Out of all of these, I picked Return of the Jedi.

I have to go with Dante from Clerks on this one...Empire.
Mainly for the same reasons he gave in the movie, it's the most depressing and darkest overall.

THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK. My favorite of them, and I do believe the best. JEDI is a close second, though, followed by A NEW HOPE.

The mighty ESB followed by New Hope. Hopefully Revenge... will come out on top.
Easily A New Hope is my favorite Star Wars movie. Probably the most well-rounded film of the original trilogy. Meeting Obi-Wan, saving Leia, destroying the Death Star. Just a very entertaining, well told movie.
I'd probably then have Empire and ATOC right behind it, these two both had some flaws in my eyes so I couldn't put either in front of the other.

I felt Empire was the tightest when it came to pacing, plus it has the most Yoda (or at least, the most old-good-puppet-Yoda), so that got my vote. The OT films are really close in my estimation, though, as they've all got something good to offer that the others lack. ANH had Tarkin, RotJ had the best OT lightsabre fight and the best space battle in EITHER trilogy, etc.

Why, Episode III: A Lost Hope of course...

Empire is RIDICULOUSLY over-rated imo, it's second best, tied with AOTC I'd say...but it is just not as well rounded as ANH and it's definitely not far superior to every other one like some critics would say. A New Hope was like the perfect 1940 swashbuckler...well aside from the lame ass saber fight it had compared to the ones in 1 and 2. I thought 2 was fun, acting definitely needed work...Ms. Portman get over yourself cuz you SUCK in Star Wars...but it was fun. Here's hoping ROTS will take #1!

I think Return of the Jedi.
I'll sum up the pros and cons of all the movies.... because I'm bored
Phantom Meance
+
Loved the lightsaber battle with the flips and stuff
Darth Maul was so cool
The battle between Gun-Gans and Droids was so cool!
It had the amazing podrace
-
Jar Jar - I just wanna kill 'im
A bit to wordy
I just wanted Anikin to shut up most of the time
Attack of the Clones
+
Brilliant performance by Ewan McGregor
Yoda VS Tyrannas was so cool!
Natlie Portman was hot
Best action sences in genral
Jango Fett was in it a lot
The ending battle was stunning
-
Count Douku kinda sucked...
I still want Anikin to shut up
A bit corny at times
The storyline was a bit wobbly
A New Hope
+
The Death Star bit was awsome
I think it had the most stable storyline
-
Really, really, really, really corny
The lightsaber battle at the end was pretty dull
Seems very dated now
Empire Stikes Back
+
The City in the sky was really cool
Had the best pace to it
I AM your father
-
The ending kinda sucked
A bit on the slow side
Return of the Jedi
+
Leia was really hot in her Bikini!
The Ewoks were sooooo funny
The starship scene was really amazing
Most emotinal film without getting soppy / stupid
_
Leia was only in her Bikini for about half an hour :(

Am I allowed to vote if I've only seen the new ones so far? If that's the case, then I'd go for Phantom Menance because it was a FAR better movie than ATOC, even with Jar-Jar.
Though, from what I've heard, I'd pick the second (fifth?) movie because ewoks are scary.

"From what you've heard"
uhh, you should only vote for a movie youve seen

Nice format. I'll bite again.
Phantom Meance
+
Looked very beautiful.
Darth Maul was amusingly split in two.
It had the amazing podrace
-
The film was a pastiche of older SW moments (Speeder Bikes, Lightsabre duels, Death Star battles,,
Jar Jar... a character should be able to interact with the enviroment in a comical way and not be a "comic" character written into the enviroment. Stuck out like a sore thumb.
Anakin was too nice and too "Hollywood Child" for the 90s.
There was very little character dynamic. Jedi are, quite frankly, boring heroes as their code makes them so focused and unemotive. Having two as your main leads is suicidal when it comes to drama.
The Gungan battle was AWFUL. No one tied and Jar Jar made the mockery of the bravery of those people who fight overwhelming odds in risk of their lives.
Attack of the Clones
+
Ewan had more to do.
Yoda training the Jedi kids gave you an idea how far behind Luke was.
Looked very nice again.
Jar Jar is a key instrument which ruins the galaxy.
Anakin going crazy on the Tuskens.
-
Anakin was awful. Had zero charm and nothing which warmed the viewer. The whole idea is to paint him as a tragic character and he comes off as a salacious and sulky teenager which I doubt someone like Padme would like.
The chemistry between Anakin and Padme was painful. Compared to some of the other romances of the summer, their delivery and chemistry was very poor.
The scene with 3P0 in the factory area was awful.
Yoda managed to make me cry with laughter in his fight which I don't think was the intent.
A New Hope
+
A fantastic and inovative use of science fiction and it's history
Characters with dynamic and actors with chemistry.
A simple and flowing storyline, not complicated and irrelevant as much of the pre-trilogy.
Great end battle.
Some great and memorable lines.
-
Well now... Greedo shoots first!
Aliens look a bit poor.
Aside from that.. there is a reason this is considered one of the better films of the 20th Century...
Empire Stikes Back
+
The real first mainstream sequel to utterly alter tone.
Great spot battles and action.
Characters remain true and interesting.
Fantastic surprise resolution.
The good guys lose.
Yoda a strong character.
Fantastic score
-
The Yoda scenes did drag compared to the pacing of the rest of the movie.
Boba Fett was introduced and for some unknown reason, because a god of fandom.
Return of the Jedi
+
Emperor was a great character.
Great end battle for Luke.
Yoda's gentle death.
-The film lacks flow. It feels like a film of two totally seperate parts.
They repeat the Death Star.. was that REALLY needed?
Han is an idiot throughout.
Jabba was a little clunky as a puppet.
Ewoks were stupid and no way offer any effective threat to trained (and elite) imperial Stormtroopers.
The Leia/Luke scene is realllly static.
Am I allowed to vote if I've only seen the new ones so far?
Wow, it's not often you hear about Star Wars fans who have viewed Episodes I & II but not Episodes IV-VI. It will be interesting to hear your views on IV-VI (since you are one of the first who will see the series in I-VI order, the way it was meant to be seen).

SJJ, It shocked me to see Phantom Menace at the top of your list,
but then I realized it's just to match the story timeliine.
At least I hope so.
Many good points, I normally find myself in close agreement with your opinions of Sci-fi.
Anyhow, I vote for Empire Strikes Back.
I loved it as a kid and as I got older I just kept finding more love.
As a kid I was impressed by Walkers and keeping warm inside a Taun-taun.
Currently I'm into the day in the life in service of the Empire aspect, where if you're lucky the man in black will have too much on his mind to notice or kill you.
A New Hope, I still refer to it just as "Star Wars."
Made a huge impact on me and one of my all time favorite movies.
Maybe I'll go into more detail later.
I'll just add that I liked the Gendy Tarkovsky cartoons more the episode 1 and 2.

Oh, good point. Guess I'll tell my friends to put off that IV-VI marathon till after I see III then. :D
But yes, I am in the minority of haven't seen the originals at all. I get picked on it everyday.

Sorry I didn't clarify the actual answer to the question. It is ESB for me. Definately the best, followed by ANH. Always nice to find someone with mutual opinions! *bow*
ESB, definitely.
Though I'm hoping RotS can top it.

I'm doing my list starting with favorite then going to least favorite.
Return of the Jedi for me. I don't know, I just thought the forest planet with the ewoks was really cool. And the ending was actually pretty good with them burining all the bodies. Another upside was the luke/Darth Vader fight scene. I really can't think of anything that wasn't noticable bad about the movie.
Phantom Menace comes in a close second. Why? Because I believe Darth Maul is the coolest villan they've created thus far. And the race was also really cool, and unlike everyone else, I thought Jar Jar was great
Empire Strikes Back is third because it has the most action of them all, but while watching the series for the first time the ending really threw me off. But the city was a plus, along with everything else in the movie.
A New Hope was a pretty good way to start off the series, but it feels dated and bland when I watch it now when compared to the later ones. The Death Star was cool here, as was the battles. But the pacing really felt off, either they were going too fast or too slow.
And finally Attack of the Clones. ultimitley I did not enjoy this movie. This si because the yoda fight was hilarious, which it shouldn't have been. The way Bobba Fett died was also poor, I thought it would be better then thought. And the whole love angle was not enjoyable to watch.

