View Full Version : The Bright Side of JLU

Let's face it...we're critical. To what extent varies from person to person, but I feel like for all my occasional complaints, I should do something to show b.t. and the crew behind the show that there are many little things I really appreciate having seen happen on JLU. Feel free to join in :)
Thank you for using Circe! I was hoping she'd make an appearance on JL since it began, and within the first six episodes of JLU, I not only got to see her, but Ares as well. Those were really nice surprises.
I was most especially pleased (believe it or not) to see the bystanders in "Wake the Dead" erupted at Shayera. It's always nice to see writers try and continue ideas that were introduced, and I was worried that the mistrust between Hawkgirl and humanity was going to be glossed over. Instead, you've built upon that idea, which is really rewarding for those of us who enjoy the longer arcs.
Finally, I really loved that camera shot which featured several of the JLU blasting Amazo as he approached earth in "The Return". Great effects work and smoothe character animation.
I could go on, but I'm curious to know what about JLU has really put a smile on other viewers' faces...

Um, everything, in my case. It makes me smile that the show exists and is on and that new episodes are forthcoming. I prefer JLU to all the previous DC animated shows -- it's the series I've been waiting for since I walked with my Dad to the drugstore on Sundays as a kid in the 70s, to pick up the latest issue of Brave & Bold or Justice League off the spinner rack.

The Animation in general. The characters. I'm glad JLU has all those different superheroes, it makes the show more fun to watch. I'm glad Shayera is back, it will be interesting to see league's reaction toward her, especially John's. :anime:
Thank you, for continuing Justice League. It's definetly a Good show that needs to stay on the air for a really loooooong time! :D

I was most especially pleased (believe it or not) to see the bystanders in "Wake the Dead" erupted at Shayera. It's always nice to see writers try and continue ideas that were introduced, and I was worried that the mistrust between Hawkgirl and humanity was going to be glossed over. Instead, you've built upon that idea, which is really rewarding for those of us who enjoy the longer arcs.I *loved* this. I just in general love the way Shayera has been handled in her appearances - I love that the events in Starcrossed affected her so deeply, and that we get to see it. I loved the chess game with Aquaman, as well, and his impatience with her bleakness.
I also loved the episode "The Return" - Amazo was one of the only one-shot characters from the first two seasons of JL that really stuck with me because of the way his character evolved so intriguingly over the course of just that one episode. Lex Luthor has also been an interesting character over the course of the seasons, and revisiting the Lex/Amazo dynamic (as well as the Lex/JL dynamic) worked really well here. This was one episode where the excess superheroes also worked for me, too. It didn't matter that I didn't know their comic-based backgrounds, and it didn't matter if I grew to know them enough to care about them; their presence served only to show what their powers were, and how all their powers combined weren't enough against Amazo. It was pretty cool to watch.
The Once and Future Thing pt 1 was a really fun episode - fantastic humor. As soon as Wonder Woman delivered the line "These are the biggest, slowest bullets I have ever seen," I knew I was going to have fun watching. The old west superheroes were a trip; and the whacked robots and weaponry the bad guy came up with at the end cracked me up.
I enjoyed For the Man Who Has Everything for the character moments between 'the big three.' It wasn't the strongest episode, but I liked seeing that easy comeraderie between Batman and Wonder Woman, and the connection Batman, Wonder Woman and Superman share on some level, despite their inherent differences. I really am a sucker for character eps, I admit it.

Green Arrow is a more than welcome addition to the regular character roster. His first line in "Initiation" was all I needed to like the guy just as much as the original seven, and his characterization throughout that episode sealed the deal.
Bats in "TOAFT II:" "Are criminals still superstitious and cowardly?"
AMAZO in "Wake the Dead." Aquaman's expression when he telekenetically picked up the chess pieces and asked for a new game was haunting and humorous at the same time.
Improved animation.
And above all else, what do I love about JLU? The only American cartoon broadcast in W I D E S C R E E N without the need for an HDTV!

