Now, I realise this isn't really a technical forum. But when it comes to sorting issues like this I prefer to go to people I trust- people like the majority of you guys ;)
I received my computer as a Christmas present in 1998 (it's running Windows 98). As long as I've had it it's had two USB ports built into the back. However, they don't seem to work. I first found this out when I tried to get broadband internet. The modem was supposed to connect to my computer by USB and then restart the system. However, what happened was that my computer froze on loading the desktop and didn't seem to be sensing the USB connection. I tried this several times and got the same result everytime. At later dates I've tried using the ports with 2 different digital cameras and it doesn't seem to acknowledge them either.

So what's the deal? Is something wrong with my computer or is there some proccess I need to go through to activate them? Many many many MANY thanks to anyone who can help me!

Maybe you have them in wrong. I'm not sure. You know, the same thing happened to my computer...

USBs do not work on Win98 unless you install the software beforehand from a CD.

Do you mean software specific to the item (digital camera, scanner, etc) I'd be trying to use or software that activates the USB drives? If the latter, where would I find the CD-ROM with this software? I'm assuming it should be amongst the various discs I first received with my computer.

When I bought my USB it included a CD-ROM with the software needed for Win98 to recognize the USB. Win2000 and XP do not have this problem since it's automatically included as part of the system.

Is there anywhere I could download what's needed? I'm not promoting piracy, but it sounds stupid to expect people to pay to be able to use a part of their computer.

Thanks for letting me know, it's a big help :)