Hard call. I mean, I really like A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back, but I think I will go for Return of the Jedi.
Maybe it's pure nostalgia or something, but it was always my favorite growing up and that just stayed with me. I love how complete a story A New Hope is, and I love how Empire completely leaves the heroes just kicked in the you-know-whats at the end, but for some reason, Jedi just remains at the top of the list.
I think I like the ending battle, the Ewoks, and the Luke-Vader-Emperor duel at the end. Oh, and I liked the fight on Tantooine with Leia in the bikini, mainly because she fights and chokes Jabba to death herself, and doesn't need someone to do it for her.
Hmmmm, I think I'll wrap it up now. :)

Return of the Jedi, I'm not sure why though, it might be the cute ewoks or just a great plot in general. Even though I nearly fell asleep while watching it the last time I saw it, mainly because it was 12:00 at night and I was having a star wars marathon with a friend.
I also liked the Phantom menace because of the pod race. And I liked Jar Jar. :D

The Empire Strikes Back was definitely the best movie out of the series. The plot and the battles were set up perfectly. My favorite movie when I was a kid. I remember when my friend had a star wars b-day party about 8 years ago, and we got these toy light sabers. Me and my friends played around with those for weeks.
Return of The Jedi and Attack of The Clones fall under the same category. They were pretty good, but got boring often. The Yoda fight and Vader defying the Emperor were some great surprises.
A New Hope and The Phantom Menace weren't really that great. They were okay, but they sure got boring at times.
Really looking forward to the final Star Wars movie.