Besides Bruce Timm's designs, which i think are genious (Mr. Timm is truely a 'modern master' for sure), I really apprieciate the scope of the show, and how ambitious it is. Even though i complain a lot about the writing, and as much as i wish theyd have gotten to continue the original JL series, part of me is really glad JLU is formated the way it is. If they eventually can pull of such an ambitious series the right way, then it will be worth all the mediocre episodes. I like feeling like so much is condensed into a 1/2 hour (when its done right, btw). I like it when we get TONS of heros per episode. I dont know how to explain it, but its just so far-reaching that when it works, its like NOTHING we've ever seen before in the 'Timmverse'. Its truely unique and enlightening.
Its as if it's a brain exercise or something, and by the end of the season you feel like youve gotten to know a whole slue of characters, and you just feel more knowlegeable about the whole DCAU, you know. And it also requires you to keep track of the characters, since they dont all appear each week. It has a certain element of audience participation (in each episode and over the course of the season) that really works well w/ the scope of the show. peace.

that's why you don't see me picking it apart other then what I want to see in the future. I even liked War World and Hawk & Dove.
Thanks for bringing Green Arrow, Black Canary, the Atom, Zatanna, and the dozens of other new team members into the fold. Because of Justice League, I've become a DC Comics fan, and seeing all these characters animated means a lot. Also, thanks for bringing Hawkgirl back and continuing her story. Rock on

The Cat and the Canary. Wake The Dead. For The Man Who Has Everything. Green Arrow. Baby Etrigan. Supergirl. Wildcat. Captain Atom. The Atom. The overall design of the show. The great directing. I could go on and on listing the little things I've enjoyed. This is a great thread, too. Sometimes we get so caught up in discussing what we don't like, we forget about the things we really do like. In the very least, I know I'm guilty of this on occasion. Again, great thread, DisneyBoy.

You could definitely make the case that it was too much of a "fanboy moment", but I got an enormous kick out of seeing Hal Jordan.
Quick aside: every week, I watch Justice League Unlimited with a friend of mine. There's a local pizzeria with an all-you-can-eat evening buffet, so it's our weekend ritual to go there every Saturday night, fill up on pizza, and watch JLU in the TV room. When I saw Hal Jordan, I quite literally coughed up a mouthful of food. It was gross, but also hilarious.

Thank you for:
1) Continuing JL through JLU
I'm so glad that you're continuing the great work that you did on JL, and building on it. Long live the JLU!
2) New characters
The Question, BC, Wildcat, Green Arrow... thanks for bringing in these characters and occassionally making me care about them
3) Music
Aside from the theme song that grew on me... OLD WESTERN JL THEME!!! Bats singing!!! And various other types of music.
4) Squeal-worthy moments
The amassed heroes in The Return. Seeing AMAZO and Shayera again. Seeing Shayera without her mask. The Wild West romp. And *sigh* seeing Hal Jordan without removing John Stewart permanently.

Thankful for:
The expanded roster (especially Question, Green Arrow and Black Canary)
The great storytelling in For the Man.... and Cat and Canary - among other eps as well, but above and beyond, those two stand out. And yes, I know For the Man.... is an adaptation. That doesn't mean it's automatically good......
'...because I can't fly. At all.'
'Take the stick out Corporal.' 'It's Captain!'
'I think you're what I protested in college.'
Am I Blue.
Kids Stuff -- I know some people don't like it -- but come on Kid Lantern! Superkid! Wonder Girl! Batboy! COME ON!
I'll end there -- like people have been saying -- there is much more.....

