For the first time in years Batman has topped the comic sales chart, kicking out Wolverine's Origin, as well as the X-Men. The Dark Knight Strikes Again #1 topped the charts for a stunning victory for DC Comics, as the competitive month of December begins.
Issue #1 of The Dark Knight Strikes Again topped the December sales chart as expected, with Marvel’s Origin #5 coming in second place, the first time that series has not topped the monthly chart. Rounding out the Top Ten were, in order New X-Men #121, Uncanny X-Men #401, Ultimate X-Men #13, Amazing Spider-Man #38, Ultimate Spider-Man #16, X-Treme X-Men #8, Green Arrow #11 and Uncanny X-Men 2001.
The effects of DK2 #1, related merchandise and DC’s other efforts resulted in a split in the Market Share charts for the top 2 publishers. DC led Marvel in Dollar Share of ‘All Products’ 27.31% to 26.65%, while Marvel led in ‘Comics Magazines and Graphic Novels’ Dollar Share 35.20% to 30.97% and in the ‘Unit Share’ category 40.80% to 31.39%.
The Dark Knight Strikes Again is expected to hold the top slot through it's entire three month run. It's possible the sales of Batman: The 10 Cent Adventures may boast that series to #1 in January.
