Last week General Manager Theodore Long announced a tournament to determine who would face the WWE Champion at WrestleMania 21. Booker T won his match while Eddie Guerrero, René Duprée, and The Undertaker were all eliminated from the tournament. Tonight we saw John Cena, Orlando Jordan, Rey Mysterio, and Kurt Angle compete in Japan in quarterfinal matches. Which superstars were able to stay alive in the tournament?

FEB. 10, 2005
The special 8-man No. 1 Contender Tournament will continue overseas as SmackDown! heads to the land of the rising sun.
In quarterfinal action, Orlando Jordan will take on United States Champion John Cena and Rey Mysterio will face Kurt Angle.
The Cena/Jordan winner would face Booker T in the semifinals at No Way Out. The Mysterio/Angle winner will get a bye straight into the final match, also at No Way Out, since Undertaker and Renee Dupree ended with a double countout last week.
Meanwhile, will Carlito’s petition finally come back to haunt the embattled GM Theodore Long? Don’t miss the first-ever SmackDown! produced in Japan.
Tune in on Thursday (8/7) CT on UPN.

They should've had Kenzo as the face this week, and have him wrestle JBL. But they didn't. Too bad, there would've been some great skits with Kenzo and JBL.
Speaking of JBL, pretty funny bit this week with the tranqulizer gun. I think this is how Amy Weber will be written out, if she does leave the WWE as the reports say. I wouldn't be surprised if Joy Giovanni becomes the Image Consultant, in a Russo-fric swerve. She could say that Big Show ruined her marriage or something. Or they could move Candice Michelle from RAW and have her join the Cabinet. She does need a big role, since she is getting more notice as the Go daddy.com model from the Super Bowl commercials.
Funaki had his best match in a long time against Chavo. That was the most over he's ever been in his WWE tenure.
Another funny Wrestlemania commercial. Good Basic Instinct parody, though that was the weakest parody so far.
With 10 days left till No Way Out, we only have a grand total of 3 matches so far. With Taker/Reigns added tonight. Not very good booking at all.
Awesome main event. Probably the best Smackdown match in a long time. So in all likelhoods, it will be Angle vs. Cena at No Way Out, in Angle's hometown of Pittsburgh.
Decent Smackdown.

Eddie versus Kenzo was a pretty lousy opening match. They didn't have much time, but even Eddie couldn't drag Kenzo to a good match. The one thing I did enjoy about this match was the crowd's reaction to Kenzo.
Well they sure did telegraph that Undertaker appearance. First you have Reigns cut a promo about how he's not afraid of Taker and then you have match between two unpopular heel tag teams? Who couldn't see that coming?
Funaki and Chavo put on a good match, probably Funaki's best ever. It was a little slow, but that's okay because the fast-paced cruiserweight match will be on Velocity tonight.
Cena and Jordan put on a decent match. I liked Cena's rap before the match, but that was only because he made a Naked Gun reference.
Torrie versus Hiroko was a waste of time. I just saw this "match" a few months ago. I'm still trying to figure out how anybody can believe that they can embarrass somebody who has posed naked in Playboy by stripping them down to their underwear.
I thought JBL's in-ring segment was the worst part of the show. It was just long and boring. WrestleMania can't come soon enough.
Angle and Mystrio in the main event was not only the match of the night, but one of the best matches I've seen this year. I guess that shouldn't be too surprising considering who was involved. The ending was especially good with Mysterio getting a lot of near-falls.
So we have one more show before No Way Out and the only announced matches are JBL versus Big Show, Undertaker versus Luther Reigns, and Kurt Angle versus John Cena or Booker T. Where's the undercard? Why are there no matches for Mysterio, Eddie, the Bashams, or Funaki?

Well, this was the first time that I've watched Smackdown in months, and after the near flawless Raw from Japan, I was wondering how Smackdown would do, and needless to say, it made it very evident that Raw is by far the stronger of the two shows. The opening match was horrid, I can't believe that Suzuki isn't in OVW right now. The Bradshaw spots were incredibly awful, as was the Cena rap and match, I can't see him being World champion at all, even though there's no where to go but up with Bradshaw as champion. Outside of the Main Event nothing else was any good. And since they were in Japan, why not put Paul London and Kidman in there, or put Eddie with a quality oponent since he did used to wrestle in Japen as Black Tiger. Needless to say, I won't be watching Smackdown again anytime soon.