I've been a fan of the DC animated series since the original Batman was on Fox (as I'm sure many of us have been ). I watched slack jawed over and over.
When the shows popped up on the WB for Superman and the New Adventures, I was popping in VHS tapes like tic tacs, trying to record every episode I could.
Then... the silence. Batman Beyond was cool but I thought it ended way before it really reached it's stride. I'm sure I missed a lot of episodes too but it's so cool to see what's been done with that future world after the fact.
Justice League was cool but at first felt so stiff.
JLU is like reshaping the entire continuity, making all ends meet, giving character and guts to everybody and doing it in an amazing grin inspiring style.
When I first started reading this board it was because I was so enthusiastic about the "once and future" 2 parter that I wanted to find a place to chat about it.
I was so disheartened when I saw all the slams! This series is the best thing on TV as far as I'm concerned. I love the animations, character designs, voice casting, direction, you name it. Nothing but thumbs up, goose bumps and the suprising emotional connection I some times find myself having. :o Way to go!
Some moments i've loved include the bonding between Hawkgirl and Grundy (and the nebulous Of Mice & Men follow up), The Question singing 'Britney Spears', the future-tech Jokers, The Ultimen, and Supergirl fighting Galatea. Wow.
I hope JLU will go on for a few years but most of all I hope that the creative team stays with these properties. Although I enjoy the fact that BT and company have opened the doors for these properties, I have found that I really enjoy them more when the creators are at the helm. The Batman is pretty terrible, and Zeta left me cold. Static Shock is OK if not a little goofy and young. Future Static is much better ;)
Here's hoping for a long future for the Bruce Timm team! Thanks so much for YEARS of enjoyment, Bruce. :anime:

This is such a broad-focused thread that I have a hard time thinking of specific things to praise the series for, even though there's lots and lots I like. So, umm...
I really think the opening sequance is really, really strong. It's got a great theme, accompanied by some great visuals. As much as I liked (and like) the Teen Titans opening with it's energy, JLU comes out and trumps it by a wide margin. There. I said something about JLU was better than something about Teen Titans. b.t. can die happy... just not for a long, long time. Simply put: The JLU opening is the best opening for a Superhero cartoon EVER.
Also: the JL/U version of Batman continues to be the best of the various "Bruce Timm style Batmans" and my personal favorite.
I like Green Arrow a lot. He's becoming a very good, integral character to the league, and I can't imagine the show without him now. Easily the best of the "new heroes."
There's lots more I like, I swear! That's just all I can think of right now.

I so want A better world part 2,, The Batman from the future breaks his team out of jail and they become The Crime Syndicate http://jl.toonzone.net/crimesyndicate/crimesyndicate.htm

Aren't there enough 'real world' stories so that we can avoid endless "alternate reality" stories? Besides we alread had the Justice Lords in "A Better World".
On a seperate note I really liked seeing Giganta, and her voice was perfect.
Bring back Lori Petty as Livewire!!! :D

Nothing wrong with having them, but I think there are alot of characters to still be explored without having more alternate versions of core characters appearing. Just my opinion.
Bizarro and Giganta together. Too great. I've got the Bizarro maquette. Now if only they would make Giganta! :D

It sounds tantalizing, but I have the feeling that if a DTV is finally greenlighted, by that point the suits will want it to incorporate the newer characters from JLU, which might result in the original script being jettisoned yet again. Someday, when the DCAU is just a memory, I'd really like to see some of those unused scripts, like the "ultra-dark" Batman Beyond Catwoman one, published or at least made available for fans to peruse.

My moment of glory came when the we saw Sheriff Ohiyesa Smith. I own a copy of Detective Comics #151, and I never thought I would get to see him. I geeked out fantastically because I am part Lakota. Some people here want a Nightwing TAS or Green Lantern Corp Show. I would tune in every week for an Ohiyesa show.

Too gimmicky? As opposed to "mirror world" versions? C'mon.
Your criticism of the episode gets pretty thin when you just add a ham-fisted sarcastic tone. You could describe anything that way. Why not just make fart sounds next time someone asks you your opinion?
Doomsday being lobotimized and the press' reaction were nice touches. Probably my favorite scene in that episode was the "whoah" version of Arkham. The new tone of the Joker's voice was so creepy, and the delivery of "but Wonder Woman was supposed to say it" was great.
Poison Ivy's "I don't care about much of anything anymore" was hilarious. I thought for sure she was going to raise the alarm for the flower picking.
I'm surprised there haven't already been some direct-to-video JL movies.
I'd love to see something on par with ROTJ in terms of a darker tone.

cool. I'd love an original JL movie. A JLU one would be cool too, but a JL one, yeah, i'd love that one, and itd be cool cause it would take place between the shows, kind of like how the "Cowboy Bebop" movie took place some time before the series ended, but was made after. yeah.

b.t. - is there any way JLU characters and ideas could be incorporated into the JL DTV so it can still be made? And was the Dark Catwoman story actually written, or just pitched?
I miss Batman Beyond so much :(
And since I'm asking questions that probably won't get answers - Have you ever read Ed Brubaker's Sleeper (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1401201156/) from DC/Wildstorm? Do you think it would make a good animated show for Adult Swim or HBO?

