I've been watching this anime for the last week or two, and I am quite impressed at what I've seen. And I can easily understand why people are comparing it to the Disney movie Atlantis: The Lost Empire and even Laputa.

The animation (most of it) was done by GAINAX (of Evangelion and FLCL fame), and the story is (very!) loosely based on Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

It concerns a young French inventor, Jean, who meets an enigmatic young circus performer (the Nadia of the title) who wears an even more enigmatic gem around her neck, the Blue Water, which is sought after by a lady named Grandis and her henchmen, Hanson and Sanson (best comic villains this side of Team Rocket...without that **** cat!), who later become allies to the two kids when Nadia and her gem are sought by a sinister villain named Gargoyle and his Neo-Atlanteans (who all wear masks).

The kids also get help from Captain Nemo and the crew of the Nautilus, who are engaged in some sort of war with Gargoyle and the Neo-Atlanteans, who, from what I've seen so far, plan to conquer the world...and Nadia and the "Blue Water" gem figure prominently in the Neo's plans.

I haven't seen the episodes where we find out about Nadia's past, or why the Blue Water is needed (the collection I'm watching only covers the first 20 episodes), and I can hardly wait to see how the rest of the story unfolds.

Has anyone else seen it?

I own the entire series and the movie, but the movie sucks...

Yes. All of it, a long time ago. Watch out for the late #20s "deserted island" eps. It's notoriously compared to Looney Tunes. :D

NHK commissioned Gainax to make it. To this day, Gainax would rather forget that quarrelsome relationship. According to a Gainax producer, whenever they received faxes from the NHK execs telling them what to "correct" in the scripts, the first thing they did was trash it. :D

Yet, despite all those troubled times, Nadia was constantly voted as the Top Anime Female in anime mag polls even years after the series ended. ;)

As radically different in some aspects Nadia is from other Gainax works, I think it operates on a similar of metaphysics that Eva and a lot of other Gainax stuff work on. It's just that in Nadia, it's not only concerned with that philosophy, but it's also telling a pretty cool story in the process with some relatively straight forward character relationships as well. Nadia's almost like a key for understanding Eva and FLCL as such.

I have the first DVD, and It certainly doesn't look it's age! I enjoyed what I saw and want to buy the rest one of these days :)

From what I've heard they actually had a trash can right underneath the fax machine. They didn't even look at the faxes.

To me Nadia is by far the best title Gainax ever put out.

I just pick up this series last summer. I enjoyed it very much. I have to agree the movie sucked. The series had better animation than the movie.

I've seen many of the Nadia episodes.

I heard that Miyazaki was about to work on this. Is this true?

It just started on Time Warner's Anime On Demand (up to ep.4 or 5). At times it hits me as a bit cutesy and simple (adorable kids and pet to match, not-too-threatening toady bad guys, Elecktra with the party mask) but I mostly like it. Can't imagine it holding up as a great favorite though.
