Me too, but we don't find out 'til next year. Monsters Inc. and Shrek are expected, with Waking Life a possible third if it's found eligible.

A small article I found that was dated Nov 5th:

The jury is still out on whether the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences will activate its new feature animation category at the Academy Awards next year.

As of the Academy's deadline last Thursday for toon entries, 13 features had entered the race. A mimimum of eight pictures must be submitted to the Academy's feature animation branch.

They must now evaluate the 13 entries to see if at least eight meet the following stipulations: pictures must be at least 70 minutes long and ``primarily animated.'' Acceptable animation styles include cel, computer-generated and stop-motion.

The Academy will announce the category's status, at least for the coming year, on Dec. 11.

Here's a link to the Oscar site with more info about the special rules for the best animated film category:
http://www.oscars.org/74academyawards/rules/rule07.html

The names of the 13 movies that were submitted have not been released, but I'm aware of a few that were submitted and one that was denied because it wasn't long enough. I know (90% sure) that Shrek, Final Fantasy, JinRoh, Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust, and Blood The Last Vampire were submitted, but Blood The Last Vampire was denied because it only has a running time of about 60 minutes.

I'm not sure which other films were submitted, but I would guess Osmosis Jones (although it might not be 75% animation), Pokemon 3 (maybe?), Jimmy Neutron, Atlantis, Waking Life, Recess: Schools Out, and Monsters INC. Does that give us 13 yet?

You'll find out on or around February 14--that's usually when they're announced.
