View Full Version : What can banned people do?

I'm not eager to find out from personal experience, so I thought I'd ask.

1. Can they still log in under their user name?
A while back I saw someone with a name that caught my interest listed on the front page where it says who's online. When I checked his profile it said banned, and he looked banned. Lot's of activity up to a certain point, then nothing.

2. Can they check their PM box?
I know you can't send them anymore PM's after they're banned, but what if you've sent them a PM in the morning, in the afternoon they're banned, and then they log in for the first time that day in the evening? Do they ever see those messages? What happens to your conformation request if their PM box is deleted?

3. Can they still receive Email from other members after they're banned?
I figure it's a different system from PM'ing and it still may get forwarded.

4. I'm asking too many questions. I'm just asking for it aren't I? And using that sticks out tongue smilie is just aggravating the situation, isn't it? :p

All I know is, they can't post anymore. They can visit the site all they want, they just can't post.

From my experience with forum systems, when a user is banned they usually cannot log in, but are able to recieve Emails from members via their profile. Their username and all their details are kept safe until they are unbanned. But yeah, they definately can't post or PM.

At most forums I go to, banned users can't even look at the forum.

Of course, that is on phpBB forums, so it's probably different. I also know from experience, so that also helps.

On this forum, you can look at the posts without being logged in. So if you're banned from logging in you can still look. Unless they ban your IP too, in which case all the vBulletin areas will block you.

But that's what happens on phpBB, which is all I know. They shouldn't have too many difference though.

If you delete your cookies, IP banned members can view the boards

it all has to do with staying logged in

D'oh!
I'm not trying to find out how to get around things,
I was just curious like it says in question 1, and I was wondering if messages get through.

Actually the system keeps them logged in so they don't re-register, don't know if that goes for everyone. I don't think they can actually do anything though.

I'm not 100% sure what the full list is, but they can still email via the forum I think, they can't send PMs (and I think maybe their PMs are deleted when banned...not sure on that eiether) nor can they browse forums. I think they're pretty much reduced to "guest" state...

If you ever get banned from a forum, you can always create your own forum, and ban a bunch of poor saps there. You can taste the sweet nectar of revenge to cancel out the bitter taste of banishment from another forum. :D

I sort of had this weird idea for creating a new forum called "The Big House," where it's a forum that Banned people can post on, but non-banned people can't. It would be like the prison of toonzone, and good behavior can earn your way out or something. It would atleast be funny to watch!

When it comes to banned members, my rule has generally been: "Speak not of the dead"

You can be unbanned?

You can be unbanned? I think I read in an FAQ here that there is a such thing as being temporarily banned, like for a day or two, mainly as a warning for disruptive behavior. The thing is, I've never seen it used. It's pretty much an all or nothing kind of deal.

There aren't many situations that call for it, but I have used blocking (temp banning) a few times. Most of those involve underage users (ban 'em 'til their thirteenth birthday).

As far as I'm aware, PM's cannot be sent to banned members. I believe you get a "this member is not accepting PM's" message.

As for removal of bans, it's technically possible, but rare. Bans are last resorts, so if you've got to that point, there will be a load of incidences which resulted in that situation. Therefore, finding a singular reason why a moderator should ignore those multiple issues and reinstate a member is very very rare.

I think that's the thing to remember. Unless you are just an out and out spammer, you don't just get BANNED. We are in contact with you several times before then - check the warning procedure in the FAQ.

I've noticed that one of the biggest misconception among members (and probably from experience elsewhere) that if they step out of line once, or speak their mind, they'll be banned.

Doesn't happen, and all bannings are recorded in detail with the relevant information to back it up. So those who I know do worry about being banned/banned secretly - don't. :) We have watchers who watch the watchers.

The CIA.

Seriously though, moderators are accountable not only to the administrators and site owners of the forum but also to each other. I wouldn't want to work with someone who was a loose cannon and couldn't be counted on to act decisively and objectively. And honestly, the admin staff and site owners wouldn't allow someone like that to continue in a moderator position.

Yeah. Honestly we have this real ass of a moderator on DCAF who's constantly closing these threads and he just won't stop. He's a real jerk. I'd love to see him go...

...Wait...

Just adding to what SJJ said--we don't outright ban. Spammers we do and there have been occasions in the past where outright bans have happened, but rarely are they permanent. They're usually done as a safe-guard in case the member goes beserk while a moderator can discuss it with others or clean up the mess.

In the event that you are outright banned--you must've been a reaaaaaaaly big jerk.

Like that moderator on DCAF who has no sense of humor.

Like that moderator on DCAF who has no sense of humor. Which one? There are so many?

...

... and so many with no sense of humour.

Joking guys... or am I? Well lacking a sense of humour, you lot wouldn't know either way. :p

Yeah, the watchers watch the watchers watching the watchers. Everything is out in the open and any action we take regarding a member is filed with evidence and an explanation to why. We document everything thoroughly, which means a lot of paperwork.

So if you don't believe in our integrity when it comes to banning, you can rest assured that the process is so longwinded, unless it was essential, no one could be bothered to do it on a whim. ;)
