View Full Version : Terrible Marvel Superheroes VISA Commercial

I know most of you have seen this commerical by now. It premiered during the Super Bowl, and shows a group of Marvel's most famous superheroes coming to the rescue of a VISA customer.
How in the heck did this commercial get approved by Marvel? It makes Marvel's heroes look like a bunch of losers. Spiderman sounds like a total dork, Captain America sounds like a lunkhead, and Wolverine has a visible gut. It's really rather embarrassing.

I love how Captain America just sort of erupts out of the ground. He's like a groundhog with a jetpack or something. It's really bizarre. At least it's better than the Hawkman Baby Ruth ad. Now that was terrible.

I don't know I thought it was kinda cute.

I liked that commercial. No offense, but I think you're over-reacting too much.
And what's so bad about that commercial? It gives publicity to Marvel's superheroes, including lesser-tier ones like Thor. Yeah, it's a satire, but I've seen FAR worse before, on shows like The Simpsons and Mad TV. If anything, Marvel should be more embarassed over movies like Elektra...
And besides, that commercial is the ONLY time you'll see all of Marvel's superheroes in their original costumes from the comic books (with the exception of Spider-Man, who's costume looks about the same as it does in the movies and the comic books).
If they had decided to play it straight with that commercial, most likely their costumes would have looked utterly ridiculous...

Meh, it was nothing special. Good for a laugh the first time around, but loses steam on re-airings. But you're right, Spider-Man's voice is way off. It's nasal and high-pitched, which wasn't how he sounded in both the '94 series and the new movies.

Spider-Man was supposed to sound like Tobey Maguire, but they couldn't get him and used someone who could imitate him. I thought he came close...

Underdog cameo. How can you not give it credit for an Underdog cameo?

I thought it was great. Although often executed well, the concept of super heroes "saving the day" is, let's be honest, kind of corny. A big team rushing in to help the woman was perfect and you do have to give credit for the Underdog cameo.

Personally, I think it sounds pretty cool. Wish I could see it.
Anyway, they're probably only doing it to combat Superman and American Express. :p
I thought the commercial was amusing. :) If anyone hasn't seen the commercial, it can be watched here:

I didn't think it was that bad. Yes, lame idea, but I liked it. =/

Well, they had that "Got Milk" ad. I liked it more than the Visa one. They played them straight in that one, but it didn't turn out as cheesy as it could've been.
But Cap bursting out of the ground was great.

I don't think the new VISA ad is that bad. In fact, it scores cool points for busting out Underdog at the end.

I thought it was pretty funny. I love super-hero parodies. I would rather have those commercials than commercials of bitter bratty women jumping to conclusions of what their man may be doing.
I liked the commercial, although I found it to be more funny than anything of real quality. I thought the most hilarious part was Spidey's voice, it sounded really bad. I liked how Thor looked.

I liked the commercial. It was lighthearted, sure, but what's so horrible about that? Sorta' clever by Visa, I thought.

I understand it's supposed to be silly, but why not make the heroes look cool? We're not talking about the Duff Beer guy here. Spiderman has never been that much of a dork. They should have gotten one of the cartoon voice actors to do it if they couldn't get Tobey.
And why couldn't they get bodybuilders in perfect shape? Wolverine has a visible spare tire. I don't remember Logan or Hugh Jackman ever being that chubby.
Sure it's just a commercial, but these characters are Marvel's bread and butter, and you'd think they'd treat them better.

Sure it's just a commercial, but these characters are Marvel's bread and butter, and you'd think they'd treat them better.Comedy sells better. It's far more memorable then playing something straight laced. A good example is with insurance companies, Allstate's commercials are horribly wordy and boring, I never remember the message the guy's saying...nor the point the ad was trying to convey other then 'Buy us'. Nationwide on the other hand...their commercials are HILARIOUS, and I recall everything in them.
When people chuckle, they're more apt to remember the commercial and furthermore the company the commercial was for. They really aren't treating Marvel's 'Bread and Butter' badly. They're just using their fame in a comedic fashion to sell a product.
I mean...Burt Reynolds is worth a lot of money too...but I don't see many people up in arms about him being treated badly because he got kicked in the crotch by a dancing bear in a Kinkos commercial. They think of the commercial, remember what happened in it, laugh, and spend money on the product. Its just the way advertisment works...I'm sure Marvel wasn't complaining since they probably got some royalties out of it.

Well, you know, if Wolverine really drank as much beer as he drinks in the comic he probably would have a beer gut, but of course, all superheroes have to have perfect bodies...honestly, I didn't even notice the beer gut, I was too busy trying to see all the different heroes. Did anyone recognize the two in the back that were dressed in black? I recognized Wolverine, Captain America, Thor, Spiderman, and Storm. Who were the other two?

That's another good question. I don't recognize those two or three way in the back. Who are they?

This commercial is hilarious! And cute! But yeah...I would be offended too if my favorite superheroes were portrayed in such a humiliating manner!

In the back I saw Vision, Scarlet witch, Silver Surfer, Black Panther, and that's all I could make out.

I agree. In "Got Milk", Iron Man looked SO CHEESY it was funny. And so did Hawkeye. His arrows were rubber! This one was weird. Cap bursting out of the ground? Funny, but I was too distracted by whoever those guys were in the background.
In the back I saw Vision, Scarlet witch, Silver Surfer, Black Panther, and that's all I could make out.
I don't think that was the Silver Surfer, it was a guy in silver armor or something. And you saw Vision and Scarlet Witch? Maybe I'm not looking hard enough.

There's a tall black guy in the back wearing a ridiculously oversized black helmet, and some black woman next to him (not Storm). No idea who they are.

*GASP* We have destroyed the dignity of fictional characters! Oh noes!
Meh, I thought it was kind of funny. But then, compared to the halftime show, everything looked good. Even the Eagles' second-half performance.

I think the commercial is hilarious. Yeah, it's cheesy, and Spider-Man tries too much to sound like Tobey McGuire, but it's just friggin' cool to see all those charcters (even obscure ones who haven't make it to the silver screen yet) coming together to save one person and her check card. Underdog's cameo was a plus too. :anime:
