Sunset

Her heavy breaths grew shorter as the minutes passed, marveling at the sunset before her. Its bleeding colors of orange, pink, and gold were a beauty to behold after such a long tiring day as this one had been. Shameful tears trickled down her cheeks as the events of the day played through her mind over and over again, but why was she crying? Rogue and Kurt had lost their mother, she had nothing to cry about compared to that. It was just the horror of it all, just hours ago the strongest mutant to ever walk the earth stood before them. Giving them just a taste of his ultimate power.

Apocalypse…

Kitty’s body shook with immense fear, more tears streamed down her cheeks, God…it had been so scary…gazing into those cold, emotionless eyes of his awaiting her and her team mates’ doom. Her actual thoughts had been, glancing to her side at the Blue Elf, her best friend, ‘God…I’ll never get to hear him laugh again.’ It was a strange last thought, one she had never imagined herself thinking when starring death in its face.

“Elf,” she sobbed, shutting her eyes tightly to stop her tears “I could have lost you—I could have lost everyone to him…in an instant.”

Kitty’s eyes flickered back open at the sound of a soft thud down next to her, a watery smile curved on her lips at the sight of Kurt, dressed in only a pair of maroon sweat pants and a pair of red striped tube socks, having bamfed into the seat next to her. As she was perched up on the roof top, it was no doubt it would be his first place to look for her.

‘Kurt…he’s so considerate…and after learning of his mother’s fate by Mesmero’s hands he’s still worried about me,’ Kitty thought as he waved a plate of steaming cooked vegetables, fish, and rice under her nose.

“Hungry?” he grinned. “You’ve been up here a long time, Katzchen—everyone else headed straight to the showers and the kitchen—but you went up here, why?”

Kitty’s bottom lips trembled, trying to keep up her false smile. “I had a lot to think about,” she replied, her voice breaking with each word. “It’s nothing big…I’m fine,” she assured him as he took on a worried expression, gazing at her with concern.

Kurt set the dish down. “You’re a bad liar, Kitty. Now what’s wrong? Are you upset about today?”

Kitty bit her tongue. “Why would I be? I really should be asking you the same question—you just found out a few hours ago that Mys- I mean your mother is a statue, and your asking me if I’m okay? Why?”

“My mother may be stone, but she’s still alive—I have complete faith she’ll return to normal.” Kurt caught her eye, nodding knowledgeably, he smiled. “I know you like a book, Katzchen. You’re afraid to let anyone know you’re upset because you think it’s wrong to be upset with my mother’s state”

Kitty let out a silent gasp. “Kurt no.” She shook her head roughly, desperate to keep up her act as not to seem to him, of all people, that she was upset. “It’s just…I don’t…”

Kurt grasped her hand in his own, and planted a kiss on her knuckles. This had shocked her, such affection, but instead of yanking her hand away, as she once would have done she unleashed her tears and fell into his arms, whimpering in between her sobs.

Kurt rubbed her back comfortingly, wrapping his arms around her and tightening his embrace. “Don’t cry…I understand,” he breathed in her ear, “…he scared us all”.

“I wasn’t afraid to die” she cried, “I was afraid you’d all die and then I would be left all alone—you guys are my life…my family.” She gazed up at him “…and you…I was so afraid I’d never hear you laugh again, I’d never see you smile, you’d never tease me again,” she said, her voice so shaky.

Kurt’s eyes softened. “Katzchen…” he whispered, his smile broadening at her words that, to him, made him feel so warm inside, “…I don’t want you to worry about that, ever. You’re stuck with me for life.”

“But Kurt,” she raised a hand to his cheek, brushing the side of his face with the back of her hand. “What if our lifetimes are growing shorter? What if—“

“Katzchen stop,” Kurt commanded sternly. “Thinking that will destroy us, but if our lives are short than we’ve got to live our moments like they were our last?”

Kitty’s eyes glistened with more tears, but her tears now of happiness, unable to find words she merely nodded, nuzzling her head into his bare chest.

Kurt stroked her hair gently. “…Our last moments,” he uttered in but a whisper. He took her by the shoulders, pulling her up, their eyes locking.

“Our last moments?” she repeated in question, inching up so they’re noses brushed.

He nodded meekly. “Katzchen…”

As he edged his face down to hers their lips brushing so gently…his tail wrapping around her mid back, his three fingered hands moving from her shoulders down to her waist caressing the patches of skin through her torn and battered X-uniform inhaling her sweet scent as it soothed his very soul…her own lips parted, her breathes softened into rapid, anticipating huffs welcoming, inviting the kiss to come…

“Kitty, Kurt.”

Kitty immediately broke out of his hold weakening hold, looking off the rooftop and down at Scott, who waved up at them oblivious to what he had just interrupted. “We’re going out for pizza, want to come?” he shouted up at her, smiling brightly, his sunglasses blinking as the sunlight hit them as the clouds drifted from hiding the blaring sun.

Kurt sighed, disappointed, his tail unraveling from its comfortable wrap around her.

“Be down in a minute,” called Kitty, half smiling, she too secretly disappointed at their moment…ruined to them now with their friend’s calling.

Kitty turned to him as now sure Scott had returned inside, her smile now in full, broadening at his look of displeasure. “This helped a lot Kurt,” she managed in a whisper, her cheeks tinted red, her lips pursed together.

It would be forgotten, as they both had decided after the interruption.

“For the both of us.” He nodded. “Want me to bamf us down, Kitty?” he asked softly, tousling his indigo hair.

Kitty shook her head ‘no’, sliding over and positioning his arms around her leaning against him.

Kurt nodded, resting his head against her own copying her gaze into the brilliant colors disappearing along the horizon, gently pushing the stray strands of hair from her eyes.

Kitty took his hand in her own and traced the lines of his palm with her finger tips.

Kurt looked to his watch lazily. “They’ll be wondering where we are, Katzchen”

Kitty’s eyes glittered with amazement, as darkness crept into the sky, the wink whisking at them, whistling and sighing, her hair being pushed into Kurt’s face, tickling his nose and lips. She set his hand over her heart, to feel its rapid beats, shutting her eyes and willing them to stay forever in this moment.

“They can wait, I want to finish this sunset.”
