Since I know a lot of people here are likely Ren and Stimpy fans, I thought I'd let you know I just read at Jerry Beck's site that R&S will be returning to TV, starting this Friday! VH-1 will show a seven-episode marathon Friday night, and then an episode will air every night at Midnight through the end of the year. Also, each episode will be hosted by Billy West, who will provide some behind-the-scenes tidbits on the making of the episode.

John K probably won't be participating, but it sounds really interesting nonetheless. I'm excited just to see R&S again. Even the later, Games-produced episodes were much better than most of the original junk on Nick and CN.

Does this mean VH1 will play the episodes UNCUT??? I'm hoping for some more uncut first season classics for my collection. :)

I love Ren and Stimpy! But I was wondering, why VH-1? VH-1 may be one of my favorite networks, but that makes no sense! I hope you are all prepared for Pop-Up Ren and Stimpy folks!

P.S. Nickelodeon is full of eeeeeediots!

Pete, the reason why R&S is gonna be shown on VH-1 is because Nickeledeon and VH-1 are both owned by Viacom, so that means R&S can be shown on Nick's sister network.

P.S. I'm sorry fo what has happened. God Bless.

First and belatedly, my heartfelt condolences on your Grandmother's passing. Know that you are joined in prayer and thought Out Here.

As for Ren & Stimpy, actually, VH-1 makes a great deal of sense. A few years back, MTV, its other sister network, was running R&S marathons even during the waning stages of the Nickelodeon series run. And that meant, among other things, the original uncut John K. episodes, including the uncensored "Powdered Toast Man"! So cheers to Vh-1, and let us hope. (Just don't hope too much for ever seeing "Man's Best Friend," which still can be found only in gray market VHS tape land.)

Someone is gonna have to give me all the Ren and Stimpy info. What happened between Spumco and Nick? Why doesn't Ren and Stimpy air anymore? When Nick tried to air it again, why were some scenes edited? What was wrong with Powdered Toast Man?
-Now, I have a theory: Powdered Toast Man was edited because of his trademark phrase "Cling tenaciously to my buttocks!" My theory is that the phrase had hidden sexual meaning or something.
-Also, are there any episodes that absolutely CANNOT BE AIRED for any reason? I know there was one episode that had a song about hanging people. The song's in MP3 format, but I've never seen the episode. Will someone please post all the info you have?

OK... (1) What happened between Spumco and Nick could fill a small book (the gist of it was corporate meddling with storyboards, resultant missed deadlines, and Nickelodeon's general allergy to "pushing the envelope").

(2) What was really wrong with "Powdered Toast Man" according to Nick was Frank Zappa's original onscreen billing "as the Pope" (no lie!) and the closing gag in which PTM tossed the Constitution and Bill of Rights into the White House fireplace (ditto!!). Both somehow made it onto Nick once ... and only once. But happily, MTV still used the original version in its marathons.

(2a) Sorry to mess with your theory, but the "buttocks" line stayed in both versions ... Nick already had bigger fish to fry.

(3) The one episode I know of (maybe there were others?) that could never be aired at all was, again, "Man's Best Friend." Two reasons: George Liquor, who is now John K's exclusive property, and maybe the more crucial excuse by Nick: Ren has never been done as more psychotic and violent than in this short (trust me on this one, I own one of those grey market copies!). In the immortal words of Groucho Marx, "now that's what's known as a waste of film."

It's a long story. For all the info on the Spumco/Nick fiasco read these three pages:

As for the Powdered Toast Man story, read here:

FIRRRRST

I gotta say it....here it comes.....

HAPPY HAPPY JOY JOY!

I did tape most R&Ss('cept near the end), but it'll still be good to see them this way.

second...

The main cut in the Powdered Toast Man cartoon is when PTM, as acting president, burns the original US Constitution to light a fire in the fire place.

Even if they air uncut, I can't be sure if that scene'll remain unscathed in the current climate. I hope they keep it. It could stand as a satire of John Ashcroft imho. I'm pro-this-war, and the scene doesn't offend me!

I watched most of last night's episode, and got the cartoons I needed on tape at SP. There was no "Pop-Up" crap, but there were some unusually large network IDs. Here's what VH1 showed:

Show 1:

Space Madness
The Boy Who Cried Rat

Show 2:

Robin Hoek
Nurse Stimpy

Show 3:

Stimpy's Big Day
The Big Shot

Show 4:

Fire Dogs
The Littlest Giant

The big downside is that the second half of each show was cut into TWO PARTS!!!

On the bright side, all of last night's cartoons were from the first season! :)

Why did'nt they show Stimpy's Invention?

Don't worry, they'll probably show it soon when R&S comes on weeknights at midnight.

Because they aired the first four Ren and Stimpy episodes. Stimpy's Invention/Black Hole was the last show of the first season.

A few nits though

1) The theme song was only included with Stimpy's Big Day/The Big Shot. So much for complete shows

2) Some of the opening of Space Madness was cut. Why?

3) VH-1 really dony know what they're doing with those strange intros. Man, Billy West is skeevy.

And they're only airing some of the bumper segments. What's that about? :(

Ren and Stimpy aired on VH-1 becasue both it and MTV are Viacom properties...but also, most or all of the shorts used a classical music piece in it's score--Tchaikovsky, for example, appeared in "Robin Hoek". It might be interesting to do give that treatment to old Looney Tunes shorts, and modern incarnations like Tiny Toon Adventures. Animaniacs, and Pinky and the Brain, dissecting Stalling and Stone scores.
My only regret is that I'd seen all these shorts before. I'm hoping to see some I'd missed next week, though.
Useless fact: West used to work for Howard Stern's radio show before he made it big on his own as a v/o actor.
