Howdy,
For those who are so inclined, happy Ash Wednesday. Not quite sure if it's an occasion for celebration, but best wishes for the day anyway.
If you were wondering why all those people have dirt on their foreheads, wonder no more (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ash_Wednesday).

I'm Catholic, so yeah.
Happy Ash Wednesday.

Yes. A Happy Ash Wednesday towards all and a good beginning to Lent, or as Colin Quinn has stated is French for 'rehab'.
I'll be one of the few who get the mark on my forehead.

Thank you, Ed!
It comes so early this year. I haven't even considered what I'm giving up for Lent. I usually do soda pop. Probably will this year, too. For me, that's about the biggest sacrifice I can make.

I remember this day.. we used to get the Ash crosses on our forehead, back in the day.
As a kid, it always felt cool that you were allowed to be dirty, yet were being a good kid at the same time. :)

We don't do much for Ash Wednesday here in rural Pennsylvania. We do have a great tradition for Fat Tuesday though; Fastnacht Day. Nowhere near the scale of Mardi Gras, but at least we get some good Pennsylvania Dutch donuts.

I've already had a few people at work go "you got something on your forehead.."
I always thought the end of lent matched up with Passover? (It does in the Bible O_o) but it's so early this year..... *hungry*
I'm givng up soda as well, it worked well for me last year (it was painful enough that it was a sacrifice, but nothing major that would really affect me negatively..like no Cartoons) Myabe deserts too, like I have in the past. But of course I could always give up the defaults...Alcohol and Sex! ( )

I don't really know what I want to give up. Maybe I should go for restraint more often than naught on various comforts or something.
Still not sure.

For me, I look at what vices I have that I really, really would HATE to give up.
I can easily go forty days without video games, animation, tv in general, as I can simply devote that time towards other activities that need my attention. But soda? Each year, I dread Lent because I think to myself, I simply can't live without diet coke. But each year, I do. It's easier for me to do something for God, than it is to do something for myself.

I think it's pretty cool that someone started an Ash Wednesday thread in the first place.
I had completely forgotten about it, though, until I saw someone with the mark leaving my sociology class earlier today. I went to a Catholic high school, so it's the first Ash Wednesday in several years where I haven't gone to Mass. It feels kinda weird.

I haven't figured out my Lent giveaway either, though I'm not sure I could pull off soda
Video games aren't really an option, because I don't play them much anymore, TV is too easy, and I'm not convinced comic books are a vice. I don't drink much in the Lent season, either, so that one doesn't really count. Any suggestions?

So much for those left-over pork chops tonight.
Couldn't quite make it to mass this morning, so I had to borrow some ashes from my little bro's forehead.
I guess I'll give up that chip habit that I've been slowly slipping back into. Better stop that problem before it grows.

I forgot it was coming. Now I have all of this chocolate I stored in my house that I can't eat. It's not too bad though, I just hate not eating meat because it is about all I eat. I will probaly end up having peanut butter toast for supper.
1. I'm going to go to my classes. All of them.
2. I'm going to limit my Internet use to a set number of hours a day. Probably three.
French for rehab. Heh. I'll have to remember that.

I've already had a few people at work go "you got something on your forehead.."That's pretty funny. I almost said that to someone one year, but luckily caught myself. In my defense, the cross was kinda smeared, but still.
Anyway, good luck to everyone on keeping Lent.
Any suggestions?
Swearing? Smoking? Falling from rocks?

you obviosuly have no respect for your religion. maybe you should try to understand it better. Ask your parents WHY you are getting those ashes on your head and giving something up for 40 days. I have the opposite problem, I know why but my parents keep shoving the reasons down my throat. I swear , my mom read out of this little booklet last nighjt for what felt like an hour and it must've repeated certain things like 4 times:yawn: .
if that doens't work for you...well, I don't know what to tell you in that respect, maybe as a preist you trust for more "personal" info regarding the situation. that is....if you WANT to improve, it sounds like you have a problem with being religious in general, and there's no advice I can give you there.

Maybe, don't do that anyway, can't be helped, and unlike some people I tend to avoid the sauce when posting. :p

I'm not Catholic, and never understood the point of something like this which has no Biblical basis. But I'm not Ted Turner either, so I won't yell at you for it.
