So, analysts say that the animated Oscar race will be between Shrek and Monsters, Inc. So - any comments on this? Or do you think there's a slim chance another film could win.
That is...assuming the Animated Oscar is a go...

I say the award goes too.......OSMOSIS JONES! :D :p
ahahaha.....oh....funny.
But no, really. As far as story line n' such goes...I'd give it to Shrek. Proving a kids cartoon can still be grown-up. Yes...right? hmm...yeah. Although Monsters was great!

I have a feeling Shrek would win, it seemed more appealing to the adult audience in general I felt, moreso than Monsters, Inc. Personally, I like Monsters, Inc. better. I cracked up more in Shrek, but Monsters was more meaningful to me. :)

Y'know, I saw Osmosis Jones over the weekend, and I thought it was pretty good. But my nod still goes to Shrek.

I haven't seen Shrek, nor do I care to, but I still have a feeling that Monster's Inc. will have a better chance. I'm probably not being objective, Okay I'm not, but I feel Monster's Inc is of more quality.

My vote would go to Shrek. Both were very well done, but I feel Shrek just has that certain something to push it over the edge.

If the Oscar for Best Animated Film is judged the way it should be judged then JinRoh: The Wolf Brigade should win. The writing, the dialogue, the animation, everything about the film screams Oscar, but it's a foreign film so I'm not sure what sort of chance it has. The film that probably has the best chance of winning would probably be Shrek given that it has a wider appeal than Monster's Inc.

I wouldn't count the anime submissions out of the race. I haven't seen any of them, but I think that they could be important condenders. I think that the race will mostly be between Monsters and Shrek, though, with Shrek probably winning.

Shrek. Just seen it last week, and it's really the best film I've seen in quite a while. Besides, adults are running the show here, and Shrek's the adult favorite. :D

I really liked both films, but Monsters Inc. I liked just a little bit more. However though, I feel the Oscar will probably go to Shrek hands down. No doubt about it.
BTW, Twilight, I love your avatar! :)

Hmm. I Thought Final Fantasy was cool. Could it be in the running, too?

It could very well be...actually it's almost certain!

You know, runamuck, it may get mine to...if we could vote. :)
I think that movie had the best animation, better than MONSTERS INC. or SHREK. It was more fluid and just looked spectuclar. I thought SQUARE PICTURES (now defunct) did an overall much better job.

More than likely Final Fantasy will win a technical award for something like Best Special Effects or whatnot.
Shrek would and should win Best Animated Film, because Monsters Inc. was a soulless production created by a company that desperately wanted to get out of its contract as fast as it could.

Don't like PIXAR? Is PIXAR still in cohoots with Disney?
I heard MONSTERS. INC was really good...

Pixar is contracted to make so many films for Di$ney (5 films, I think) after which the contract ends. Pixar has a reputation built up and wants to work for people other than Disney, and I guess Matt's P.O.V. is that this was cranked out to get them closer to working on their own. I remember that Disney and Pixar had to argue with each other about whether the originally-planned-as-DTV Toy Story 2 counted as part of their contract.
I haven't seen Monsters, Inc. yet so I can't really comment. I was gonna see it over Thanksgiving weekend but I was addicted to both my Phantom Menace game and sleep.

I never saw Monsters INC., I wasn't really interested. So I'm going to have to say Shrek, because I did see that one.

i liked monsters inc way better than shrek. the story was better and the visuals were MUCH better. actually, i liked shrek but not all that much, one of these days i'm going to post my full thoughts on shrek, because i truely dont think it was the "animated film that appeals to adults" like everyone keeps saying, but i'll save that discussion for another date.
but personally, i think either "waking life" or "atlantis" should win. they were both excellent. i really loved atlantis, it was really good, in both story and animation. i dont know why it did so poorly, it was a great movie, it really was, much much much much much much much much much much much much better than shrek. hehehe, one of these days i will post on shrek and it wont be pretty (even though i did like it, sort of, im mixed on it)!!! Muhaahhahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!

You are correct in that Disney has a 5 film contract with Pixar. Toy Story, A Bug's Life, and Monsters Inc so far. Disney would not let Pixar have TS2 as part of it's contract deal cause the contract didn't say sequels, but I believe 5 original films, stories, whatever. Pixar's next film will be called Finding Nemo and will be out summer 2003. It's an under the ocean story about a fish named Nemo searching for his son or father, can't remember which is which though. :) As for their 5th film, your guess is as good as mine as to what they have planned, but I'm sure they already have it planning now. It's only a matter of time before we find out what it is.
Didn't Brad Bird (Iron Giant) have a film in the works about a super hero family? I know he does but I didn't know if it was for Disney, Pixar or another studio.

Has Pixar expressed interest as to where they set up shop next? I know PDI is hooked up with Dreamworks. So...Pixar will basically be able to go anywhere they want, or stay at Disney?

Wanna hear something juicy?
STEVE PURCELL is now working with Pixar on something.
But on what? I doubt it's Nemo.
...hmmmmmmm...

I saw Monsters Inc last week and I finally saw Shrek today. I thought both were very good, but if I had a vote I think it would go towards Shrek.

Yup, Brad Bird is indeed doing something for Pixar... it's about a family of superheroes called "The Invincibles," if I'm remembering it right.

Anything Brad Bird does will rock. THE IRON GIANT remains one of the ebst animated films ever, so I can expect great htings from his next project.

Oooooooh yeah. Pixar is a superb studio, and Brad Bird is incapable of making anything less than darn good. The two of them working together? The mind boggles...

I miss Brad Bird on the Simpsons, but that's a whole new can or worms...
I really hope Bird plays an intergal part in the upcoming special edition IRON GIANT DVD, which is on my list for sure. Sure, it'll have a snapper case, but still...I can't wait for it.
Oh...um...Shrek will win I think. (bad attempt to get back on topic. :))

Sigh. I'm sure it will go to "Shrek," but I would prefer it went to "Monsters, Inc." or to something else.

I thought Monster's Inc. was a smidgen more innovative, myself.
