Oh gods, there are so many. What's the criteria though? Best at what?

For all time best villains, I am biased towards David Xanatos and Demona of course.

I think Vicious from Cowboy Bebop was great.

I'm hesitant to include villains who came from comics or manga, but just for the fun of it. The Joker was great, Ra's al Ghul, Lex Luthor, Darkseid, etc.

Animated villains who originated from manga. Well, very few can top Griffith/Femto. Though Naraku and Makoto Shishio come close.

I thought BW Megatron was great.

Way too broad a question.

My three are Demona, Megabyte and of course..............................................................................Slade.

These three we're I think the best ever produced. They gave the heroes they fought a tremendous run for their money.

Out of these three, I think Slade stands out among the three.

There is no way we're ever gonna get a definitive answer to this question, because what makes a great Bad Guy is very much a matter of opinion. Probably the best we can do is compile a list of highly regarded contenders, and even then it would make sense to divide 'em into genres.
Ex: Best Comicbook, Anime, Movie, and TV Series villains.

Personally, I'd like to see them catagorized by type: best Completely Evil, Psychologically Complicated, Almost Good-Guy, Funny Yet Evil, and Truly Silly villains.*

A bit complicated, but probably the only way to get a reasonably complete compilation of everybody's faves.

* My nominees for those titles would be The Joker, Dr. Doom, Magneto, Mojo Jojo, and Senior Senior Senior (the 'Kim Possible' baddie who became a supervillain because he needed a hobby.)

In the DC world, it has to be the Joker. In Marvel, it's the Kingpin. In Anime, it is a tie between Shinobu Sensui and Orochimaru. In CGI, it goes to Megabyte. In Disney, Jafar takes the cake. In video game based cartoons, Bowser is king. In Nicktoons, ummm...I cannot recall any villains but a lot of antagonists. I can't think of another genre as of now, but the best villain overall will take a LONG time to decide and somehow be decided by a game of twister.

Personally, I'd like to see them catagorized by type: best Completely Evil, Psychologically Complicated, Almost Good-Guy, Funny Yet Evil, and Truly Silly villains.*

Completely evil: Frollo from Hunchback of Notre Dame. Still gives me chills

Psychologically complicated: David Xanatos from Gargoyles. An awesome, yet complex villian.

Almost Good Guy: MacBeth from Gargoyles. You will probably say he ISN'T a villian and I'd agree. Hence why he's here.

Funny yet evil: Lobo from STAS and JL. Well, maybe not EVIL persay but he IS nasty.

Truly silly villian: Chairface Chippendale from The Tick. No contest. He tried to carve his name in giant letters on the moon and actually got off a CHA still seen in later episodes. Best. Villian. Motivation. EVER!

Personal favorites.

Trigun's Legato, a truly crazy guy who just sent chills up my spy.

Makoto Shishio from Kenshin: Dirty, manipulative, and incredibly powerful. Also I have to give nods to Saito and Sojirou from the smae series.

Outside of the realm of anime.

Exosquad's Phaeton: A ruthless megalomaniac who one could argue had a justified source of rage.

Joker from Batman: For reasons other people will anme.

Darkseid from Superman/JL: A truly ruthless villan, who really isn't above anything.

Xanatos from Gargoyles: He was complicated, and a truly intelligent villan. I also liked how he changed throughout the show.

Completely evil: Frollo from Hunchback of Notre Dame. Still gives me chills
How could I have forgotten him. He was really creppy.

Oh and let me add Scar from the Lion King to the mix.

Favorite Disney villain's probably Cruella de Vil.

Per Sharklady's comments:

Completely Evil: Hmm... not sure. Maybe the Joker?

Psychologically Complicated: not sure again. Maybe Scarface/the Ventriloquist (B:TAS)?

Almost Good-Guy: Catwoman?

Funny Yet Evil: Mr. Burns

Truly Silly villains: Mr. Mxyzptlk (though technically evil as well, of course).

The funniest villian ever to me is Ron Stoppable from Kim possible, the episode when he got shot from the good and bad ray, that was funny when Dracin turn into good and Ron turn into bad, Boooooya.

I really wouldn't know about the other catergories, but best silly villians...