The Phantom Menace
Liked:
The different backdrops for the story/action: Naboo, the underwater Gungan realm, Tatooine, Coruscant (finally!). As has been mentioned, it's a visually beautiful film.
Seeing the Senate and Palpatine's machinations.
Seeing Jedi in their prime in action. Enjoyed the TF reaction to Qui-gon pressing through the blast doors with his saber, and then a moment later seeing him and Kenobi takeoff down the hallway at inhuman speed to escape the battle droids.
Early scenes featuring the TF leaders in contact with holographic Sidious. I especially loved the appearance of Maul and the TF duo's shock at there now being two Sith Lords. Every scene with Sidious was
great.
The end stuff, especially the Maul vs Obi-wan and Qui-gon battle, which was simply exhilirating to watch, and the Amidala-led effort to capture the viceroy. It was also cool to see the sheer number of
droids and the gungan army which could actually represent a possible threat unlike the ewoks.
Yoda and Mace contemplating the possibility of the Master still being out there (and the accompanying camera movement).
Disliked:
The space battle was too slick and special-effecty. There was nothing there I could truly appreciate.
Jake Lloyd had some cringe-worthy delivery during that battle.
Attack of the Clones
Liked:
The Tusken slaughter and the scenes just before and after it. Anakin's building rage as he held his mother and the release moments later as executed two quick beheadings was well done. And I absolutely
loved the dazed, withdrawn look Yoda turned toward Mace following the Force tremor he sensed. "Young Skywalker is in pain...terrible pain." One of the highlights of the entire saga for me. I also found Skywalker's revelation of slaughter to Padme powerful. Hayden carried himself well during the build-up to that tragedy and in the scenes following.
Obi-wan vs Jango. Great setting and well-filmed fight.
Obi-wan's arrival at Kamino and the discovery he was expected. Chilling and mysterious. I liked the investigative aspect of the story as Obi-wan tracked Jango. Discoveries, like this one, were great.
Some of the shots of the clone army incredibly dramatic. Obi-wan overlooking the army at Kamino as Williams score climaxed with the Kaminoan commenting "Impressive, aren't they" was a particular favorite. Even better was the Chancellor and company overlooking
the armies as they boarded the ships with the Williams music moving into the Imperial March. Great stuff.
The lightsaber duels. Like TPM, very well choreographed. Fun to watch. Liked the use of darkness during the dooku/anakin bit, bringing out the
red and blue of their sabers.
Jedi vs droids, clones vs droids, jedi-led clones vs droids...all incredibly fun.
Loved Williams score for this one.
Loved the atmosphere
Disliked:
There was some clunky, overly wordy dialogue, such as between Obi-wan and Anakin during the chase through Coruscant.
Disliked the whiny aspect of Anakin's character. I'm not sure why Lucas wanted that. Perhaps to contrast with a more mature Anakin in epIII.
A New Hope
Liked:
Interaction between Han and anyone. Great character.
The opening visual of the seemingly neverending Star Destroyer.
Just about everything with Vader. My favorite was the scene on the Death Star: "Don't be too proud of this technological terror you've constructed. The ability to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of the Force." The dialogue exchange between Vader and that admiral was great.
Dialogue between Obi-wan and Vader on the DS.
Disliked:
Battle between Obi-wan and Vader. Just lame.
Climax didn't do a whole lot for me. Nothing wrong with it, but I just never found the whole attack on the DS particularly exciting.
Greedo shooting first. Or at the same time. Or whatever. Sorry, but I won't accept that. Ever. Han shoots first, end of story.
Empire Strikes Back
Likes:
grim, gloomy atmosphere
Luke's initial encounter with Yoda. Darn funny.
Vader's fury at the fleet coming in too soon at Hoth.
Han and the rest entering that room on Cloud City to find Vader waiting for them.
Vader's communication with the Emperor.
Luke vs Vader and the big revelation.
Luke and Vader in contact through the Force after that. "Father?" "Son." "Ben, why didn't you tell me." The pain Luke was feeling...great scene. Doesn't get much better than this.
Dislikes: Hmm. Nothing really.
Return of the Jedi
Likes:
Luke's arrogance and cockiness during the Han rescue attempt
Leia in that metal bikini. Gotta mention that, right?
Space battle - best of the saga thus far.
Han and Lando as generals
Emperor's surprise that he hadn't sensed Luke on the moon while Vader had. Perhaps this when he decided to get rid of Vader over fear of the connection between father and son?
Luke vs Vader before the Emperor.
Luke standing over the fallen Vader, seeing the severed hand, looking at his own gloved hand, and realizing he was on the path, becoming like his Father. And the decision that led him to: "You've failed, your Highness..."
Vader and Luke before going before the Emperor. "It is too late for me, my son." Loved that line. That was Anakin speaking.
Vader's conflict and then acting to save his son.
Disliked:
Ewoks. That battle against Imperial forces seriously undermined the Empire as a threat. They're supposed to be this unstoppable force that has the galaxy enslaved, yet they can't defeat teddy bears with
sticks and stones. Just not believable. Doesn't do much for the Rebellion, either, as you have to wonder why they haven't won yet based on the Empires sad display against the teddy bears.
The movie didn't flow well. There was the beginning (rescue at Jabba's) and then the whole rest of the movie (efforts to stop the second DS).
Second DS. Would have rather seen the final Vader/Luke battle take some new location we hadn't seen. One thing I had badly wanted to see during the OT was whatever planet the Emperor operated from...wherever the Imperial palace or HQ was. That turned out to be Coruscant and its too bad we couldn't have seen it here.
So what's the best movie? Empire Strikes Back. But my personal favorite is Attack of the Clones. There were more scenes in that movie that stood out to me, more details that I loved, and I ultimately enjoyed watching it more than any of the others.

Return of the Jedi is definitely my favorite. Honestly, I think Empire Strikes Back was a bit overrated. Good, but overrated. And maybe I'm weird, but I thought Jar-Jar was the best part of Phantom Menace. Episodes 1 and 2 have just been meh, but I'm hoping RotS breaks that streak.
My order of favorites would have to be: 6,4,5,1,2. I enjoyed them all, but RotJ has always been my favorite.

Return of the Jedi because it had Ewoks. And they had an entire Ewok village. I collected all of the Ewok figures and playsets when I was little. And wished I lived in an Ewok village.
