Nintendo Store in the Works
Company building a new concept store in NY.
By Juan Castro (http://cube.ign.com/email.html)

February 8, 2005 - According to a recently posted job opening at Nintendo's corporate website, the company is preparing to open a new retail store in Rockefeller Center, New York. The posting calls for a Retail Store Manager to oversee operations at a new concept store. The store promises state-of-the-art design and structure, and will boast everything from Nintendo themed paraphernalia to the newest software and hardware. The new outlet, which is yet to be named, will undoubtedly play host to a number of special events, such as software and hardware launch celebrations.

Interestingly enough, the Pokemon (http://cube.ign.com/articles/586/586246p1.html#) Center, which is located in the Rockefeller Center, is currently closed down for major operations. A quick jaunt over to pokemoncenter.com reveals the store will reopen as a "one-stop-shop" for everything Nintendo (http://cube.ign.com/articles/586/586246p1.html#). The site also states the new concept store will feature a series of stations to try the latest games (http://cube.ign.com/articles/586/586246p1.html#), and will carry various Nintendo consoles and accessories. Also on the site is the tentative launch date of spring 2005, when Nintendo expects its new store to open for business. Sony's Metreon store, located in San Francisco, CA, may offer a glimpse of what gamers (http://cube.ign.com/articles/586/586246p1.html#) can expect.

Sony celebrated the launch of its next-gen system, the PS2, at the Metreon store, and there's a chance Nintendo may do the same for its new console. While evidence is non-existent at this point, it seems a logical move for the company and wouldn't present much of a surprise.

Stay tuned for more details.

I've been wondering recently how the heck they've been able to stretch out so little Pokemon merchandise over such a large store area...

I only hope the store actually LASTS. I mean, this is NINTENDO we're talking about here.

Oh, it'll last. You don't rent out a prime piece of retail real estate in Rockefeller Center with the intention of letting it go to waste.

Besides, that Pokemon Center lasted for a few years. And that was ONLY Pokemon!

This store will last if they manufacture new NES/SNES units and games and sell them exclusively there. That's the kind of store I would go to that said "Nintendo" on it.

I don't see why they wouldn't. It'd make sense for them to try to get the whole Pokemon crowd to come into the store and then branch into more Nintendo stuff. Sounds like a good idea for me.

This actually sounds like a good idea to me. It seems like it would be a good place to buy those Nintendo T-Shirts. With a place like that, I wouldn't have to go into stores like Hot Topic or TSX to get a shirt with Mario on it. No offense to those who do shop there, but those stores aren't really my kind of place, you know.

Nintendo is 20 years too late with this idea!

They need to open one up in San Francisco, to rival with Sony Metreon. :p

I've seen about 25 different Nintendo/Nintendo related shirts there over the last 3 years.

No, I haven't. I'll have to check it out. They have one or two at Target, but they're not anything I'm really interested in. One I already have, the other is a color I already have 3 or 4 shirts in.

And when they have that stuff on sale, you can do pretty well. Much better than Hot Topics, but Hot Topics has all sorts of doo-dads as well.

Well check out this t-shirt I got from Hot Topic last year:

Not bad. I wasn't saying the HT shirts weren't good, just that Kohl's sale prices were worth checking out.

off topic. My beloved violent video game tshirt (http://caoine.org/images/violent_shirt.gif) is getting ridiculously too big on me, and they aren't making any more, so I can't order a new, smaller one. =\

Actually, I checked out Kohl's and their selection was kind of picked over. Also, all their t-shirts were crammed together on this one rack.

Awww, that's too bad Adam. You're welcome to check out my local Kohl's next time you're down in atlanta. The one in town rocks. :D

Awww, that's too bad Adam. You're welcome to check out my local Kohl's next time you're down in atlanta. The one in town rocks. :DMaybe if I'm ever in Georgia, I'll take you up on that. The store I went to would have actually been fine if I had wanted to buy the green 1-up mushroom t-shirt. However, I already have a green Link t-shirt. It's like how I don't want to get the grey Mario, Luigi and B'bomb shirt because I already have 4 grey t-shirts of different sorts. A Mario shirt in red or blue would be nice (you'd think those would be easy colors to find, considering the character).

(Update Edit): Today, I went to the big mall (as opposed to the one right near my house) and checked in, of all places, JCPenney. They had a whole lot of Nintendo shirts and some Sonic the Hedgehog shirts too. For some reason, I wouldn't have thought to look there. Maybe it's because I have bad memories of being brought there to try on clothes as a kid.

Anyway, I wonder what other type of stuff the Nintendo store will sell. It makes a lot of sense that Nintendo would eventually get a store. Next to Disney, Warner Bros. and Marvel Comics, they have some of the most classic trademark characters out there.

JCPenny's huh? I'll have to drag my carcass over to the mall sometime soon.

By an amazing coincidence, I was given a link to see something at Amazon, and I saw an ad for Nintendo Apparel (http://www.amazon.com/gp/search.html/ref=dp_searchBox_1/103-0719449-9698210?url=node%3D1036682&keywords=nintendo).

Good heavens! I WANT that controller beanie!!!

And you're right about it being a good time for Nintendo to have their own shop. (One of my fav shops of all time was the Warner Brothers shop at the Burlington Mall in Mass. All sorts of B:TAS, Animaniacs & Pinky and the Brain stuff there.)

I'll admit it, some of those shirts do look really cool, even if a portion of eahc sale does go to the coffers of 4Kids. :^\

It helps if you have a big mall. The one in the little mall near my house had next to nothing.

On a similar note, one thing notable I should mention finding there is a pink 1-up mushroom t-shirt. In the Men's section. I feel a great swell of respect for any guy who buys that one. That's a hard color for us to pull off.

I can just imagine the Nintendo store now. Nice big space. Statues of Mario and Link near the entrance. All sorts of Nintendo apparel for people of all ages. A whole pile of Toad, Yoshi and Donkey Kong plushies for kids to get attached to. Princess Peach dress-up sets for girls, Link adventure sets for boys (complete with plastic Master sword). Nintendo cups, mugs and plates. And a whole section devoted to consoles and games. The sad part: we still wouldn't be able to find any merchandise related to Kid Icarus.

This reminds me of an idea I had once that there should be a Nintendo theme park. It wouldn't have to be their own park. They could do it in conjunction with Disney or Universal. C'mon, admit it, you know you'd like to ride the "Super Mario Pipe Coaster" or go on the "Legend of Zelda Dungeon Adventure" ride.

I thought there was some sort of nintendo park. Maybe I'm getting confused. I know there's some sort of sanrio park in Japan.

And I LOVE your ideas for rides, Adam!

Ah, well Japan is one thing. The US is another. Here in the US, a Nintendo park would probably have to be one of those Islands of Adventure at Universal. I doubt they'd be able to make it completely on their own. It would be like if they made a park that was just Marvel Comics or something.

And I LOVE your ideas for rides, Adam!
You haven't even heard all of them yet. There's still the "F-Zero Speed Track" ride, the "Starfox: Lylat Mission" simulator ride. There's the "Donkey Kong Barrel Plunge" water ride. Not to mention the "Pokemon 3-D experience" movie. Don't forget to bring the little kiddies to try the rides in the "Kirby's Dreamland" section. Also, you can visit the shops and restaraunts in Onett. The hometown of Ness from Earthbound is this park's version of the "Main Street" entrance that so many big parks have. Still don't have an idea for a Metroid ride, though (if you've got an idea for one, you can tell me).

I spend a whole lot of time daydreaming things like this.
