and as Nick said, Cagalli went through A LOT more than just losing her dad.

Miri recovered very quickly. Forgot about Fllay somehow, but... I'm thinking more about the general lack of lasting impact that her death (and the bio-lab revelation) has on Kira. Or Murrue's recovery from the loss of Mwu. Or the ZAFT trio's recovery from losing Nichol (well, Athrun doesn't count so much, since Nichol's killer was also his friend... but Yzak gets over it surprisingly well.)

Don't forget the feelings she likely had for Kira before she knew he was her brother. She seemed disgusted with herself after finding out they were twins. That's something that can really screw someone up too.

Unlike everyone else, Cagalli`s life fundamentally changed when her father died, as nick said. The ZAFT boys were hardened soldiers by then, and had seen a lot of death. They did show anger, but got over it over time. Murrue lost Mwu at the very end of Seed, so we really didn`t get to see how it affected her that much.
As for Kira, judging by his cold demeanor in Destiny, I`d say he was affected. In Seed he was depressed, in Destiny he seems determined and unshakeable.
Realize feels weaker for me in the tv version against that fast montage of images. Not only are most just a rehash of previously used shots, they fly by not letting any of them sink in.
Realize sounds so weird in TV-Size after hearing the full version so much. That, and the fact that it doesn't blend into the show nearly as well as Believe makes me wish Believe stayed the OP until the end. Hell, Realize sounds even more off in the show than Moment does, which is saying something.
I really really dislike the second animated ending. The only good shots are the first and last. Everything in-between is far too cheerful. It's actually kinda disturbing to see certain characters getting along that should be.I find it hilarious that all the machines & stuff are wrecked except for Justice and Freedom, who are squeaky clean. Oh, and that while we got the return of the Mobius Zero, the Skygraspers were missing.
That reminds me, what DID happen to the Mobius Zero and the Skygrasper 1? Are they just sitting in the docking bay, gathering dust, or did the technicians take them apart for spare parts?

I don't remember the edited dub broadcast this past week, but did they leave in any mention that Lacus' father was killed? I don't remember at this point. I just watched the uncut DVD and was touched when Lacus told Kira, "My father...he's dead...", and then she breaks down and starts crying in Kira's arms.

Yea they did but instead it was "my father, he didn't make it" For some reason they don't like the words die, dead or dies. In Gundam Wing, every word like killed, dead, or die was replaced by destroyed. Somehow I dont see the reason for that. Destroyed actualy seems worce than killed.

And since they actually cut the scene where Mr. Clyne was gunned down, no one watching CN's version knows what happened to him.
And in Gundam Wing, WS only removed versions of the word 'kill'. 'Dead', 'death', 'die', etc. was all okay in that dub. Only 'killing' was bad.

Well, they showed the guns being pointed at him, as well as Zala saying "But Clyne's daughter is still alive!" I'm pretty sure anyone who watched got the idea that he's dead.
I just wish we saw him do more before then. I mean, we never did see what he actually did to help his daughter.

Depends on how cynical your view of education and critical thinking skills is. Sometimes, such things need to be shown. It lessens the impact when it's offscreen (the intent of the editing I'm sure) and allows for ambiguity in interpretation that shouldn't be there.
I wish they'd have shown more of both of the Clynes. They're almost too conveinent.