This Little Piggy was over the top for me though. but other than that, I am JLU crazed!! I have seen every ep of the show and I am constantly following it, I was especially impressed with the clever twists and turns in The Cat and the Canary, which had awe-inspiring art, smooth animation, and some of THE best fight scenes to date... not to mention a perfect mix of action, drama, suspence, romance, clever plot, character introduction and development, and humor...

is it too big of a leap to speculate that WW's jet was "requisitioned" from alternate universe WW? EUREKA! that makes sense!
i just hope no decisons are made at WB based on sales of the first JLU DVD, unless those decisions involve increasing quality to a reasonable level.

What a great thread this is. I really complain hard (espescially because I'm WWcentric) but don't think for a second its not the realization of a dream. Even if DCAU WW didn't fit my ideal for her, its a pleasure to watch her growing stature and personality on JLU. And JL and JLU have finally after years of reading and loving Hawkgirl given me a true sense of her as a character and as a person(if that's what they call em on Thanagar? who knows- it could be gwepple;) ). Everyone else shines as they iconically should and JLU is a feast for the eyes and heart of every true DC lover. So hats off gentlemen. No matter how hard we complain we thank you even if that thanks is given in contention. I love that do you what you do . And I love that you do it well and with care. But don't mistake me, I still want the contest and the lasso of truth:) .

I like the show for reasons stated in the earlier post, and for a reason which hasn't been mentioned.
With most cartoons these days being more teen/kid themed shows, JLU is a welcome change. Don't get me wrong. I have some favorite teen shows (Kim Possible, Danny Phantom, Teen Titans).
Hence why I think Cartoon Network doesn't do much airing of JL/JLU reruns. The old mindset that kids won't enjoy a show unless the main character is a kid/teen.

I'm thankful for all the continuity references going all the way back to BTAS.
When creators acknowledge their past work and how far their universe expands, it really shows they care about their characters.
So thank you guys for writing such strong, consistent characters and stories, and continuing to use them for more than 12 years.

Catwoman in Batman Beyond? Wha?No, but Melanie Walker/Ten from B.B. "Dead Man's Hand" is Batman Beyond's Selina Kyle (B:TAS Catwoman). Old Bruce made the comparison at the end of the episode, as Ten is sent to jail, when he says to Terry, "Let me tell tell you about a woman I knew named Selina Kyle."

Catwoman in Batman Beyond? Wha? An aborted Batman Beyond DTV to have focused on what happened to Catwoman. Said to be ultra dark, a script was written but the project shelved, perhaps due to the furor over ROTJ. The next Batman DTv would instead be the ultra light and incosequential Mystery of the Batwoman.

It’ll get more kids interested in comics? I know the original Batman TAS did that for me. And besides, ten years from now the kids who grew up watching JLU will be able to pick up the DVDs and see just how smart the writing was back then. I have a feeling The Batman may not hold up as well...
(NOT THAT I’M TRYING TO BASH “THE BATMAN”, OR GO OFF-TOPIC OR ANYTHING, HE SAID USING CAPS TO GET HIS PLEADANT MESSAGE ACROSS.)
Have a good day then.

I have a feeling The Batman may not hold up as well...That's why I think CN is crazy to schedule "The Batman" at 9:00 PM Satuday right behind JLU on Toonami.
"The Batman" would be better suited for a different timeslot like on the "Miguzi" block.
And for the record, John Cage, as I look at by Transformer G1 DVD Boxsets, I agree with you that there will be a market for the various DCAU series for their enduring quality even ten to twenty years from now.