The Tandy Brothers (Bonus Stage) - I mean when you take over the world and just get bored only a few minutes in you know you're not dealing with your average villian. Not to mention that they were raised in the streets... of Eternia.

> Almost Good-Guy: Catwoman? <

Definitely a strong contender! I almost included her on my list of faves, but I already had one 'Batman' villain there (maybe I should've included her anyway- Batman's foes would certainly be my nominee for 'Best Rogues Gallery'.)

Psychologically complicated: David Xanatos from Gargoyles. An awesome, yet complex villian.

Almost Good Guy: MacBeth from Gargoyles. You will probably say he ISN'T a villian and I'd agree. Hence why he's here.
I saw Xanatos and MacBeth more as antagonistic than villains. Even Xanatos said it himself, he didn't try cliched villainy until "Cloud Fathers", which was much later in the series. Plus he's helped save the day a couple times. I guess he's more amoral and an enemy to the gargoyles (who stand in his way) than a 100% villain. But then again, Gargoyles had few of those.

Thanks to Sharklady's subcategories, I had to approve of this thread. Here are my nominees:

Completely Evil - Jackal and Hyena

Psychologically Complicated - Lex Luthor

Almost Good Guy - The Grinch

Funny Yet Evil - Harley Quinn

Truly Silly Villain - Ridiculous Lucky Captain Rabbit King (PPG)

I don't see MacBeth as a villian either but an almost hero. Almost, but not quite.

As for Xanatos I don't see him as evil at all but he IS complicated and I have to say he done some not-good things. But with the exception of kidnapping Hudson he's never really tried to kill anyone has he?

I think by "Pendragon", MacBeth has become a hero. Sure, he was opposing Arthur for Excalibur, but he thought it could've been his turn at greatness. Not unlike Spike in "Destiny". I wouldn't call that villainous. And I don't see MacBeth grabbing Exacalibur and then going to rob a bank either.

As for Xanatos, the only time I remember him trying to kill someone was in "Cloud Fathers" when he tied Goliath and Angela to the ground and was going to pour acid(?) on them.

My favorite animated villan has to be Aku. He is a nasty kind of evil but still hilarious. I love his evil laugh.

The Joker, hands down. Stalking and making it his goal to 'break the bat' (psychologically, not physically like Bane did) and all the things he does to Bruce's friends and comrads just to get under his skin. Simply awsome.

Starscream from G1 transformers. The most treacherous villain ever. Even the other decepticons hated this guy.

Anwar
03-23-2005, 07:16 AM
Do you mean the cartoon version of Starscream, or the comic book version? The comic book version was WAY more evil than the cartoon one, his plans to take over the Cons actually WORKED in the books. I'll never forget the story where he killed off around 75% of all Autobots and Decepticons by himself...

cuon
03-23-2005, 12:34 PM
I had the cartoon version in mind, but both versions were pretty vile. In the cartoon he was planning on letting the entire Earth, along with all of the decepticons on it, explode so he could collect the energey while he was safe on cybertron. That's pretty messed up.

Anwar
03-23-2005, 02:29 PM
That wasn't so bad, there were only around 20 or so Cons on Earth compared to all the Cons on Cybertron.

In the "Ghost in the Machine" episode we saw how bad he was, he was willing to revive Unicron and destroy CYbertron (along with everyone on it, Autobot or Decepticon) just so Unicron would give him a new body.

In the comics in the "Underbase" 4-parter he tricked Scorponock's army and Ratbat's army into massacring one another (fellow Cons) so he could steal Scorponock's ship in the confsuion, he took the Underbase's power for himself and then used it to kill off around 75% of the series' cast, whether they were friends or foes.

Then in the G2 comics, he sold out his entire species to Jhiaxus and the G2 Decepticons, then he stole the Matrix and used to it become a planet sized Super-TF and starting killing everyone, his new allies and his old allies.

My favorite villain has to be The Shredder from TMNT. I enjoyed his silly side from the old TMNT show, but he definitely is an awesome villain in the comics, movies and new show. His no nonsense demeanor really makes you get a chill. And I just love his armor! I wish I could make a replica of his armor from the first movie.

I had forgotton about that ghost episode, Anyone willing to destroy their home planet and most of the members of their species for personal gain has got some serious problems.
