In about as anti-Janet Jackson/Justin Timberlake as you can get, Paul McCartney will be performing during half time of Super Bowl XXXIX. There will also be pre-game performances by Alicia Keys, Gretchen Wilson, Charlie Daniels and the Black Eyed Peas among others.

Forty years after the Beatles rocked the Gator Bowl, Paul McCartney will return to Jacksonville to perform at the Ameriquest Mortgage Super Bowl XXXIX Halftime Show. McCartney had previously performed at Super Bowl XXXVI in New Orleans and is excited to be in Jacksonville and performing at halftime. "There's nothing bigger then being asked to perform at the Super Bowl," said McCartney. "We're looking forward to rocking the millions at home and in the stadium." Grammy Award winner and multi-platnum recording artist Alicia Keys has been added to the lineup. Keys will perform "America the Beautiful" on the field as part of a pregame show that will include Gretchen Wilson, Charlie Daniels, Black Eyed Peas and John Fogerty. I've looked around but haven't found an answer. Have they teamed McCartney up with some crappy yojng pop star? I'm having nightmare visions of Aerosmith performing with (was it N*SYNC?) If not, then I will (intentionally) watch the Halftime show for the first time since I can remember.
I wish they did this more often. You know, get artists that don't suck.

We now return you to your scheduled program.
(P.S. And don't forget to watch "American Dad" after the Simpsons episode after the Superbowl. And if you don't like AD's first episode, give a few more episodes in May a shot, since it might get better.)

McCartney's cool, but the rest of that lineup puts me to sleep.

I've been actively avoiding half time shows for what seems like forever.
I can at least see McCartney having some appeal to football fans though.
The thing is, the Super Bowl appeals to people who have no interest in football, it's probably the only game a lot of people watch each year. Heck, a lot of people are watching just for the commercials and musical acts.
So, the half time show has been something for all the non-football people who have to put up with all their friends watching football, and something football fans have to tolerate to make their non-football fan friends happy.
Not that people are always so easily stereotyped. For instance the biggest NASCAR fan I know always has is listening to Madonna or something like that, and it just kills everyone.

Personally I'm convinced that the NFL is so terrified of the FCC that they'll have The Wiggles doing the half time show.

I like Paul McCarthy, really. I think I'd enjoy his performace more if I knew it wasn't the NFL/FOX/whoever bending over backwards so as not to piss off the FCC.
I don't watch the pregame stuff, but even still that's a little lame. Oh well...

Well, I'm a Patriots fan, but to be honest, after two Superbowl wins in a 3 year period, I'm not really sure if I care that much. And I absolutely hate half time shows. I mean, if I want to listen to music, I'll play some mp3s. I don't watch a football game to listen to music. Am I the only one who's looking forward to the Simpsons and American Dad more than the actual Superbowl?

Looks like you all missed the special 3 minute American Dad Super Bowl short. I was expecting it to air a little closer to gametime but I guess that's FOX for you. Not really much of an improvement from the pilot you'll be seeing tonight at 10:30/10:45/whenever, but the timing was a lot faster and the humor was a little closer to Seth's typical brand.

Actually I did see the promo and it dampened my enthusiasm for that show. Not bad enough to keep me from watching though.
I also saw G.H.W. Bush and Clinton showing up together. It's like they're trying to create another Ford/Carter pairing.

a halftime show that's worth watching... could it be true? unfortunately they spent all their money on McCartney for halftime, so the pregame show is full of crap.
who the hell is Gretchen Wilson? am I the only person who's never heard of her? and Alicia Keys... bleh.

Man, I remember when the Super Bowl was here in Minny ('91), and the halftime show was a Winter Musical Revue. And in the grand scheme of things, we're not all too far removed from... (shudder) Up With People.

It's reached the level of mediocre. It doesn't matter. I'm working under the assumption that this isn't the best of American Dad, just the first.
I also saw G.H.W. Bush and Clinton showing up together. It's like they're trying to create another Ford/Carter pairing.Man, Clinton has lost a lot of weight since the heart attack. He actually looked like an old man. He reminded me of my grandfather when he was dying of cancer.

At first I thought the stage looked cool when it was just lit up with solid colors.
Then they illustrated "Baby you can drive my car" by showing a bunch of cars.
Lamer then a planetarium light show.
They went to just showing video of the performers. Much better.
Hay, I'm watching a half time and not getting sick from the music.
Live and let die!!!!!
Dammit, I wish I had a lighter...
Paul McCartney has always had an undeniable talent, much more so than say...Justin Timberlake.

