TMNT Mutant Melee
More turtles of the ninja variety.
January 27, 2005 - Konami just dropped a big fat cowabunga on us all. Listen up all you extreme dudes and radical nards, the pizza devouring green machines are back for more brutal reptilian goofiness. This time the turtles are being thrust into a more Power Stone-ish like multiplayer brawl, though from the videos we've seen it's still apparent that the classic beat 'em up gameplay of the originals will be retained.
Currently, TMNT: Mutant Melee is set to feature:
Over 20 playable characters.
Adventure mode and four-player melee.
Mini-games including King of the Hill, Last Man Standing, Knock Out, and more.
Tokens for additional content purchasing.
Current press materials estimate that TMNT: Mutant Melee will offer, "...hours of bashing, crashing and trashing fun." Skeptics are currently wondering what the ratio of crashing to bashing to trashing will be. As all avid gamers (http://cube.ign.com/articles/583/583254p1.html#) know, leaning too heavily on any one of those categories could be disastrous. Other than that, we know surprisingly little about the new Mutant Melee. As far as can be told, the game will feature the classic gameplay of turtles titles from our past, but will also offer a new take on Power Stone's frantic four-player action, which was sort of an arena-like fight. Either that or it's going to be Smash Bros (http://cube.ign.com/articles/583/583254p1.html#). with shells.
coming to all systems in march.

coming to all systems in march. According to Gamespot, it's only coming to PC, X-Box, and Gamecube. Too bad... it sounds like it could be kind of cool. =/

Holy Shizpro! They jacked my idea. And I'm stoked that they did. I can't freak'n wait! Maybe you'll be able to unlock Turtles in Time (arcade version) or up to all three of the old TMNT tournament fighters games.
But something bothers me about these screen shots... Just from looking at those I get the feeling that much like the current new console games, this games controls will be a pain (and that shouldn't be the case in a multiplayer brawler). None the less... I'm surely going to pick this one up on day one.
But anyone else think it's silly to be able to choose a Foot Ninja... a reguarly one I mean.

Does anyone find it weird that it's Koonami and the system it's *not* going to is the PS2? :p
Hope the game is good. I haven't played a TNMT game since I had my NES...

My guess is the PS2 versions of the previous TMNT games didn't sell as well as the Xbox and Gamecube ones did. Though one could wonder why PC is getting this one... Perhaps the PC versions sold well as well.
Well I watched the gameplay video and I void my previous statement. The controls look to be quite fluent and that's a VERY good thing. I can't freak'n wait for March now. This is my must have game for the year thus far.

It's going to go up against Tekken 5 that's why it isn't being released on PS2...

Why it's not on PS2:
Only about 3 people in the world own a multitap. 2 of those people don't use them. Ever.

I know the guy who uses the multi-tap. We played Amplitude the other day.

These characters have been semi confirmed through screen shots and movies.
Leonardo
Donatello
Raphael
Michelangelo
Splinter
Casey
April
Shredder
Hun
Foot Ninja
Leatherhead
Triceraton (most likely Zog)
But with 20+ we should be seeing plenty more
Maybe some of these
Traximus
Usagi
Gen (from Usagi Yojimbo's world)
Karai
Ultimate Ninja
Drako
Baxter Stockman (some cyborg form)
Bishop
Quarry and/or other underground mutants
Hamato Yoshi
Another Triceraton
Foot Mystic
Foot Elite
Foot Shooter
Mr. Touch and Mister Go (Ice Climbers style) - that would own
Mecha Turtle
Slashuar
And can I say it would be fantastic if Konami brought back Aska from TMNT Tournament Fighters (on the SNES) for this game? They made her up so it'd be perfectly legal. That'd be a nice bonus for the bonus stach.
It's kinda funny they'd call it Mutant Melee when there's hardly any mutants in the new TMNT. The old show's cast would have far better suited this concept.
Oh man... March can't come soon enough.

RAINMAN, please leave your handle out of thread titles, thank you.
Not sure I'm really that thrilled for this game seeing as the first two were really mediocre, and usually spinoff games are worse than direct sequels. But at least we won't have to wait that long to find out.
I think Usagi's a shoe-in, as well as Karai, the Ultimate Ninja, and Foot Elite. I'd like to play as Mortu or any Utrom in an exo-suit, if possible.

