View Full Version : Where would you hold a convention, Metropolis or Gotham City?

Back in the 1950's, the old Superman-Batman teamup title "World's Finest Comics" printed a story called (IIRC) "The Contest Between Metropolis and Gotham City," where some large scientific organization wanted to hold a huge convention where various highly advanced and valuable scientific gadgets would be displayed, but they couldn't decide whether to hold the convention in Metropolis or Gotham City. Metropolis' city council tried to sell them on Superman being there, while Gotham's council touted that they not only had a larger convention center than Metropolis', but also Batman and Robin. The organization decides to let both cities' heroes win it out, by trading cities (Superman in Gotham, Batman and Robin in Metropolis) and whoever solved the most crimes in each others' home turf within a day or two would win the convention for their city. IIRC, Batman won out (via secretly manipulating the whole thing as a plot to stop some crooks/save Superman's life, or somesuch)...
Cheesy little tale (drawn, IIRC, by the legendary Batman artist Dick Sprang), but I still liked it (if you don't like Batman as anything other than his current persona, you probably won't, though). And it raised an interesting poll question (well, more interesting than "can Batman beat the entire population of Denver with enough time to prepare?"/"is Slade really the Justice Lords' Bruce in disguise?"/whatever):
Given the choice, which of these two cities would *you* want to hold a convention in?
I'd probably choose Metropolis, though admit that at least in Gotham, I'd probably worry less about, say, Kalibak or Lobo or whoever deciding to use the entire city as a giant wrestling mat with Supes...

Definately Metropolis. I bet they have much better hotels.

Given the choice, which of these two cities would *you* want to hold a convention in?I'd have to say Gotham City. Yes, it's the "dirtier" city and all, but I'd much rather be in a city where Joker and Two-Face are going around committing crimes than a city which attracts the attention and scorn of Kryptonian alien would-be dictators, a man who controls the weather, alien Gods from Apokolips, a man who absorbs other people's powers, a man made of an indestructable alloy, and a crooked business emperor, just to name a few off the top of my head.
I guess I'd be safer on a "normal" day in Metropolis than I would be in Gotham City, but if a big-name villain strikes from each hero's respective rogues gallery, there would probably be less large-scale danger in Gotham.

I've seen too much BTAS, STAS, and JL/U to want to hold a convention in either city. In the DCAU, holding the convention in L.A. would probably be much safer.

Metropolis' "World of Tomorrow"-like atmosphere and design makes it more perfect for holding conventions.

Fun-filled topic!
I guess the theme of the convention matters. If it were a convention unveiling the latest developments in tech, Metropolis wins. It really is the City of Tomorrow. Gotham might win if it were more for fine arts or natural history.
Of course, both cities have drawbacks. Gotham is more corrupt, and has more crime, petty and organized. Metropolis is so much safer, but for whatever reason, the Omega-level alien threats keep thinking that Metropolis is the place to attack. Don't they know Superman lives there? :p

Why would Bruce attack Robin as Slade? :ack: I also think, that Metropolis the
sun-shiny city of Superman is better suited for a convention (and it's not because of Superman) then dark, gloomy Gotham.

Both cities are equally dangerous -- if you're dead then you're dead, whether by Joker's poision gas or Kalibak throwing a bridge on top of you. Though, I'd probably say the insurance is cheaper in Gotham City than Metropolis, due to the fact that Joker & Two-Face simply aren't capable of doing the kind of damage that Darkseid & Brainiac are capable of. :p
Then again, we're assuming that Joker would never go to Metropolis, or Brainiac to Gotham City... :anime:

Gotham. No evil aliens to worry about. Still very dangerous though.

Okay, so if I were holding a convention, it would likely be a comic book convention. So, both cities would be fitting places.
I'd pick Metropolis because I'd probably just enjoy visiting there more. Also, the odds are less that the supervillians will specifically target my convention. The bat-villians are so demented that your convention may set them off in some way that they'd decide to crash the party and cause a lot of trouble. The super-villians are usually after bigger things and will probably only crash through the convention hall by accident.

You're just inviting the Joker to up the destruction aren't you? Last time we saw him, he planted dozens of bombs in Vegas.
I'd say Metropolis.
