View Full Version : Wolverine- How is he everywhere?!

There's no secret that Wolverine is one of those characters Marvel likes to pimp. He's been on something like 80% of all Wizard covers, and every week some Marvel comic comes out with him on the cover... even if it's not his title (a few recent and upcoming ones are New Invaders, Mystique, Marvel Knights Spider-Man... I swear, he's gonna be in a random DC comic one day).

There's even in-continuity jokes, like the recent issue of Uncanny X (I think it was Uncanny) that ONLY had Wolverine on the cover, but he was in there for seven pages, and a character jokes about "Where's Wolverine?", with a "Oh, he had to go across the country for some mission".

Even Cyclops jokes in Wizard about him "spreading himself a little thin". He's in the center of the Official Handbook of Age of Apocalypse, he's (rumored to be) a central character in House of M, he's joining the New Avengers, along with being part of multiple factions of the X-Men...

Now, don't take this as me HATING Wolverine. I'm watching the X-Men cartoon, and he's had some good lines. Likewise, I think he's gonna be good in New Avengers when he finally shows up. Astonishing has written him well.

But... if EVERYONE knows he's everywhere, and EVERYONE complains about himself spreading too thin, then just why does he continue to show up everywhere? I've never seen ANYONE come into the comic shop and by a comic just because Wolverine was on it; potentially due to his "Enemy of the State" tie-ins, but even that is a rare thing.

He sells. Slap Wolverine on a comic cover, more people buy it.

He sells because he is the most popular X-Man. And the X-Men in turn have about a bajillion titles. They have all those titles, because people buy thier books.

Simple. It's all about the money. Same with Spider-Man and Batman and Superman. They're the cash cows.

But that's the thing; I've never really seen anybody pick up a comic because Wolverine was on it, and nobody ever talks about Wolverine except how "epic" he is (you can't kill him, he could take out Superman, the whole The End debacle), outside of the good lines Whedon gives him.

at least some marvel writers make fun of it now.

there was a time where Wolverine, Thanos, and Spidey could manage to appear, at least in a cameo, in every single marvel book in a month. i kid you not.

To steal the line that was used over and over and over in the 90's.

Because he's the best at what he does and what he does ain't pretty...

Because he's the best at what he does

I was so waiting to say that! Thanks a lot! Anyways I can see as how Logan is popular, but he is stretched too thin. It looks like he is being eased upon a tad though. Still there are other heroes, give Wolvie and them a break for goodness sake!

I'm actually a fan of the Wolverine character and I do think he's been stretched a bit too thin lately, but no more than the multiple Spider-Man, Batman, and Superman appeances across the board. He may appear in alot of titles but no more than those others characters. If he was written better than it wouldn't be such a bad thing but he's been so inconsistent lately it's easy to get sick of him. His own book is probaby the best Wolverine we're getting.

Wolvie has become nothing more but a char poorlyl used for cheap action plots. it`s casue wolvie isa interresting char but now that seem to be fading away.

According to Paul Jenkins' Origin miniseries, Wolverine was born sometime in the late 19th century. Though the exact year isn't named, The Unofficial Wolverine Chronology (http://www.geocities.com/ratmmjess/byrd.html) seems to believe it was around 1892. That would make Wolverine anywhere from 110-125 years old right now.

There was even a possiblity he was involved in the Civil War in the 1800s but that's likely a function of his memory implants from his time at Weapon X. Then again it has recently shown that Weapon X may have lied about the memory implants but leads to a whole other ball of convoluted yarn.
