Take look at the press release I just posted to the News board. Do I read those numbers right? More kids 6-11 are watching Adult Swim than Adults 18-34??

heh thats probly right...
Adults have lives and most "normal" adults dont even watch cartoon network in the first place...
also, if it has that evil disclaimer at the beginning saying all that stuff about "leave now if your under 18" or whatever, its only gonna make kids want to watch it even more!

--considering animation's stigma as being "for kids", the fact that children are curious by nature, and taking what's happened in the past with popular shows like South Park and Beavis and Butt-Head into consideration. (Maybe opening the block with Home Movies is luring parents into a false sense of security, their reasoning being something with such limited animation (cf. Saturday morning's E/I-oriented Squigglevision) must be for the wee nippers.
For the record I've let my ten-month-old niece watch Cowboy Bebop sitting on my lap. I don't think it'll twist her...much....

Yep. Those stats were collected a few months ago. That is the exact reason they added the disclaimer bumper between the commericals. CN's trying to cover their butts, but its hard.
Also...kids 6-11 still have school. How the hell are they staying up past 10? *old-timer voice* "When I was that age, I went to bed at 9pm the latest." Honestly....that's the 1st - 5th grade. The kids might not have homework, but geez...

Did I read something recently about how parents were mad about the content of Adult Swim cartoons not being appropriate for their children. You know, I would think the last thing you would need to do is leave a Y-14 rating up on the screen for the entire time the line up is on when it is called ADULT SWIM! That would make as much sense complaining that Fox KIDS didn't have enough quality adult programming for me to enjoy!

I think what surprises me more is not that the number of kids is so high, but that the number of adults is so low. Although the adult numbers are doubled from last year, I still think there's a few hundred thousand potential viewers that would love Adult Swim. Hopefully this site will help lure some of them in.

Confirms suspicions that most adults don't give a crow about cartoons unless they have some family-oriented value to it, like "The Simpsons" or KOTH. Why do you think shows like "Invasion America" (other than the fact that it sucked...but that doesn't stop most people, so quality shouldn't be a factor) and "The Critic" last as long as milk left out of the fridge for 3 hours?

Look at those numbers again...they are actually pretty impressive. The total number overall for adults only shows a 28% growth, but for Adult Swim, they chart a 127% growth for adults.
That's not too shabby for three months. In a year's time, if the adults continue to outgrow the increase in the kid's audience, I feel that number will soon surpass the number of kids watching.

In case you haven't read the Toonzone site, I'll explain two things.
1) The ratings do not show WHICH shows Kids 6-11 are watching.
2) Adults 18-34 has grown by 222% in the past 3 months, which is very impressive.
Kids could be leaving their TVs on, or stop watching after Home Movies(a show with situations most kids can identify with).

Kids probably don't get the humor in ATHF or Sealab as much as Home Movies. Either that or their parents seen Sealab and the end result was the TV being off. :)
I'm glad the percentage has rose for adults. But even if high numbers are in from kids, it's still reassurance that AS will be on for a long time.

We also have to keep in mind the Nielson Ratings system works only if the people using it put their personal code into the box (I actually never have used it, but I knew a family who did, so if I am forgetting the finer details of the process, forgive me!) so perhaps the adults are forgetting to put their codes in after their kids go to bed? There aren't really that many households that register Nielson ratings, so if a few people forgot, it could impact the ratings overall.

Not that there's anything wrong with those two shows. I love both of them! Kinda sad that most "adults" only watch those two cartoons, though, isn't it? (and to a lesser extent, Futuramam, I suppose) Especially considering the state of sitcoms these days, most of which I consider to be nothing more than innuendo-filled garbage, basically. Which is what many of them are.

Call me a mutant (go ahead, I'll wait. ok, now on with my point) but, I don't find anything on adult swim thats all that harmful to kids. Ok, maybe that gas pipe episode of space ghost may be on the border but beyond that I just don't see what is all the fuss. Even then, I'm watching it with them and I'll tell them, if your breath gas, your going to die, don't do it.
BTW before anyone gets their panty's in a twist, let me say that I don't let them stay up past 10pm. Heck I can't stay up past 10. I record them and watch the shows during the day.

heh, well im 16 in February guess I'm not exactly a kid anymore but I started watching stuff like South Park pretty early and I have been watching Space Ghost C2C since elementary school, frankly I think kids need more of this stuff, it gave me a good sense of humor

Good points. I used to watch worse stuff when I was a kid and I think I came out all right. But people always get rather sensitive when it's the content of cartoons you're talking about, so things are always bound to be taken out of context and blown out of proportion. But of course, that is fueled by politicians and psycholgists who blame problems with kids on the media.
I would dare say that there are Looney Tunes cartoons that are meant more to be seen by adults than Adult Swim cartoons.

You're right. Especially a lot of the cartoons that were made during WWII that would almost make the Adult Swim block G-rated. Stuff like Private Snafu and early Looney Tunes that were made specifically for adults. A lot of Tex Avery's stuff was racy, too.

Well, I'm 15 and I watch Adult Swim. And I tape it and show it to my friends, who are 12, 14, and 15, respectively. It's not like there's anything on there that would make it R rated, which is suggested by the "No kids under 18" thing. At worst it's PG-13.

Theres nothing at all wrong with the shows *Maybe SeaLab2021*
....................................
I can easily say that Kids SHOULD be watching it , mainly around the ages 12-16........
Another thing that bothers me , is that they put a Disclamer for 18 and up , which is not only a bad rating for the shows , but Its a Year over the age they give on there advertisments.
Im a kid and I can say these shows are great.
Mature Audiences?
I must be Mature than........... People actually have been known to mistake me for a Adult. :)

Okay...not to rag on Adult Swim (due to the fact that it's spreading Cowboy Bebop to the masses), but even though the disclaimers at the beginning of each show say no one under 18 should be watching, the highest rating the FCC has given ANY of the shows is TV-14. Does that not make sense to anyone besides me?

Cartoon Network is using the big scary warning to make sure they don't get sued. I'm 15, and while watching it one night my mom walked into the room right during the warning. She gave me one of those "WHAT are you WATCHING?!" looks and I explained that it was Adult Swim.
I mean, does CN really have to put that serious of a warning on before Home Movies?! That could be shown on the freakin' Disney channel!

Yea I know!!! I've always found that weird...and the shows aren't really that bad(sex joke wise)! I mean, with each week the shows are getting even more raunchier and more loose.. which makes me think about alot about television... Ok this is very off the subject but recently I watched the Godfather movies on tv and they showed them uncut, with the sh**, f***, and damn words not cut out, they're reason "its an American classic", so are they saying that its better than the stuff today so that gives them a reason to show it uncut? (they did show it at 7 pm) well whatever case it is, classic movies are now gonna be shown uncut on tv, but what about other movies?! why can't they be shown uncut?! I'm very confused!!! Stupid Censors!!
but still I hope more adults watch Adult swim!(or at least cowboy bebop)

I agree that TV sends mixed messages and at times is hypocritical. I can hear words on the Man Show on Comedy Central that get bleeped on the Daily Show, for some reason. I know it's a different "demographic" and all, but do they think we are too stupid to fill in the bleep our selves when we hear shBLEEP? And to show a "classic" movie uncut like that is the ultimate sending of the mixed message to audiences.
But then again...maybe that strong and stern warning is warranted before Adult Swim. I think kids are going to take up smoking and fighting Atari icons now just cuz they saw it on TV.