I really want to see how they pull off April in a fighting game.
Being the oldschool TMNT fan that I am, where's Bebop and Rocksteady? :D (if I get their names wrong, I apologize. I haven't seen the tv show in ages).

Bebop and Rocksteady are characters that will not be brought back. They're rather pathetic fighters anyway...
Aska was a female fighter from the SNES version of Turtles Tournament Fighters. She was made up by Konami I believe and had no previous TMNT series history unlike most of the TMNT: TF fighters. She was a really good fighter actually. She used wind attacks and also used her butt to ram things. In the Japanese version she wore a thong but in the US release she had shorts.
Silver Sentry would have to get a look-in. Plus Stockman in his mech-suit versus Raph/whoever in that mech-suit he got into during Return to New York Part 2 I think.

Didn`t the SNES and the Gen had different roster of char in the games?

Yes. The only characters that were in all 3 versions (there was one on the NES as well - which I have BTW) were the four turtles. Casey was on the NES and Genesis version and Shredder was on the NES and SNES version but neither were on all 3. The NES game was suprisingly lots of fun and a decent fighter overall (for having only two buttons to use for attacks). Makes me wish they had made a Gameboy version or better yet a Game Gear version (as there never was a TMNT game for Game Gear).

So which one did you think had the best roster?
Andrew T. Hingson
02-01-2005, 11:24 PM
Hard to say... They were all pretty mediocre in that respect. The SNES one is probably my favorite but it had a few lame characters like Wing Nut. But Aska is SNES exclusive and she was fun. Karai and Rat King are also on the SNES one. I can't actually beat the Genesis game so I couldn't tell you about the final bosses but the basic roster is pretty good. The turtles, Casey, April, Ray Fillet (the SNES one had Armagedon the shark instead), and some Spider character. The SNES one had a lot more characters for one thing... The NES had a pitiful selection all things considered. 8 I believe. Turtles, Shredder, Casey and Hothead the Dragon but what would you expect from an NES fighter?
Yeah probably the SNES one just because it had the most variety. But if you want down and dirty turtle action with some of the main characters then you'll want the Genesis one. But they're both dirt cheap so why even choose. Use both. And if Konami wants to bring back any characters (which they wouldn't except for original characters like Aska and even that's very unlikely) then use all the characters rather than limit yourself.
But anyway...
Here's a little something from the official TMNT website. The bad news is Konami wont be releasing Mutant Melee on the PS2 due to Sony not wanting too many Konami titles. The good news is PS2 will get TMNT III and it's been confirmed for October this year (I see a pattern and given my birthday is in October... I couldn't be happier).
Unfortunately the news from 4Kids Entertainment is in regarding Konami's new release, "Mutant Melee", and it's not good for PS2 owners. Apparently Sony has much stricter policies regarding the number of titles that they'll approve in a single year, so the Turtles' fighting game will not be available for the PS2. Konami has decided to focus on TMNT 3 (coming in October) for the PS2. We're very sorry, folks - it's as bewildering to us as it is to you, but such are the ways of big business sometimes.

Maybe they're starting to worry about quality control.
The last two TMNT games sucked.
What exactly is Sony doing (wrong?), Matt or someone help me out here.

I'm sure there are deeper reasons. Again, I have to point out, it's all about marketting and the products you want tied to your name, how much that 3rd party licensing brings you, relations with that company, how you want your market to compare to competitors. It's nothing to do with being "lame" or "arrogant" in the same way that Nintendo's approach to keep a close eye on their third party releases is "lame or arrogant".
Marketing strategy, business relations and economics my friend. You can't bottom line issues of money to arrogance or lameness.

PS2 has been a hindrance to the advancement of 4 player gaming...thats why I'm glad its not on it almost. Anyways, MAYBE, JUST MAYBE, this game will play like the old ones, kick ASS, and not suck it like the other 2 recent incarnations.

What about konami? What if they don`t see that way? The ps2 has the largest fanbase of the 3 systems which could have made the sales better and encorage them to make more sequels. Now thnaks to sony so called business called, chances of that happeing is very slim.