Paul McCartney rocked, but they made it look like he was on American Idol. They should've gotten a less tacky stage. Less neon. The fireworks can stay, though.

I normally avoid the Superbowl at all costs (seeing as I HATE football) I went running into the room upon hearing "Live and Let Die". and "Hey Jude" was the frosting on the cake. MAN that was awesome, I wish I was there.

Yea Bill Clinton...Why did he had to moon in front of the crowd and Pual rip Clinton's pants. Sad, sad, sad. The FCC is coming knocking on the door.
You know that's a lame joke.:p
Anyways looks like another close one this year. Go Pats! The second half coming up.

I have great respect for Paul McCartney and his music. However, I enjoy listening to something more along the lines of last year, sans nudity. I also don't like the fact that they went the ultra-non-offensive, Let's-not-do-anything-to-invoke-the-FCC's-ire route instead of just cutting out the nonsense.

*shrug* I dunno, is it such a problem that Paul McCartney is inoffensive? He's Paul Frigging McCartney!
If you really want something offensive, go to town interpreting "Get Back", with lines like "Sweet Loretta Martin thought she was a woman, but she was another man" and "Jojo left his home in Tuscon Arizona for some California grass".

That halftime show was the best I have ever seen, Paul McCartney is an amazing singer. And I love the screen that was on the stage, they showed some great pictures. And according to my mom Paul still looks good after all these years. :D

Great performance. Does Live and Let Die rock or what? I wish Axl had come out to sing it with him.
Maybe it was just me, but I was hoping Paul would moon the crowd or something just to see what the reaction would be.
Now THAT'S how a halftime show should be: No gimmicks, no unwanted surprises and no PR crap.
That's right up there with U2's 2002 performance as one of my favorite half-time shows. Way to go, Paul! :D

By the way, the ratings for this super bowl were somewhat less than expected:
SEMI-SUPER RATINGS: Despite the close game, Super Bowl XXXIX wasn't so super ratings-wise. According to preliminary estimates, an average of 78 million people watched the Pats stomp the Eagles. If those numbers hold, that would make it the least-watched championship game since 1990's San Francisco-Denver duel.
Well, 78 million is still a lot of freakin people though...
anyway, Paul McCartney without the other Beatles is like...Paul McCartney without the rest of the Beatles. Not that I'm suggesting they raise the other Beatles members from the dead or anything, I just don't get why so many people were so excited by the halftime show, I thought it was boring as hell.

As soon Paul McCartney began doing the half time show I changed the channel. I had no intrest in seeing him preform. I did catch a little of that Live and Let Die song which I only know from being a Bond fan.

For those of you that disliked McCartney or found him boring, would you rather have what they usually do? (Janet Jackson, Justin Timberlake, Shania Twain, *NSYNC, Christina Aguilera, Enrique Iglesias, etc.) Do you prefer crap? Even when there've been groups/people that didn't suck (Phil Collins, Aerosmith, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson), they were paired with people that do.

It's not that disliked McCartney. I disliked the songs that he played. I mean, he could have played some songs that people under the age of 30 knew.
Preferably, I loved to see an artist I actually like perform at the half-time show. But it's never happened so I won't get my hopes up.

Its just a matter of tastes and everyone isn't a McCartney fan so they aren't going to care for his music. Its hard to cater to everyone's likes but I felt the event planners went extra safe this year in light of the Janet/ Justin incident. But I have to say I have liked past halftime shows a lot more than what I saw here. So if that means I like crap then that's what I like.

I'm sorry, I shouldn't have put it that way.
But to me, McCartney/Beatles is kind of sacred.
(This is almost entirely joking)I can't understand how someone could have anything but love for that music. It's sacrilege. I say, The Beatles (all of them) are something that you have to like or there is something wrong with you.

None of those songs were obscure. Three were Beatles songs (and it's hard for me to understand people not knowing songs by the Beatles, likely the greatest group of all time) and "Live and Let Die" should be pretty familiar to most since it was the theme from the Bond movie of the same title and because the cover by Guns N' Roses gets a lot of play on rock stations.

I've never seen a half time show I liked. I usually change the channel during the halftime show. But, last year was awesome cause Janet Jackson showed her boob, which pissed off soccer moms everywhere and caused a huge controversy, which in turn turned the U.S. into a laughing stock all over the world, I loved the fact that every other country was making fun of us for being upset over a boob.

Those were all extremely famous songs, no matter what age you are. A Beatles "best of" album sold platinum (maybe multi-platinum) just a couple years ago. The crowd would probably have been much less excited to hear McCartney's latest recording.
